Billy Strings Adds Additional Dates to Landmark Tour

Nearly 90 years after Bill Monroe laid out the foundation of the bluegrass discipline, the country subgenre is arguably reaching both its popular and creative apex, and it is doing so off the blazing fingers of music phenom Billy Strings. Generational in its scope, and Earth-shattering in its reach, it is arguably the greatest thing going on in live music, today or possibly even during any other era. Seeing Billy Strings live isn’t an opportunity at entertainment, it is a life-altering experience.
Billy Strings is not frugal with doling out opportunities to partake in that experience, and has graduated to arenas in many markets, and playing multiple nights in amphitheaters in others to satisfy demand. Already selling out most all of his tour dates into June—including two consecutive nights at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena later this month—Strings has just announced a slew of new dates throughout July and August.
Similar to the previous dates, these new dates are likely to sell out immediately.
Let’s not overlook what is happening here, and make sure we celebrate just what an achievement this is. Billy Strings got here not by selling out, but in many respects, doubling down on his bluegrass roots, including his latest album Me / and / Dad comprised of traditional country and bluegrass songs, recorded with his dad.
Billy’s appeal in the jam band realm has also opened up an entirely different audience to bluegrass music, and there is definitely a Grateful Dead aspect to his fandom of folks following him all around the country to see him play that has helped bolster his audience. But ultimately, this is bluegrass—an elemental building block to true country music—finding an arena-level appeal.

“And always remember, friends, there’s no room in vulgarity for bluegrass.”

I was just at the Broomfield CO shows a couple weeks ago and have Red Rocks and Mission Ballroom tix for May. At this point, I can’t miss him live if there’s any opportunity. It’s wild how much people are going crazy over the more traditional music he plays even though it’s not the crowd you see at traditional bluegrass shows/festivals. One of the nights I went by myself and kind of floated through the crowd and young women were grabbing me to dance to the more traditional fiddle music and bluegrass songs everywhere I went (too bad I can’t dance). And speaking of the fiddle music, I can’t believe how well Alex fits in with those guys. These were my first shows with him and he’s phenomenal.

He’s coming to Germany, yeah! No Munich show though, too bad. But then, traveling distances here are a lot shorter than the ones you guys in the States are used to so I guess I won’t complain and hopefully get to make it to Frankfurt.

I got tix for the two VT shows and ME.. Looks like I may end up at one of the Boston shows too. LOL.

More than excited that he’s doing two in a row in Southern California. I’m on an island out here, man! NOBODY in the country/roots scene comes out here after their first couple “play all the small bars everywhere” tours.

As I’ve posted previously, I’m a huge fan and attended something like nine shows in 2022 alone, including four in one week in Philly and DC. Every single show was just about the most exciting live music experience I’ve ever had in 45 years of attending all kinds of live music shows. If you have a chance to see him, run, don’t walk.
That said, the last time I saw him was November or December in DC, and since then, his already-bursting popularity seems to have exploded to yet another level–and it feels like a little too much effort to navigate. That’s a purely personal issue, and I don’t remotely begrudge him or any of his new or old fans any of this experience. He seems to be a remarkably good guy in every way. But the pitched battle amongst fans and bots to get tickets has escalated, as have the scene-wars between those who see themselves as guardians of some nostalgic era when he was playing in smaller venues, etc. vs. more recent converts. I can’t emphasize strongly enough the imperative to catch a show if you can, but my time with BMFS is mostly in the past.

Edit: 24 hours later, I bought tickets for a show 4 hours away.

Going to see my first two Billy shows tonight and tomorrow. I have some high hopes for a lot of reasons, but now the bar is really high!

His setlist from last night looks awesome so will definitely be checking it out on Nugs as soon as I see it posted. No matter how high you set the bar, Billy will exceed your expectations at least one of the nights. I thought the Friday show for the 3-show run in CO a couple weeks ago took a while to get going but Thursday and Saturday were great set lists all the way through.
