Is It Important to Draw Distinctions in Pop Country?

December 28th, 2009

We love to paint pop country with a broad brush around here, which may not always be fair. Think about it: sure we might consider two artists like Taylor Swift and Brad Paisley pop country, but the degree of how much pop compared to country they are, or even their overall talent level can be [...]

Album Review- Ray Wylie Hubbard- Enlightenment

December 21st, 2009

Ray Wylie Hubbard’s new album is a crooked tree with the carcass of a tire swing hanging from it. It is an oil painting laying face down in the dust of an old abandoned wood house. It is a muddy river . . . of blood. It is the skeleton springs of a mattress stuck [...]

REAL Country’s Ace in the Hole: YOU

December 20th, 2009

Yeah, Nashville and pop country might have all the attention. They might have all the money. They may have found a way to hijack all of the institutions of country music, even the word “country” itself. They may have the media in their back pocket and control of the radio stations. They may have mansions [...]

On Wednesday (12-16) Hank III began a run of Wednesday night shows at one of the last honky tonks left on Broadway in Nashville, Layla’s Bluegrass Inn. CD Roundup - The Shivering Denizens

December 14th, 2009

I get lots of CD’s sent to me to review, and unfortunately I can’t review them all. And of course, a few are not worth reviewing, and I only write bad reviews in extreme cases. So I’m going to start going through my stack of CD’s regularly and at least mentioning the ones I think [...]

Hank III Jams w/ Football’s Kyle Turley

December 13th, 2009

Well it’s Sunday, and I know a lot of you spend your Sunday’s with a brat in one hand and a foam finger over the other, eyes affixed to the boob tube. But here’s a cool story I was just alerted to on the Saving Country Music Message Board, where two of your passions collide [...]

Top 5 Country Songs of 2009

December 8th, 2009

It seems like whenever I start making “Best Of” lists, I draw the ire of one group of people or another. I think I am misunderstood quite commonly that my “Top” picks mean that they are my favorite personally, or that maybe I am even trying to push some agenda.

I really do agonize over this [...]

Album of the Year - Midnight at the Movies

December 7th, 2009

There is nothing I take more serious then putting my name behind an album as being the best of any calendar year. Unlike some organizations who hand out such things to whoever can sell the most albums or show the most teen spirit, I understand that Albums of the Year set a precedent, and will [...]

Last Rites of Ransom Pride Movie

December 5th, 2009

Film was a huge element to the original Outlaw Country movement, with people like Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson becoming outright leading men stars in films like Barbarossa and Songwriter. But in the last couple of decades the film cameras, and guns, have been silent. Until now. . .
