Brawl Erupts in Parking Lot After Sam Hunt Concert in Illinois
“Country shows man. Everybody gets way too drunk.”
This is one of many things that can be overheard in the disturbing video of a brawl that erupted after the Sam Hunt show in Tinley Park, IL (Chicago area) Saturday night, July 8th. As attendees were attempting to exit the crowded parking lot of the sold out show at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre, two separate groups of concertgoers got in a verbal argument about which car should be first in line. After exchanging verbal threats and insults, multiple individuals exited the vehicles, with one man saying, “Dude, it’s a parking lot. Where you gonna go?” and pushing another man.
This resulted in a protracted brawl with multiple parties involved, and at one point multiple physical altercations occurring at the same time, with the man who initiated the first altercation eventually laying on the pavement with a bloody face. Two security staff arrived on the scene a minute after the brawl ensues, but were unable to control it. At one point one of the security staff was shoved up against a vehicle, and sinks to the ground, injured. Accusations also flew that one of the male individuals involved tried to hit one of the women involved in the altercation, while another individual is heard is heard taunting the opposing driver by calling him a “bitch ass ni**er.”
After multiple attempts to separate the brawling individuals failed, five more security staff arrived to help diffuse the situation. Tinley Park Police Chief Steve Neubauer told the Tinley Park Patch Monday (7-10) that none of the parties wished to pursue complaints. No arrests were made in the brawl.
Stories and videos of similar altercations were common at major country music events in the summer of 2014 at the height of the Bro-Country era, escalating into a national story about the behavior at country music concerts.
The amphitheater at Tinley Park has been a common site for such altercations. At a 2014 Jason Aldean concert at the venue, multiple arrests were made, especially in the parking lot, including a man who allegedly grabbed his girlfriend by the hair and rammed her head into the steering wheel multiple times, resulting in facial injuries. Witnesses say the woman was in the passenger seat when she got into a verbal argument with concert goers in another car. When the male she was with who was driving exited the vehicle to confront the other vehicle, the woman told him to get back into the car as she got into the driver’s seat. The man reacted angrily, bashing the woman’s head into the steering wheel. The man was taken into custody for domestic battery. Multiple hit and runs were also reported at the 2014 Jason Aldean concert as attendees exited the parking lot.

Saw Cody Jinks in Richmond on Saturday night — fabulous show! However, he had to stop twice (between songs) to settle some altercation that was going on at the standing only floor level. Couldn’t see what happened from my seat, but he kept his cool and control of the crowd. By far one of the best shows I’ve seen in some time.

Where did you see Jinks?
I saw Jinks two weeks ago and didn’t see one fight. However, at the Old Crow Medicine show at the same venue the month prior it was a Rumble Royal. Secor stated, “man, the Iron City is pouring freely tonight” (a reference to a local beer).
I always think it’s the mix. OCMS got a small infusion of mainstream fans with Wagon Wheel and this was a Bob Dylan cover show so maybe there were a few Dylan fans checking it out and us hardcore hillbillies. Don’t mix well after drugs and alcohol.
And that’s what Sam Hunt draws the mainstream country and the pop fans and the trailer trash. They start partying then look at each other crooked.
No fights here for Jinks probably because it was small group of fans. Go toward Texas and he might be drawing more from the mainstream.

Yes! It was an awesome show. I was a little worried at first because he came out so mellow – busting out birds and saying he hadn’t played it in two years – but he really brought it the the second half. I say despite him not playing two of my favs – dirt and heavy load. And usually I hate sacrificing original material for covers, but I fucking loved him covering Clint Black’s Nothing’s News.

I saw Jinks a few months ago, and there were several “small rumbles” that were thankfully squashed. I have heard reports that there have been fights at other of his shows. I wouldn’t really care (I mean, it is a concert, and there is drinking), but some people take their young kids to these shows (I leave my young’ins at Nana’s on concert nights). Whenever alcohol is being served and there are people around, the potential for a fight is around. Chuck E. Cheese’s serves alcohol, and the average Chuck E. Cheese’s location has the cops come 2-3 times a month to break up brawls.
I took my stepdaughter to a Brantley Gilbert show (her choice, not mine) at a dry venue, and there were a lot of people “pre-gaming” before the show, so not serving alcohol at the venue doesn’t even solve that problem.

