Blanco Brown Crash Lands National Anthem at NASCAR Race
– – – – – – – – –
Holy shit this is bad.
It’s so often embarrassing as a country music fan when some mainstream “country” (in quotations) performer gets presented on a national stage. The most recent example was Blanco Brown singing the National Anthem ahead of the NASCAR race on Sunday (3-19) at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Blanco Brown is already an embarrassment enough on his own as the store brand version of Lil Nas X. Broken Bow Records signed him during the whole “Old Town Road” kerfuffle, and released the godawful “The Git Up” as a Tik-Tok craze. Blanco was later a guest on a bad Parmalee single, and since then all he’s done is release one failed single after another, and worked with both of country music’s interloping accused rapists, sexual assaulters, and groomers: Nelly and Diplo.
Granted, about 95% of Blance Brown’s National Anthem performance was not bad at all. He did a more soulful and busy take on it than some may find favor with, but whatever. It was working for him. Then comes the last “note,” and all a sudden the performance of ol’ Blanco crashed harder than Silicon Valley Bank.
He might as well have just stopped down the performance and told us all to go fuck our mothers. I felt less insulted than Clay Walker’s tour bus driver after Clay called him the ‘c’ word and told him “drive me smooth motherfucker.” This is the ear-serration that will accompany the four horsemen of the apocalypse galloping out of the sky to usher in the total annihilation of the Earth.
Stuff like this is the reason sports commentators hate on country music all the time, and over the years they have gravitated more toward performers like Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, and the Turnpike Troubadours. And the confidence with which Blanco Brown delivered this ear-piercing banshee screech like he nailed it or something by crossing his arms at the end like he’s Mr. Cool is especially ripe. The sign language lady should have flipped him off.
Chris Stapleton at the Super Bowl, this was not.

That. Was. Terrible
March 20, 2023 @ 5:31 pm
He had the same confidence as DJ Khalid with an acoustic.
Sir Adam the Great
March 21, 2023 @ 7:23 am
I understood that reference.
March 20, 2023 @ 11:23 am
Who s even going to associate that with country music?
March 20, 2023 @ 11:47 am
People that are easily triggered
March 20, 2023 @ 11:55 am
Blanco Brown is signed to a country label and he is pushed as a country artist. He’s actually playing the Two Step Inn Fest here in Texas next month headlined by Tyler Childers and Zach Bryan.
March 20, 2023 @ 12:32 pm
I’ll be there and don’t plan to see him, Diplo or T-Pain.
Jerry Clower's Ghost
March 20, 2023 @ 3:22 pm
Why not T-Pain? That guy’s an amazing singer!
March 22, 2023 @ 6:40 am
I’ve had On Top of the Covers on repeat for a few days. No shame.
March 20, 2023 @ 1:38 pm
: D What do you want to bet that he doesn’t pull that cuteness at the Two Step Inn Fest?
Hey, when you can’t pull a disrespectful wardrobe malfunction, let’s just pull a disrespectful mic malfunction.
: D Hey Hoptown, ready for a road trip?
I’ll get the party started & you can do clean up.
Home of The Brave.
March 20, 2023 @ 5:10 pm
Where to? Remarkably, we don’t have any road concerts planned right now. Everything is coming to us so far this year. Which after the challenges last year between inflation, weather anomalies, and no snow at all this winter, he can afford to stay put. But, we should be in good shape at the end of summer/ early fall to hit the road.
March 20, 2023 @ 9:44 pm
Something in the fall sounds fun.
March 20, 2023 @ 11:40 am
That dude was definitely channeling his inner Yoko Ono.
That’s the second time in 24 hours the Alexa in my office was activated because I listened to something in dire distress embedded in a SCM article. They are going to send first responders to investigate.
March 20, 2023 @ 11:45 am
that is the funniest video i have ever seen in my life. why did he do that. how did he even make that noise. who even is blanco brown. he’s gotta be pranking us with this one. i cannot stop laughing at the little arm cross at the end my goodness

March 20, 2023 @ 3:25 pm
I hear his last album rips harder than Goodbye L.A.
March 20, 2023 @ 11:49 am
Haha, I may play this one more time when I get home, just to see my dog’s reaction to the ending. I know that will elicit some sort of hilarious reaction.
March 20, 2023 @ 11:53 am
The comments on that Twitter post are hilarious.
The credibility of the artist and actual performance don’t matter though, right? 🔲 ✅
March 20, 2023 @ 12:14 pm
ANYONE who was responsible for hiring THAT creature and promoting the creature as a “country singer” should be fired immediately and NEVER provided the opportunity to work in the music business again!
