Cody Jinks to Make His National Television Debut
After you’ve spent as much time as I have down in the trenches of country music, scouring the countryside looking for artists and bands that could be the next ones to rise out of obscurity and challenge the mainstream’s monopoly on stardom, you start to get a nose for when someone is catching the slipstream towards the higher latitudes, and when the seeds of prosperity that have been sown over many years of hard work begin to sprout.
Folks like Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, and Jason Isbell were not overnight sensations. It took years of effort and these artists reaching their mid 30’s before it all came together for them. And if you put your ear to the ground, you get the sense that a similarly shaped groundswell is building beneath Cody Jinks at the moment. Benefiting from the grassroots of the Texas scene, but with a traditional country sound that’s impacting nationally right as the appetite for older country is expanding once again, Cody Jinks could be poised for big things.
The Saving Country Music Album of the Year winner will play Conan O’Brien on January 26th, and though the late night talk shows are not the same opportunity they were when Ed Sullivan was still sucking air, getting an opportunity such as this is always a good indication when an artist is beginning to make serious noise on the national scale. When you combine that with regularly sold out shows and strong album sales, you get a sense that Cody Jinks could be the next one to shock the mainstream from the independent realm.
So this isn’t just about watching one of your favorite artists on the boob tube. It’s about watching where Cody Jinks could go from here.

Luckenbach song swap w Courtney Patton and Darrell Dodd, that’s when I first knew he really had something. My friend was listening to him, I thought Jamey Johnson had new music for aminute. Thatmother trucker can write a song, man… Suffice to say I am a big fan and when he started touring with Whitney Morgan that solidified it for me. That boy has a gift, I’ll be tuning in for sure and hopefully when he gets back from the West coast we can catch a show.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve got a real treat in store for you right now. Making his national television debut tonight, would you please welcome to the program the artist who is the recipient of Saving Country Music’s Album of the Year award…. Cody Jinks!”
Yeah, probably not. 😉
Great news. I’m happy for him.

When we hosted Cody jinks at the Bear Den bar Howard Kansas in 2013 we were blown away and new that he had the ability and talent to bring country music back to the real thing, way to go brother truly blessed to have had you play for the first time in Kansas, especially in our little town and venue.

Conan isn’t on my radar, but he seems to be heading into the roots scene – next week he has the Josh Abbot band as well as the Drive By Truckers. In the latter part of last year he had Shovels & Rope, Colvin and Earle, st paul and the broken bones, and Parker Millsap

He had the Truckers I twice when Isbell was with them, once after TDS and once after ABAAC. Him and Letterman have always been roots-leaning

This is an excellent opportunity for him to reach some new fans ! I am reminded of the Opry thread down the page. I think that fine institution has really missed some opportunities in recent years. If I were them, I’d have the GQ 3 and Jinks and so forth on speed dial.

Very well deserved recognition. I have been saying for a few months now that Cody Jinks is the next Sturgill Simpson. I get the same sense of excitement that Sturgill brought when he started getting national publicity, especially within the fellow “Flockers (fan base)” community!
I’m just glad I got to see Cody last month before he blows up too this year. The dude is so down to earth, too, that he even spends an hour after the show to meet the fans and sign vinyl and what not for us nerds! He shook every persons hand and thanked them for coming to his show!
Looking forward to this journey!

I have followed and personally known him going on 5 years. From playing in my cousins small bar along Interstate 29 between KC and Omaha for years. Now he’s a nation wide tour master, putting on more miles than most. He is down to earth and takes all the time his fans need to meet, talk with and take pictures. He had blown up since the release of “Sonic Ranch” and now “I Ain’t The Devil You Think I Am”. You will see him recognized by the Country Music Association very soon. Although he has never cared about what critics thinks for years, the overdue notice has to be a big a smile maker for him now. I’ll continue to follow him from local joints to big venues until he’s retired, but that won’t be for a VERY LONG TIME!

He didn’t release the album called “Sonic Ranch”. Whitey Morgan did. And it’s not called “I ain’t the devil you think I am”…

Sorry Adobe Sessions and I Ain’t The Devil… That’s what happens when you have brain damage from MS and go off memory and not double checking yourself..
I apologize for not fact checking before submitting.

He did record the last record at the Sonic Ranch though. Almost immediately after Whitey did, easy mistake to make. Especially considering all of their numerous similarities.

Yes, exactly. Favoritems place for both to record. Have seen them both for 5 years now, spend alot of alone time with them both and seperatley. Easily confused as I’m excitedly writing about Cody that my brain gets overload and confusion happens due to brain damage from my Multiple Sclerosis .
Give a fan a break, lol. One of them people that love to point out any mistakes by others, or another fan that wanted it right, I don’t know but once again, I humbly apologize.

I learned of Sturgill Simpson from his summer 2014 appearance on Conan. Played Livin’ the Dream. I had not listened to country music in 20 years and was blown away. The search for Sturgill info/music brought me to SCM. I have seen Sturgill live 7 times since then as well as Whitey Morgan, Jamey Johnson, Merle Haggard, Marty Stuart, Dwight Yoakam, Jason Isbell, and finally Cody Jinks at Billy Bobs last August. Without Simpson’s appearance on Conan, this would not have happened.

That’s pretty crazy. Shows the power of television. I’m glad you discovered the music.

That’s a cool story. Thanks for sharing. Sturgill has been the vertex of music for me over the last 2-3 years. I listen to just about everything but I find a lot of roads pointing back to that cat. Especially live performances. More country artist should learn from Sturgill’s live performances in my opinion.
Cody and Whitey are great live too. Sturgill just on another level imo

I really like Conan – after over two decades his humor is still further out there than most of the often rather lame and tame new guys. The choice of musical acts on the show is really good. Being from Europe, I watch his stuff online, as many of his fans do. Which means a slot like this opens up opportunities for bands not only in the States nowadays.
But in the end it will be down to the artist to make use of that opportunity. Often enough I will skip the musical bit after half a minute if the artist is not convincing to me. But every now and again Conan’s show will introduce you to someone really outstanding. Even though they were on their third album at the time, I had not heard of the Punch Brothers before I saw them perform “Movement and Location” on Conan and they blew me away instantly. Really looking forward to seeing Cody Jinks on there now.

That’s awesome for Cody, I am sure he will pick up a ton of new fans. I’m excited as all heck to get the chance to see him out here in Cali. I seriously hope SCM has a similar story this time next year about Eric Strickland.

hey Trig, another promising new voice is Paul Erdman (Indiana). there’s also really good writer in Nashville named Josh Wolfe who is about to release his first EP. his singles out there already are competent go’s at commercial work, but I heard an excellent unreleased thing six months ago.
good to see Sturgill and Cody blazing paths and clearing underbrush

Jinks has some of the absolute best music out right now. I like how dark some of it feels. That heavy metal influence shows up in the coolest of ways. Not in the actual music, but in the vibe of the songs. Cody Jinks is something special in country music and I’m very happy he is getting his due. Salute from Kansas City!