Fighting obviously sucks, but there’s a part of me that LOVED seeing the tall, dad-bod dude get worked. He was being a chief from the get-go — taunting, escalating the shoving, taking cheap shots — and absolutely deserved the beating of a lifetime.
Then he had the audacity to sucker punch the guy who laid him out? What a total loser.

I don’t report on every fight that has ever occurred at a country music concert, but I most certainly have reported on fights and drunken behavior from individuals and events that are covered positively here.
For example:
Justin Townes Earle getting drunk and tearing up a green room/hitting promoter’s daughter:
https://www.savingcountrymusic.com/belligerent-justin-townes-earle-arrested-in-indianapolis/
Stabbing at Moonrunner’s Fest:
https://www.savingcountrymusic.com/security-guard-stabbed-at-moonrunners-festival-in-chicago/
Evan Felker of the Turnpike Troubadours drunk on stage and blowing shows:
https://www.savingcountrymusic.com/fans-speak-up-after-numerous-drunken-performances-by-turnpike-troubadours-evan-felker/
If two people chuck knuckles in a crowd, it’s probably not a story. But if it is a big brawl such as this that was already making national headlines and I’m in a position to report on it, I will, no matter who the subject is. If a big brawl ensues at Tumbleweed or Muddy Roots or Pickathon, I probably will cover it if I’m in a capacity to, and if I feel it is in the public interest.

I thought the humorous nature of this shit show of a “fight” was worth posting. I would not have seen it otherwise. Icing on the cake was that it was at a damn Sam Hunt show. Everyone knows fights happen all the time at all kinds of events….concerts, sports games, etc. This was a particularly pathetic one that happened to be captured by a “front row” camera angle. Let Trigg have a little fun sometimes. I know I sure got a kick out of watching it. Never heard of a brawl at a Taylor Swift show. But yeah a lost country arena showd do draw nitwits not just Sam Hunt. But it does say a lot about an artist if your fanbase is regularly ignorant asshats.

Minivans are great vehicles. Practical. Nice for taking on vacation, hauling stuff home from the store, tooling kids and their equipment around to their various activities. I used to have one and wish I still did because they’re so damn handy.
But they’re not cool. They’re not manly. When a guy goes out for the evening in the minivan he leaves his cloak of masculinity at home. When someone gets belligerent with you while you’re out in the minivan, you don’t exchange expletives with him out the window, much less get out and challenge him; rather, you roll up the windows, lock the doors, and grasp the steering wheel in the grip of death with your hands placed firmly at 10 and 2. I found it funny because I was so surprised that the guy had enough testosterone with him to do it.
And as far as the black socks with tennis shoes goes, that’s a total Old Man thing, right up there with hiking the elastic waistband of your pants up above your belly button or wearing socks of any color with sandals. I’m just surprised that he didn’t have the socks pulled up to his knees. They probably started out that way but dropped to his ankles while he was moshing at the concert.
Bottom line, from my perspective these guys looked like Tom Anderson and Stewart’s dad from Beavis and Butthead getting into it.

Tom
July 11, 2017 @ 2:08 pm
I’d like to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and assume that he sat in the van listening to his Blaze Foley CD while his wife and her friends were at the concert, and that his fuse was a little short because he was going to have to listen to the girls singing all their favorite Sam Hunt tunes on the way home. And maybe he was in a hurry to get out of their because he ran all the gas out of the tank sitting there with the air on.
But I can’t.

Man, I used to say that. I have a Ford super duty and a jeep and I love them. But when my wife and I were going to have our third kid, she wanted a van so I bought an AWD Toyota Sienna. I was skeptical at first but now I love that thing. Unless there is a compelling reason to take one of the others, when I am going to run into town, I usually take the van, even if I am going by myself. Who cares what other people think? They are comfortable and handle great!
Jtrpdx

July 11, 2017 @ 7:11 pm
Not that anyone cares, since it is so off topic, but I think if you could give the van more clearance underneath and a real 4 wheel drive, it would be the ultimate roadtrip vehicle. Haul a bunch of people and gear or put the back seat down and throw a mattress in there. It is great. Seriously though, for hauling three kids around with the kind of winters we deal with, it is tough to beat. No chains, no snow tires in this kind of weather:

In my misspent youth, I got into it with a guy in traffic. He was in the passenger seat and was drunk. Every time we stopped next to him, he kept throwing pennies and nickels at our car. I told him twice to stop it. The third time I got out of the car and punched him out through the passenger window. I felt pretty good about it, but what I hadn’t noticed was the driver. He got out of the car and was 6’5″ and looked like Stone Cold Steve Austin. He hit me with a right that lifted me off my feet. I’m still wearing the scar on my chin from his ring. Oh well. You mess with the bull, you get the horns.

