Charley Crockett Wants You To Call Him At (512) 380-1890
Traditional country and authentic bluesman Charley Crockett released his latest record Welcome To Hard Times on July 31st, but he’s just now hitting his stride in trying to convince you to give it a listen. The native Texan with authentic Davy Crockett blood is now one of the cats at the top of the heap trying to saving country music, and he’s taking a few unique approaches to trying to promote his music.
Lately Charley Crockett billboards have been spotted in Nashville, Times Square in New York, and other places. Perhaps it’s a strange way for an independent artist to promote their music, but Crockett is used to trying to convince folks on street corners to give him a listen. “The only logo you see on there is mine,” Crockett says of the billboards. “Lots of folks just waitin’ around for a gate keeper to break ‘em off. I’ve been told no the whole way here. But I learned how to stand behind my guitar on a street corner and nobody can take that away from me.”
Some of the Billboards are also encouraging fans to give Charley Crockett a call at (512) 380-1890. Dialing the phone number, fans get an opportunity to hear two unreleased songs from the Welcome To Hard Times sessions in “Oh Jeremiah” and “When Will My Troubles End,” and get the opportunity to opt into Crockett’s fan club. Rumor has it that if you call at the right time, Charley Crockett may even answer himself.
It’s all part of the inventive way Charley Crockett has been promoting Welcome To Hard Times, including a series of videos shot Out West and other places, with the one constant being a canary yellow rotary phone. Crockett can be seen in the latest installment for the song “Wreck Me” singing into the phone (see below). Who knows, perhaps if you call Charley Crockett, he will sing to you too.
Stuck at home and unable to tour, artists are facing trying times, and trying to figure out ways to stay in the spotlight. Having to cancel his tour promoting the new record, Crockett is doing his best hustle to still get you to pay attention.
And if you happen to be in Texas, he is planning a few socially distanced acoustic shows, playing at The Kessler in Dallas four times in two days on October 23rd and 24th, and at The Heights in Houston November 6th and 7th.

I also found him here and hearing him on Outlaw Country radio (this site has found me soooooo many great artists and albums!) It’s a very good, unique album from a unique artist. I liked it so much I bought two more from him and are equally good.

I am going to have to make my way to The Kessler here in a couple of weeks, it seems.
I may pass on giving him a call, but I’ll buy this album and a hard copy of The Valley here now.

I’d buy it, but once again, no way to get it.
Postage to Australia is prohibitive, and I refuse to use Amazon and iTunes. Seriously, its not hard to set up a ‘buy digital’ on your website.
And while your at it, minimum 320 mp3.
I get that I may represent a small market, but a market none the less.

Charley Crockett with “authentic Davey (Davy) Crockett blood.”
Right.
And I am the grandson of Tex Ritter and the great nephew of Tex Williams.

Well Tex, he is from San Benito Texas. His Wikipedia page has him as a distant relative of Davy and most articles on him mention this. In some interview I read that he or his family did a genealogy and found this out. I ts not like its helped his career any. The dude has had a rough life to say the least. There’s no money coming his way because of it and I’m sure no ones giving him a Key to the city over it either. But he has worked very hard busking on trains, living homeless at times,, losing a sister to addiction,, and surviving major heart surgery so…at the end of the day, if its true , well yay. If not. Ok its a nice story and personally I could care less either way.
Personally, I see him as the little underdog that rose up with very little help. Hes pulled himself out of poverty with a work ethic and relentless drive to succeed. And hes played the Opry and won Honky Tonk artist of the year at the Ameripolitan Awards. Not bad ya think?

Kevin:
Thanks for your review of Charley Crockett’s life and career, none of which I have a problem with. In fact, I think his rendition of “Jamestown Ferry” is great! But if you’re a Texan or Tennessean, then you would no doubt know that one does not go spouting off about being “a direct descendant of Davy Crockett” without PROVIDING SOME PROOF! It’s not enough to say, “Well . . . my mama told me that . . . one of her grandad’s cousins . . . was an uncle . . . to . . . some guy named “Crockett.”
I have personal knowledge of direct descendants of Davy Crockett here in Texas, and Charley is not on the list. The list is incomplete, so the chance that he is a descendant remains open.
He may well be a “direct descendant” of Davy Crockett, and, if so, MORE POWER TO HIM.
But to say I am “skeptical” is an understatement.
If you are not skeptical, then that’s your problem.

The guy claims he’s a distant relative of Davy Crockett and I have no reason to believe he’s lying. Do I have to independently obtain a cheek swab and 23andMe profile on everybody who claims they’re related to someone famous before posting it? It’s an interesting footnote, not something he’s using to run for Congress on. Sorry if it disrupts your notions of Aryan purity.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Charley; however, I can’t help but notice that he has been able to avoid the criticisms that have been directed towards mainstream country artists like Midland. He markets himself in the same manner Midland does with his retro outfits. Maybe that will change in a few years as his popularity increases, but I have a feeling the lack of criticism will continue. I totally understand why he does it and honestly good for him; he’s building a strong brand for himself. I just don’t think its fair that Midland catches flack from critics for their image and he doesn’t. I personally enjoy the musical output from both artists, even though they are 100% hipsters in country clothing.

I was at a brewery the other day and Charley’s new album was playing through on the sound system. Everything about it felt right. I immediately went home and downloaded it. I love this new album. The title track is one of my favorite songs right now.

I’m probably won’t call. But years ago I called a number that was in a Don Walser CD insert to order a T-shirt, and Patricia Jane answered the phone. I think it was at their house. I ordered an XL. I told her not a Don XL, just a regular XL. She laughed at that. She told me to send a check. She sent the shirt right away on the same day–before she could have even received the check. I don’t really wear T-shirts imuch n public, but I like to wear the Don Walser and the Pure Texas Band shirt in my building, when I go down to do laundry and stuff.
