If you want to appreciate just how far independent Texas country artist Aaron Watson has come with his career, take a moment to reflect that in 2017, he was asked to play the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo—the same big stage that Willie Nelson, and even big pop country names like Rascal Flatts and Dierks Bentley played this year. Aaron Watson is no longer the Little Engine That Could, he’s a Texas country locomotive rolling with the big boys, and it helps that Watson has made the rodeo circuit his bread and butter over the years.

In a couple of weeks, Watson will also open the musical entertainment at the biggest rodeo in Texas—the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on the same stage Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line will play, but on Saturday night (2-25)—the day after releasing his latest album Vaquero—it was all about Aaron taking the vaunted San Antonio Rodeo stage in the center of a packed arena to play to a crowd who could appreciate the cross-culture connection he makes on his latest album.