I saw American Aquarium, Old 97’s, and Turnpike Troubadours in KC 2 years ago (about lost my shit when I saw that was a real lineup!) and saw exactly zero fights. And it’s not cause the crowd wasn’t rowdy, it’s cause the crowd wasn’t a bunch of douche bags.
Between that lineup and the venue selling out of all but the 1 worst type of beer before Turnpike even came on stage, it was a heavily intoxicated, rowdy ass audience. And precisely zero fights as far as I could tell.

I disagree somewhat, but do get your point. It’s basically any large concert that brings out the amateurs who are casual fans of crap they hear on the radio and go to concerts for the party atmosphere over the music. My experience is that concerts featuring respectable artists tend to attract a bit more civilized crowd.

As my wife was getting ready this morning for work she says…
“‘you know that Sam Hunt song Body like a Back Road, well they made it into a pop song” I really like that song!”
! Couldn’t help myself…
“How did that happen because I thought I was already a pop song”
I think I have figured it all out now though. County radio is nothing more than the minors. With every song that’s released the ultimate goal is to make the song so vanilla that it will not only make money in county but will also make it on pop radio. Sam was never meant for country radio only. His music was always meant to use country as a stepping stone. And he is here to stay, unfortunately. Becuase financially it makes sense to not only make money from country but pop as well.
An old college roommate and I make a trip to Greenville NC for a college football game each year. He was never a country fan in college and would always kid me for being one. On our road trip last year he starting talking about how he was really getting into country music. He talked about Little Big Town, Sam Hunt and others that in my opinion her not even close to country. It was a difficult conversation as I explained to him that I didn’t listen to “his” country. I played him a little Jinks and then some Troubadours but he didn’t like either one. I still don’t how to explain to someone that I love country music and that I’m not a Luke Bryan fan.
We have a local place in town called the Brewhouse. They bring in a different artist from time to time. The Steel Woods put on a heck of a show the other week. A few months back Wade Bowen came to town. I’m guessing the place was not even a quarter full. But when Old Dominion comes to town people are begging for tickets. It’s hard to wrap my head around why someone would settle them over a talent like Wade.
Ending a positive note, I get to Jason Eady for my first time Wednesday night in Atlanta. Have always wanted to hear Cry Pretty live. Asked Courtney on Twitter if she would take the stage. Said she tried but the venue said no but she would be in the audience. Hoping Jason brings her onstage for a few songs though.

When you say you like country people automatically assume you mean radio country. It’s very frustrating. Around here, there’s one halfway decent country station but even then they pretty much only play 90’s and early 2000’s country. Which is better than current country, but still not what I’m looking for.

It has long been my personal opinion that less blame should be put upon the Artist/band that is performing and more credit for the debauchery on the venue itself… Sure,Some artists encourage drinking as a cool thing to do,,but Drinking & Country Music, any music in general, have always glorified drinking, that’s nothing new. BUT When a Venue charges you $12.00 for 1 cup of beer what does anybody expect to happen ? Folks are gonna drink like fish in the parking lot so they only need to pay for maybe 1 beer inside,if that.. Venues,Law Enforcement,Town/City Officials like to place the blame on the artists & the Fans,, BUT when do they take their share of the credit for the situation ?? I don’t drink anymore, but when I did,I did the same dang thing,,nothing to do with the sway of the performer over me,I just refused to be extorted by the venue,,especially after paying the jacked up prices just to get inside the venue.. Seriously.. VENUES are the bane of the Live music experience….

This is what happens when we define maleness by physicality. Doesn’t matter if it’s rap or country, outlaw or bro. Look at how many posts in the Alan Jackson thread were but he could deck a guy, cause he was cool. Throwing punches, being able to deck a guy doesn’t make you more manly or cool, just means you committed assault.

