Billy Joe Shaver to be Paid Tribute on SiriusXM

It’s been a hard few weeks down in Texas and beyond as Texas music and Outlaw country have lost three titans of the golden era, with Johnny Bush, Jerry Jeff, Walker, and now Billy Joe Shaver all passing away in rapid succession. It has left the country music world reeling in an already unprecedented year.

Billy Joe Shaver died on Wednesday, October 28th after suffering a massive stroke on the morning of October 27th significantly affecting his brain stem. Billy Joe was currently in a rehabilitation facility after undergoing hip replacement surgery when the stroke occurred. They placed Shaver on life support, but he did not make it. He was 81 years old.

Throughout this upcoming Halloween weekend and into the next, SiriusXM’s Outlaw station (Channel 60) will be paying tribute to Billy Joe Shaver with rembrances and replaying multiple interviews he gave to the satellite radio provider over the years. See dates and times below, with shows by Shooter Jennings, Steve Earle, and Alamo Jones participating. There will also be remembrances all weekend on the Willie’s Roadhouse station (Channel 59). Willie and Billy Joe Shaver remained close friends well into their careers.

Without multiple fingers on his right hand, Billy Joe Shaver left an indelible mark on country music that will never be worn down. From writing all but one of the songs on the landmark, breakout album from Waylon Jennings—1973’s Honky Tonk Heroes—to beating the wrap for shooing a man in the face (in self-defense) near Waco in 2010, Billy Joe Shaver was the full embodiment of the “Outlaw” country icon and hero.

Unfortunately with the pandemic, proper in-person tributes for these fallen legends are just not possible. But hopefully these radio tributes and remembrances can tide us over until we’re able to congregate once again.
