Thoughts & Prayers For Randy Travis After His Father Passes Away
Thoughts and prayers are flowing to Country Music Hall of Famer Randy Travis and his family after his father, 83-year-old Harold Traywick, passed away on Saturday, October 8th, 2016 at his residence in Marshville, North Carolina.
Harold Bruce Traywick was born in Marshville, as was Randy Travis. Randy’s birth name was Randy Bruce Traywick—sharing his middle name with his father. While Randy would go on to become one of the biggest names in country music in the 80’s and beyond as a neotraditional country singer, his father never strayed from the small town lifestyle Randy Travis sang about in many of his songs.
Along with running a meat route and owning a construction company, Harold Traywick owned a turkey farm, raised cattle, and had a dedicated passion for horses, training them with the help of his sons and grandsons.
Harold Traywick was a big fan of classic country, including Hank Williams, George Jones, and Lefty Frizzell, encouraging his children to pursue their musical talents from a young age. At the age of eight, Randy Travis began playing guitar and singing at the local Church of Christ. Two years later, Randy would form a short-lived band with one of his brothers called the Traywick Brothers. It was a talent competition in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1975 that Randy Travis won when he began to pursue music professionally, eventually moving to Nashville. In 2016, Randy Travis was announced as one of the newest inductees to the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Randy Travis was the second-oldest of Harold Traywick’s six children. Traywick is also survived by nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Online condolences to Randy Travis and his family can be made at www.morganandsonfuneralhome.com.

“Harold Traywick was a big fan of classic country, including Hank Williams, George Jones, and Lefty Frizzell…”
I’d add his son to that list of classic country, maybe the last classic country singer.

Sad to hear. On a more positive note, I’m glad to see Jon Pardi and Josh Turner have payed tribute to Travis as part of the Forever Country Cover Series.

I see Randy’s issuing a colleciton of his #1’s. Lots of good songs there. I’d sure love it if he had a couple more albums in him.
