Willie Nelson & Kacey Musgraves To Record Together
It was bound to happen. Despite the 55 year age difference, Kacey Musgraves and Willie Nelson seem to be cut from the same country music cloth; kindred spirits if you will. They both are songwriters, both Texans, are performers by default that don’t seem to have much desire for showbiz, and now both have achieved critical acclaim. Kacey has been touring with Willie and Alison Krauss this summer, and it seems only natural that the close quarters might eventually breed a collaboration. It appears Willie has taken a shine to Musgraves, and Kacey’s avatar on Twitter for quite some time now has been of her planting a wet one right on Willie’s cheek. I guess there’s no generation gap when you’re both old souls … and you know, there’s that little business of their mutual appreciation for, um, aroma therapy.
Speaking of, Willie was being interviewed by the pot rag CelebStoner.com earlier this week, and let slide an interesting tidbit about what he and Musgraves have in store. “It’s really a lot of fun, we’ve had a good tour,” Willie said about traveling with Musgraves. “I look forward to touring with those folks again one day. Kacey and I are planning on doing a song together, an old song I wrote called ‘You Sure This Is Where You Want to Be.’ We’re going to do some recording together and that’s going to be cool.”
Willie seems to allude that it may be more than just one song the duo might work on together, but the one song Willie mentions, “You Sure This Is Where You Want To Be”, is known more commonly by the title “Are You Sure”, and first appeared on Willie’s third studio album, Country Willie – His Own Songs from 1965. It was a co-write with his former Cherokee Cowboys bunk mate Buddy Emmons.
“Are You Sure” comes from the same songwriting era as Willie’s standards like “Night Life”, “Crazy”, and “Hello Walls”. And despite never having received the same accolades as the others, it has that simple Willie sentiment that is hard to not get sentimental over, and a moral that is timeless.
No word on when any Willie/Kacey collabs might see the light of day, but we’ll definitely be listening for them.

I think this was bound to happen, because hell Willie has recorded with everybody I think. I think if I met him in a bar and asked him to sing with me on a song, that he would say “let’s do it”! Although I really like Kacey a lot, I don’t think of her as an old soul at all. She is a lot more new age than she let’s on. Watching her through the years from when she went off to be on Nashville Star and just playing shows around Texas, I think she is playing up that old soul, folky girl style a little bit.

Willie and Kacey are a lot closer in style than it is let on. Willie is one of her idols and she has mentioned Allison Krauss as one of her influences.
I went to the final concert of the Kacey part of the tour last week and she had quite a bit of Willie’s fan base. Also during Willie’s set I could see her standing off stage right watching him and Alison before him like she was studying them or something. She has posted a lot of pictures from there as well. He brought her out do do “roll me up and smoke me when I die” and “the circle is complete” with him with her own mic where Alison and Dan had to share one.
She is also one of the few people in mainstream country that can play a mandolin.

Who hasn’t recorded with Willie? I am feeling left out. But what a cat!!!
Story to share, years ago while autographing a Stetson for me after a show he looked up with that amazing smile and said, “That’s a nice hat. Take good care of it.” Still have that hat.
BTW – Appreciated his advice regarding vaporizing on Larry King. Spot on.

Is there going to be a second leg of the Musgraves/Krauss/Nelson tour? I just got an email notification that Willie is playing Pittsburgh mid-September.
All this would be good news for me cause I just haven’t jumped on the Musgraves’ bandwagon yet. I just haven’t found her that interesting to date. But collaborating with Willie could change my mind.

The second half of the tour they have Jason Isbell with them. Kacey is in the UK starting tonight and then she does some dates with the Zac Brown band before doing some dates with Katy Perry and some of her own. She reminds me a lot of Alison Krauss. Alison and Dan Tyminski do a lot of the same things when it comes to touring and such.
There is a good chance Willie picks her up again eventually he really likes her especially of they are going to be cutting tracks together. It looks to me like he is taking special care of her. They are the same in a lot of ways.

Was going to mention Isbell, glad you did.
They’re all at Ravinia, north suburbs of Chicago, on July 12. Been telling everyone to go see him/them.

If you love great writing and you haven’t listened to KM’s album top to bottom yet , do yourself a favour . If you’re a fan of tight , fresh , clever and intelligent songwriting and terrific hooks , look no further . Hands down my favourite release last year followed by Brandy Clarke’s ’12 Stories’ . Also check out Erin Enderlin’s ‘demo’ album ( she wrote Monday Morning Church ) and a song called YOU DON’T KNOW JACK . These records are all , in my humble opinion , songwriting clinics which should be mandatory listening for country fans and other country songwriters .

Musgraves, Krauss, and Nelson?
That is a LOT of talent and first-class music packed in one tour.

Recording something with Kacey would mean something much different if it was me.

Awesome, the first song I heard from Willie was actually this one, thanks to the TV Show Lost.

Just out of interest, “Are You Sure” was the song Willie Nelson contributed to the recent Buddy Emmons tribute album.