Who said it was a problem to be physically strong? If that’s what makes you happy, go for it! It doesn’t however make you more masculine.

Nit picking cause I’m bored. And it’s the internet. When you said “assault” it should’ve been “battery.” Assault in general is the threat of violence, where as battery is the actual violence. Hence the term “assault and battery”, indicating that both have occurred.

I was actually at that Jason Aldean concert in 2014. Left early before Aldean even came on because there was a fight right in front of us in the lawn. “Security” came to escort him out. I put quotes around security because one of them was a tiny girl, probably about 19-20 years old. He ended up punching her and was eventually arrested. This venue is a sh*tshow and if you don’t leave before the encore, you will be stuck in the parking lot for two hours trying to get out. Cars from all different directions trying to merge into the one or two lanes out of the lot. I’m surprised this doesn’t happen at every single concert at this place.

Ha! I went on a little guided rafting trip a couple weeks ago with my wife and some of her coworkers in Canon City, CO. Some of her coworkers are gay and showed up with coolers of Princess Yum Yums (local Denver raspberry flavored beer). I never heard of those before but they almost got us kicked off the trip when they carried their Princess Yum Yums into the gear hut since you’re not supposed to drink prior to the trip. That being said, the staff let them pour it out and we had a great time. I was telling that story to some of my coworkers and they mentioned that Zimas were also making a come back.

I have attended three shows over the past two years at this venue Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre Tinley Park. The venue is massive, holding approximately 28,000 people.
The staff is nice but, in general, young and inadequately trained, which creates a sense of chaos and dissatisfaction, which sets a tone for problems.
Plus, many people drink, some heavily, both before the show and during the show.
The artists often have their drinking songs, but there will be the same amount of drinking with or without these drinking songs … because a good number of people are quite young and are there to party!
Then, it can take a VERY long time to get out of the parking lot, with cars, buses, limos, and trucks jockeying for position, which is another source of chaos and conflict.
The safest strategy is to exit before the show ends, though that ruins the full experience, and almost no one leaves early.

With all the recent SCM stories about brawls, threatened fisticuffs and verbal insults hurled between artists, it’s further proof that people are more violent during the heat of the summer months. It’s like watchin rasslin’.

I broke down and watched the video. I held off because all these concert/ sporting event fight videos are all the same. However, this one is fucking hilarious.
That security kid … wtf! He’s acting like he’s secret service jumping in there. At one point, he got pushed into the car and it looked like he was jacked up. But was back in there sacrificing his body. Give that man a raise!

Idiots. But noteworthy and worth posting for a few reasons…
1) There is full and unedited video and it’s entertaining to watch as the tall dude get’s laid on the ground about 10 seconds after getting out of his car and starting the shoving.
2) It could have been deescalated easily if one of the drivers had simply demurred in the interest of not inciting something. Nobody loses in that situation.
3) When exiting a concert, be the bigger person and there won’t be an issue. In this case, two car fulls of drunken morons met at a merge point. Drunken fighting ensued.
4) And finally, this has little to do with Sam Hunt, though I loathe him and his music. This could have been morons existing a football game or pretty much any public venue where alcohol is served.

Answer is simple. Take your time heading to the parking lot. When you get there take it easy and wait for the lot to thin out. You will most likely get home at about the same time since all you are going to be doing is sitting in stop and go traffic.

When I saw the title of the article, as an IL native, I was curious. Then I saw Tinley Park. I audibly said, “oh, that makes sense”. I’ve spent a fair amount of time there, not surprised.
I do like that no one pressed charges. Are we seeing a return of the old school bar fight? I’m not a violent man, but in this day and age, I am surprised no one filed complaints about hurt feelings.

The inevitable consequence of the alcohol crash. Everyone’s been drinking and hooting it up for hours and hours, then it’s over, the drinking stops and everyone crashes at the same time, becoming ornery, crabby, impatient and angry that the good time is all over.

A “fight” “erupted” in the streets of Athens, GA after the Dwight Yoakam (kickass) show last night. It was about three or four missed punches that probably wouldn’t have hurt if they had landed. And, as drunks are wont to do, they shook and bro-hugged afterwards.
Pretty stupid really.