March 20, 2023 @ 2:09 pm
“Creature”? Come on, man, that’s uncalled for.
(And before you get all riled up and accuse me of being a snowflake and being triggered, let me make it perfectly clear – I think his music is hot garbage and that labeling him as a country artist is a joke and a slap in the face of real country music. But saying shit like that above is weak and off base. Do better in your criticism.)
March 20, 2023 @ 2:37 pm
Thank you for stating that you think it doesn’t even rise to the status of a creature. WOW!
Jerry Clower's Ghost
March 20, 2023 @ 3:20 pm
But dude sbach is being respectful, and with all due respect from me, why would you call him a creature? Or am I missing something? Is he trans or non-binary? Not saying i support anti-those-things, but I just don’t know much about Blanco.
March 20, 2023 @ 3:49 pm
You know enough about him now to know he was disrespectful, in this instance.
He has free will, he could have sang our Nation’s national anthem with respect.
He could have acted like a wonderful gentleman, instead of pandering to whomever.
Respect does not = weakness.
Quite the contrary.
Hoping to see him act like a gentleman, from this point forward.
Jerry Clower's Ghost
March 20, 2023 @ 4:18 pm
I’m confused. Are you saying I know enough about sbach66 to know he was being disrespectful, or I know enough about Blanco, to know he was being disrespectful? Because I was referring to sbach66 being respectful. If you’re saying Blanco was being disrespectful, then why is that? Like I said, I don’t know shit about this dude or why he would be inclined to be disrespectful about the anthem. Why is it not in the realm of possibility that he’s just a shitty artist who thought it would play well? I feel like I’m missing something here.
March 20, 2023 @ 5:35 pm
Was referring to Mr. Brown.
If Blanco Brown was intentionally disrespectful at the end of the anthem, i’m calling him out for the disrespect.
If he does not care to sing the anthem, have no problem with that.
Just tell the producers, business managers, recording company he is not doing it.
If he is being contractually “forced” to do it, then he should pick an appropriate time to discuss his opposition.
March 20, 2023 @ 5:51 pm
I’ll be clear for my part. I have no problem calling him out for his “rendition” of the National Anthem – it’s a damn shame that he was doing a more or less ok job and then chose to completely go off the rails at the end. He earned every bit of scorn and derision for that.
But this whole business of calling him a “creature” because of that or because of his shitty-ass music is pathetic.
Jerry Clower's Ghost
March 20, 2023 @ 5:52 pm
But why is this being perceived as disrespectful? People flub the anthem all the time and they’re not accused of this. Maybe he just made a bad creative choice.
Jerry Clower's Ghost
March 20, 2023 @ 3:56 pm
Calling him an ‘it’ and ‘creature’ is just fucking pathetic man. It makes you look like a little bitch.
March 20, 2023 @ 7:15 pm
Only bitches I see are the ones crying because BigTex expressed his opinion of BB. You don’t have to like it, but BT is entitled to feel the way he feels.
March 20, 2023 @ 8:22 pm
Of course BT is entitled to feel the way he feels. And we’re entitled to say what we feel, which is that someone named “Big Tex” calling a black man a “creature” is not a good look in 2023, regardless of how bad a singer Blanco Brown is. Does it need to be spelled out any further for you? Now back to bashing on crappy “country” music in this thread…
Jerry Clower's Ghost
March 20, 2023 @ 10:42 pm
Who’s crying? I expressed my opinion that Big Tex is a little bitch. Why are you crying about it?
March 20, 2023 @ 12:15 pm
Not everyone can be Whitney Houston. But everyone tries. Even those who have no business trying.
Is this really damaging to country music though? How many people actually know who he is or that he’s supposed to be “country”?
March 20, 2023 @ 1:15 pm
If you’re a mainstream country fan, you know Blanco Brown, and you know him as a country artist. That is the reason they booked him to sing the National Anthem. Is it going “damage” country? Probably not. But it definitely feeds into the mindset these days that country music is going in the wrong direction that we regularly hear from sports commentators these days.
March 20, 2023 @ 12:56 pm
Omigod! How the hell did he squeak that final note? Blanco probably knew he’d get some press time for that…. and even bad publicity keeps your name afloat… but, yuck!
March 20, 2023 @ 2:32 pm
Ok… I did not expect it to end that way
Jerry Clower's Ghost
March 20, 2023 @ 3:04 pm
Hey Trig, I heard that was actually the fault of the sound guy who accidentally tipped over his Starbucks, and when he went to grab it, he accidentally bumped the lever with the “pomeranian getting drilled in the ass effect”. Really, it’s just an honest mistake, and I think we really have to give Blanco a pass here.
