Beefy Lineup Announced for Willie Nelson Makeup Show
Yeah remember a couple of weeks back when the 85-year-old Willie Nelson had the runs so bad he couldn’t perform in Charlotte, throwing his hat out into the crowd before sauntering off, and some fans felt the need to throw a hissey fit because they felt screwed out of a performance? Well we knew the whole time there would be a makeup date because that’s how these things work, and the promoters Blackbird Presents and LiveNation said as much as soon as the cancellation was announced. And sure enough, a few days later they announced a makeup day on June 20th.
Now they’ve announced additional performers for the makeup date, and all of a sudden what was supposed to be a simple makeup performance for Willie has turned into a pretty badass show all unto itself. Just announced as support performers for Willie Nelson’s Charlotte show are North Carolina’s own The Avett Brothers, country traditionalist and regular Willie Nelson tour buddy Jamey Johnson, and possibly most importantly, Sarah Shook and the Disarmers. Sarah Shook is also based in North Carolina.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but this should be the biggest audience the Shook Show will have played for up to this point. The PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte holds 19,500 asses, and the place will probably be filled due to this beefy lineup. There are still tickets available for the show starting at $35.00.
Also appreciate that original ticket holders for the event on May 26th still got treated to performances by Old Crow Medicine Show, Sturgill Simpson, and openers The Wild Feathers and Mitchell Lee before Willie bailed. In fairness, originally Brandi Carlile and Elvis Costello were also supposed to play the date, but canceled weeks before for personal reasons. Still, those original ticket holders will be able to redeem their stubs for what basically is an entirely new lineup for a show they’ve already paid for, and get their Willie Nelson rain check on top of it. If anyone is in a position to bitch at the moment, it’s people who chose another date on the Outlaw Fest circuit this year who won’t have the opportunity to double dip.
Yeah LiveNation can be a bunch of bastards, and perhaps Blackbird Presents could have communicated about this particular show better. But anyone complaining now they were shafted by Willie Nelson when he walked off that stage that night should now be thankful instead.

I think any time you go see an artist that is 85 years old you have to factor in the possibility that they might not be able to perform. My 23 year old daughter attended the Raleigh show the night before. One day she will be able to tell her grandchildren that she saw the legendary Willie Nelson perform and they will be awed. Also, hate to be picky but Sarah Shook is a native of New York. She was grown when she move down here. But she has been here for a long while and she is a great talent.

I also hate to be picky. You’re not wrong that she’s a native of New York State, but I just want to point out that she’s originally from Rochester, NY in the western part of the state, over 300 miles from NYC (I went to school near the former and grew up near the latter). In many ways, more Midwest than East Coast.

I mean to a point. Anyone who paid to travel, hotel room, etc may not be able to go back. So yes it’s an awesome second show, but for a variety of reasons, some people often can’t make a make-up date. Anyways, I think the frustration was more about how it was handled, and the lack of communication. Seeing Willie come out on stage, and then leave without saying a word, would probably frustrate many of us, as understandable as it was.

If you’re in NC you’ve hopefully heard of Lisa Dames, she has been doing Patsy Cline shows for over 20 years out of Greensboro (Just a Closer Walk with Patsy Cline).
It would be huge to get her on this lineup. Willie did a “duet” recording with Patsy recently of her hit gospel rendition of Just a Closer Walk With Thee. As y’all know he wrote Crazy that went viral in the sixties.
Somebody make it happen.

The same thing happened at the Vegas show, They have made a make up show in Oct, I have the same problem I have to make hotel reservation again and make the drive back but it is worth it too see one of the best singer song writers to date, I had the privilege of seeing the whole outlaws of country show a very long time ago in a small club in Hunington Beach California kind of a tune up for the tour, Basically it was Willie, Waylon, Kris Kristofferson and the man in black Johnny Cash I think I’m missing one I think it was a Merle Haggard the show rocked, I have been a Willie fan forever so not making the show in Oct is not a option and I hope to see thousands of people that are as excited as myself and as always keep Willie in your Prayers

Great line up, but going to Charlotte from Asheville on a Wednesday night when you have work the next day and no more money for gas, hotel and $18 drinks, it only pisses me off more that I can’t go and would have rather not had a redo. Happy for those that can make it.

I missed on the original day due to a cousin’s wedding being announced on Easter Sunday after I had already bought the tickets for the show. I gave the original two tickets to a good buddy who has been with me to a couple dozen shows or more (DBT, Rolling Stones, Jamey Johnson, Ben Harper, Avett Bros, Steve Miller Band are a few of the shows we have been to together) He had a groovy time at the original show. Free tickets (who wouldn’t have fun). I was jacked when he text me and told me they were gonna reschedule the show. Been patiently waiting to see who was going to be the special guests. I’ve never seen Willie and am super excited to get to see him next week. Avett Bros and Jamey Johnson will be two good additions IMO (was hoping for NR and the Night Sweats). Heard some good things about Sarah Shook live from the DBT board, but it will be my first time to see her live too. Sounds like it will be a great time. Excited.
