Chris Stapleton, Willie Nelson, Jamey Johnson to Help Open Stadium
Getting to see Chris Stapleton, Willie Nelson, or Jamey Johnson individually is probably worth your country music time. Put them all together on one bill and it’s a no brainer if you’re within driving distance or otherwise. Throw in upsurging country-soul queen Yola from the U.K. whose having a breakout year in 2019, and it’s a bill for the ages.
On March 14th, the Texas Rangers baseball franchise and the City of Arlington will be opening their brand new retractable roof stadium in the Dallas/Ft.Worth suburb. The new Globe Life Park will be located near the Dallas Cowboys AT&T Stadium, as well as the current open-air baseball park that is being retrofitted for XFL and soccer games. And they’ve tapped into some massive country music talent to celebrate the opening.
Though the current Texas Rangers ballpark is only 25-years-old and is considered one of the better ballparks in the league, the brutal Texas summers resulted in poor attendance during 100-degree days. With the smaller capacity of the new stadium, it will also make for a better stadium option for music performances compared to the cavernous AT&T Stadium with its capacity twice that of the new Globe Life Park.
The show is officially part of Chris Stapleton’s current All-American Roadshow tour, with Willie Nelson and Family playing right before Stapleton, and Jamey Johnson and Yola opening up. Tickets go on sale November 1st at 10:00 a.m. Central. Stapleton Fan Club pre-sale will begin October 29th at 10:00 a.m. Central.
After a few years of struggling to write new songs, Chris Stapleton appears to be coming out of his writers block and has been featuring numerous new songs in his live set this summer, including a song named “Minimum Wage” co-written with Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers fame, as well as another called “Bad Side of The Blood.” And then just this month, Stapleton revealed a third new acoustic song called “Starting Over.” He’s also been playing a song with concert openers Brothers Osborne called “Get Down to Arkansas.”
Don’t be surprised if 2020 sees a new single, and a new album from Stapleton.

We are going a few weeks later in Lexington, Kentucky… Stapleton, Willie, Sheryl Crow, and Yola. I’d like to swap out Crow for Johnson, but have you seen/heard Jamey’s shows lately? Bongos and horns of all kinds and chimes … barely resembles country.
Hey I just read somewhere that new Hootie song “Hold On” was written by Stapleton. I went back to your Hootie article from earlier in the week and didn’t see that mentioned.

I should add the Lexington date is being touted as “A Concert for Kentucky” … a benefit show for Kentucky schools.

My other immediate thought when these shows were announced: Is this the way Willie tours going forward – as a super co-headliner. With all the cancelations and the fact he rarely plays over an hour anymore, it might make sense.
The Kentucky show was the first announced. It was presented as a benefit show in Stapleton’s home state. Ok, it’s nice for Willie to lend a helping hand. But, the Arlington show is in Texas … where Willie is king.
I’m thinking there will be more of these Stapleton shows released in the coming days/ weeks were Willie is the co-headliner and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the less strenuous and demanding co-headliner slot going forward more often for other artists.

I can’t believe you feel that way about Jamey Johnson. He’s pure country and the reason I would make the flight from SC to TX. He’s amazing!! Feel as you will but I don’t agree at all. Have a nice night. 😜

Tony,
We all shake our heads at Johnsons refusal to put out new work. There are two operating theory’s going on about it. One is that he’s in a perpetual dispute with his label head. Then there was Jamey saying a couple years ago that he had this mental block and couldn’t write anymore due to some sort of head injury he had. I could tell you more , at least some observations from a touring musician that knows , but I don’t want to talk bad about the guy. He’s insanely talented and one of the great voices of modern times. Caught his live tour this year and loved it. He’s got a smoking band. The night I saw, he had special guest Rowdy Cope who now plays in the Steel Woods with him. Rowdy was Jamey’s lead player for years, so it was great to see him jamming with the band. Personally, didn’t mind the horns either.

I like him. He’s got respect for the older songwriters and artists in Nashville. I just saw him at the Dottie West Birthday Bash at 3rd and Lindsley and he’s great live.
As far as new material, I’ll take quality over quantity. I’d rather never hear from him again than see him release something like Sound and Fury. That’s just my selfish two cents lol.

Maybe with Jamey not releasing new music its a count your blessings thing. Dude is clearly having some issues. Best he plays the classics instead of pulling a Zack Brown and destroy the last of the goodwill people have towards him.

I might have to make the flight from FLA to DFW to make this happen.

I had actually been planning a trip to Dallas/Ft. Worth during this week, and now I guess I HAVE to go to this. Sounds like a great time.

To Willie and Chris please think about your fans at this time. Their will be so many people gathered at the new stadium. My kids for one, I know if it’s not canceled my kid are going no matter what they just love both of you. I would hate if some one their was sick with the Coronavirus. Then what?
