Colter Wall to Release Self-Titled Debut Album
Colter Wall will release his self-titled debut album via Thirty Tigers on May 12th. Produced by Dave Cobb and featuring Cobb and other noted artists such as Robby Turner, the new album looks to put the Saskatchewan, Canada native in the spotlight in North America and beyond after first making waves with his 2015 EP, Imaginary Appalachia.
Like a crusty old bard who pulls his pack mule up to the front of a frontier saloon, or a trapper who parks a sleigh packed with pelts and trinkets to trade in front of a warm inn, walking in the door to earn a meal and respite by sewing tales and entertaining locals for the coins they throw, Colter Wall bends to the task of timeless storytelling, squinting his eyes as he sings like the exit of the stories is so heartfelt it’s painful, and hopes enough will listen to justify the effort. His music is much older than his age, and whether it’s a tender love story, or a torrid murder tale, each story is delivered with care.
The most remarkable takeaway from Colter Wall is his deep, billowy voice, marking the centerpiece of his music. His song “Sleeping on the Blacktop” was recently featured in the Oscar-nominated 2016 film Hell or High Water. Incidentally, his father, Brad Wall, is the Premier of Canada’s Saskatchewan province.
Ahead of the release, Colter Wall has issued a new song called “Thirteen Silver Dollars.” The stripped down track is made available immediately if you pre-order the self-titled release on Amazon or iTunes.

My ears just had a orgasm!
This is the kind of storytelling songwriting that makes me green with jealousy.
I’m getting the EP tonight.

I missed your review of Imaginary Appalachia – it was posted on NYE.
I see he’s touring with Cody Jinks. Hopefully, he’s still the opener when Jinks rolls through town this summer.

From the two songs I’ve heard now, I’m not sure about this guy yet. Interested to hear the rest of the album. Thanks for the review.

I really liked his EP “Imaginary Appalachia” and am really looking forward to this record, but I was a little surprised they selected “Thirteen Silver Dollars” as the premier track since it’s stripped down and doesn’t really highlight the best of what his voice does. I actually like the live version a lot more and that’s why I included it here. In the context of the album it may sound great, you just never know, but I would have chosen a more dynamic track to sell him to first-time listeners.

I like his style and his voice but I suspect he’ll have more of a cult like following than a main stream effort.

The raw clip sounds great. I’m having a hard time picturing one of those 5 guitar riffs Dave Cobb knows, being played over the top of that though…

Great stuff! Seeing him open for Margo Price next month at a small venue in Columbus, OH. Looking forward to it!

Most of these songs are on YouTube right now, I was worried he’d just recycle his EP and throw on one or two new songs, glad to see this is new stuff (for him at least, there’s probably some covers).

I like how simple the songs I’ve heard from him are just a acoustic guitar and a foot pedal drum.

Loving this. Can’t wait.
Hey Trigger, have you heard The Dead South? I was just on YouTube jammin Colter Wall and clicked on them. I’m hooked. Also from Saskatchewan. Banjo, mandolin, cello, guitar, and great vocals. Good stuff. Album is called “Illusion & Doubt” from the end of last year.
“Good Canadian boys!” (Don Cherry, for anyone who hasn’t seen Hockey Night in Canada).

Tigger … as usual your word painting of this storyteller was bang on. If country music is to be saved we need more singer/songwriters like Colter Wall. I lliked his EP a lot and I love this new song – stripped down and all. The nod to Jimmy Rodgers and Blue Yodel #9 was very cool. How old is Colter again? If this is indicative of what the record is going to be like, he will make some waves in ’17.

Thanks for the introduction! He’s right next door to me, one prairie province over, and I’ve never heard of him prior to this article. Just downloaded Imaginary Appalachia and am completely hooked. His EP will be getting heavy rotation at my place and I can’t wait for his full length. I love discovering amazing new artists through this site Trigger, thanks again!

This sounds good. I’ll have to check it out. Its kind of a shame that a young guy like this is tangled up with Mary Sparr, though…

me and my wife went to see Colter Wall open for Margo price last week. he stole the show. he only played one song from Imaginary Appalachia. The rest was new stuff and it was VERY impressive. We had the pleasure of talking to him for a bit after the show and got a picture with him, too. He’s a very soft-spoken, humble and nice guy, from what i can tell. I think this guy is going to go far. Definitely an artist to watch. He is gaining lot’s of fans every day now, it seems! Stoked for this new album. Produced by Dave Cobb…i expect good things.
