Chris Stapleton Drops New Tour Dates – Shows Selling Out Fast
Riding the momentum of two Grammy wins, Chris Stapleton has announced a slew on new concert dates, and it appears some fans hoping to see him in a smaller venue before things get really crazy will have their opportunity, that is if the show hasn’t already sold out. Along with previously-announced dates opening for Hank Williams Jr. and Luke Bryan in amphitheaters and stadiums, Stapleton has unveiled a slew of dates in theaters, smaller municipal auditoriums, and casinos.
The tour dates also include a trip to Europe and performances at the Country to Country Festival tour in March, performances at Stagecoach, Coachella, and Bonnaroo, and a co-headlining show with Jason Isbell for lucky folks in Columbia, Maryland. Many dates have already sold out.
According to HITS Daily Double, sales of Stapleton’s Grammy-winning album Traveller spiked 211% after the Grammy Awards. That puts Stapleton 9th on the list of post-Grammy risers, led by James Bay with a spike of 1,300%. Though the surge is certainly welcome by Stapleton, it is nowhere near what happened after he performed on the CMA awards in November. In the aftermath of Stapleton’s three CMA wins and collaboration with Justin Timberlake, sales of Traveller spiked 6,400%, and the album went #1 all genre. It was the biggest post-awards show bump in recent memory.
One of the possible reasons Stapleton did not spike any more after the Grammy Awards is because he did not play one of his own songs. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Stapleton insists that it was his decision. “You reach a point on a record where we’ve played virtually everything off of it, with the exception of maybe ‘Was It 26,’ on TV. [Grammys executive producer] Ken Ehrlich gave me the option of the B.B. King tribute or a song off my record. Secretly, when we’re warming up in soundcheck, that’s the kind of stuff I want to play the blues. So it was a real treat to get to do that on that stage.”
Playing Seth Myers and the Grammy Awards are two separate things, and I’m sure some hardcore Stapleton fans wouldn’t have minded hearing the same televised Stapleton song twice. It certainly hasn’t stopped Little Big Town from performing their Grammy-winning song “Girl Crush” over and over on network TV. We’ll see if Stapleton decides to play someone else’s song Wednesday night on Kimmel.
Meanwhile if you want to see Chris Stapleton live in anything smaller than an amphitheater, you better do it quick. Dates are selling out quick, and he won’t be playing small capacity venues for long. Anderson East opens on many of the theater dates.

The Bakersfield date was sold out in a minute. But over 1000 tickets were available immediately on stub hub/ vivid or other sites. I’m glad for CS, but it seems as if something less than ideal is going on.

This is happening throughout Music now. My wife’s parents wanted to go see Springsteen when he came to the Twin Cities, but tickets sold out in 4 seconds. I love Springsteen and know he has a lot of fans, but no way is he selling out a major venue in 4 seconds anymore. Ticket resellers are wrecking the live music experience for a lot of people.

Same thing here in Denver for two shows at The Fillmore. I don’t know what happened, but no way those two shows sold out in less than a minute. Something going on and it ain’t right.

Yup. Those resellers are terrible. The music venue I used to work at would get calls about shows, asking why tickets for so-and-so’s concert were $1,000 or something ridiculous. This happened sometimes when there were seats left…I think a lot of people just google and don’t pay attention and get ripped off, but I know those resellers also buy out entire shows leaving fans with no choice a lot of times. New York’s Attorney General recently did an investigation into this type of thing. I don’t know how anyone would fix it, but it’s a huge problem.

Well how convenient. The only show with Stapleton and Isbell together is right down the street! And I thought I’d have to travel far.

Still nothing in Mississippi or Louisiana I’m seeing so in a way I’m both happy and sad. Happy because no Hank Jr. but sad because no Stapleton or Isbell.

I’m just not sold on C S. I didn’t say I don’t like him, I’m just not gaga over his music like so many seem to be. I am however glad to see an artist like him gaining recognition and popularity because hopefully he will help more mainstream fans come to the realization that mainstream country music sucks and it needs to change.

Too many independent country fans fail to realize that, even if he’s not one of your favorite artists, it’s still a good thing for country music going forward.

Yeah, I get that…but I’d rather not go to a show where 90% of the people there will be teenage girls whining about how much this old bearded dude sucks and why can’t sexy Luke come out and “sing” (read: shake his ass) already.
I might reconsider, but I doubt it.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn’t even consider it. I’m not going to pay Luke Bryan prices just to see an opening set by Stapleton. And being around thousands of partying bro-country fans is something I refuse to subject myself to.

The Luke Bryan fans I know are all about Chris Stapleton (or at least they say they are.)
But that doesn’t change the fact that I totally agree I wouldn’t go to a Luke Bryan show for a Stapleton opener, for many reasons, crowd included.

Last summer, before the CMA’s (or whatever award show it was) that Stapleton took all the awards, I looked him up and he was playing near me here in California in a small theater for around $20. The wife and I had just had our baby and I passed, thinking she’d say no anyway. Then the awards show happened and she told me she looked him up and was upset as they were sold out.
Learned Jon Pardi is gonna be down the road from me tomorrow night and I can’t go (no baby sitter). I’m bummed.
Get on whatever site it is Garth sells his tickets when they go on sale. Wait for the damn robot thing to find you a seat. They’re in the nose bleeds within seconds.

Booooooo. We are stuck with a dumb Luke Bryan show up in the Northeast. Oh well. I saw him 2 years ago at a songwriters night at our Hard Rock Cafe. Sat two feet away and it was amazing. I’ll hold onto that memory and experience.

Out of curiosity…
What does a 200% bump mean exactly? That if (for example) he was selling 100 albums or stream equivalents per day he’s now selling 300?

What are total sales of Traveler since last May?
Sauron the Deceiver
February 18, 2016 @ 7:21 am
Not sure about the 200% bit, but I do know that “Traveller”‘s total sales as of last Friday were 862,500. That means that with the Grammy bump (projected to sell another 55-60,000 albums), he’ll overtake Luke Bryan’s “Kill The Lights” this week.

I’m usually not one to get caught up in “country music savior” talk and I also very much appreciate that there was a reverent tribute to B.B. King at the Grammys, but I can’t help but lament the opportunity lost for good country/roots music by Stapleton deciding not to do one of his own songs. I’m guessing that the Grammys TV audience is considerably larger than the CMA’s. Also, there may have been a good number of viewers who typically blow off anything labeled country music that Chris could have reached. I think he could have KILLED with one of his more crossover type songs like Tennessee Whiskey or Sometimes I Cry.
Merriweather Post in Columbia, MD is about 60 miles from me. I know where I’ll be at 10:00 am tomorrow when tickets go on sale for Stapleton/Isbell.

I’m happy for him to have these opportunities, and I expect him to deliver good music for many years to come. Selfishly, it’s a bit frustrating to try to get tickets. I’m thinking of some of the interesting venues he played when he was first getting rolling with the Steeldrivers. They recorded a live album in late 2006 at the Station Inn before they were on a label, and were the first act at Bluegrass Underground at Cumberland Caverns. The Station Inn has hosted so many of the top people “before they were stars” (Stapleton, Simpson, etc), despite being a rather modest-looking venue.

This is nuts.
Just last summer I watched him front row under a highway in Chicago. And people were walking away from his set early to get a spot for LEE BRICE.
Now you can’t get a ticket for the guy.
And people say the CMA’s don’t matter.

And while the Windy City Smokeout festival was wonderful last year little worried with the current headline announcements.