March 20, 2023 @ 3:33 pm
To be fair, the Star Spangled Banner is a crappy anthem.
“There were one quadrillion nations in the Universe, but [America] was the only one with a national anthem which was gibberish sprinkled with question marks.” – Kurt Vonnegut
March 20, 2023 @ 3:48 pm
It was better as a theme song for a club of British nerds, well music and theater guys, so in all likelihood The Anacreontic club had it’s fair share of gay dudes. I will always find it funny that the flag fucker crowd is so enamored with the anthem but knows nothing about it’s origin. Nothing more American than stealing something and taking all the credit!
March 20, 2023 @ 5:29 pm
March 20, 2023 @ 5:30 pm
I think the guy was going for a note similar to what Sammy Hagar did on When It’s Love with Van Halen. The part where he sings “ you can feel it” towards the end. Even if he nailed it, it doesn’t work as a final note.
Off topic: Last night I had Morgan Wallen’s song Keith Whitley on repeat simply out of sheer amazement that the song made it on a major release. Wow is it a dumpster fire.
Wilson Pick It
March 20, 2023 @ 6:01 pm
The Git Up is kind of catchy. Don’t @ me. And the Star Spangled Banner is wicked hard to sing. Let’s be real, it should not be the national anthem, almost no one can sing it properly. This Land is Your Land would be perfect, but the US of A can’t stomach an anthem by a leftist. So we’re stuck with garbage.
March 20, 2023 @ 8:02 pm
Trace Adkins has sung it w respect & has done it proud
March 20, 2023 @ 6:11 pm
What. The. Actual. Fuck.
March 21, 2023 @ 2:50 am
NASCAR needs to stop paying for this. They never sing the Anthem they way it was written, they have to “show off” and end up screwing it up. Maybe get a local HS band or something a lot better than these narcissists individuals
March 21, 2023 @ 6:07 am
Lol, every single one of you bringing “Respect” into this argument.
March 21, 2023 @ 8:58 pm
Right? There is only one Aretha!
March 22, 2023 @ 5:27 am
Actually Otis Redding had R-E-S-P-EC-T similar to Warren Zevon having Poor Poor Pitiful Me before Linda Rondstant
March 21, 2023 @ 11:41 am
I think it’s obvious…..Mr Brown was channeling his inner…..Mariah Carey….
David: The Duke of Everything
March 21, 2023 @ 2:34 pm
Kind of stupid but of course you have many people on here disrespecting the anthem so no one should be surprised. The anthem isn’t that hard to sing. I don’t listen to it expecting an Elvis voice. Just sing it normal which he was for most of it and it will be fine.
March 21, 2023 @ 5:12 pm
Don’t be too hard on the guy. Just another tool for the woke crowd and he is too dumb to know.
March 21, 2023 @ 8:01 pm
Respectfully, putting aside the slew of varied comments here and the fact I’ve never heard this guy before, it appears he can sing. More so than I ever could ever dream of doing. My only thought here is maybe dude tried hitting a note and it just came out terrible. Things happen man. What else can you do if you make a mistake in the moment? No excuse to pile on all this random hatred and comments. Who hasn’t made a mistake at their job. SCM comment section is the most judgmental crowd you’ll run into…
March 22, 2023 @ 3:53 am
March 22, 2023 @ 12:53 pm
He’s done it before, obviously with more success. I think he tried to replicate that former performance, but his voice gave out and yes it sounded weird – I now have to go find my cat, all hair standing straight he bolted out of the room. Darn Trigger can’t you put a warning label on sh,t like this?
March 23, 2023 @ 6:31 am
You know he practiced. Did he not have one friend or colleague who was brave enough to tell him that it was a horrible choice?
March 24, 2023 @ 7:44 pm
It’s one thing to interpret a piece of music. It’s quite another to exploit and overwhelm it. I guess that’s the difference between nuance and talent versus sensationalism and self absorption.
Artistic license is an interesting. For instance, take Linda Ronstadt’s “Tracks of My Tears” or Trace Adkins treatment of “Wayfaring Stranger”. Both songs well done and very personal.
Why is it we remember Whitney Houston’s rendition after all these years? Because it, too, was tasteful, nuanced and definitely personal.
Voices don’t have to be “beautiful” either ( contralto or gravel and smoke). But the care and presentation make the moment.
And another thing, lnow your audience – basic rule of reputation building, positive or negative…
Even Rosanne would cringe…
