CMT’s “Sun Records” Will Not Be Renewed for Second Season
A show that gave a fresh shot in the arm to the legacy of Sun Records and artists like Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis will not be renewed for a second season. CMT’s series Sun Records has been canceled after an eight episode run behind the network’s now signature series, Nashville. Starring Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, Jonah Lees, with cameos from folks like Pokey LaFarge playing Hank Snow, the series was set in Memphis during the birth of rock and roll at the iconic studio landmark the show was named for.
According to CMT’s head of development, Jayson Dinsmore, fans should be happy they got as many episodes as they did, while also saying the series was a success in its short run, and leaving open the possibility of a return. Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and 585,000 viewers per episode. Though these would be low numbers for a network television show, they fall into the average viewership for a CMT series.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night event, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” says Jayson Dinsmore. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
The Sun Records series, and Nashville‘s move from ABC were part of a change in strategy from CMT to distance from the controversial reality series Party Down South, and instead focus on television that catered more to their conventional demographics as “Country Music Television.” Though Sun Records was never a ratings king, it found a lot of positive reception with old school country and rock fans. Jerry Lee Lewis and other living members of the original Sun Records scene praised the show.
Coming back to CMT are the Billy Ray Cyrus-led show Still The King, the unscripted I Love Kellie Pickler, among other shows.

I love this show! I hope someone picks it up. I don’t think a lot of people knew about it. It just might explode somewhere else with the right advertising.

I agree with you Donna Danaj, and others, that there were a lot of people that did not know about the show. I had spoke with several of my family & friends about the show, and they had not heard about it, & were interested, after it was probably to late to get the ratings up. I truly feel that had more people known about the show, it would have been a huge success. Hopefully it gets thought about very seriously to bring it back, whether it be CMT, or someone else to pick it up. People love music, I think with more advertising & getting the word out there, you would be surprised. I enjoyed each & every show, as well as recorded them.

I hate that networks are continuously keeping silly shows and cancelling those that are legitimately worthy! What is wrong with this world? Would like to complain but it falls on deaf ears.

THE ONLY REASON THIS SHOW DIDNT GET MORE VIEWERS IS CUZ NOBODY KNEW ABOUT IT!!!!!!! This show was such an original and would have picked up steam with a lot more viewers if they had continued. I am pretty picky with my TV watching and I couldn’t wait to see it every week. This show was well written, well acted, and just had a look and feel that was fantastic. BRING IT BACK CMT – I PROMISE YOU WON’T BE DISAPPOINTED – PEOPLE JUST NEED HEAR MORE ABOUT IT AND IT WILL CATCH ON THROUGH WORD OF MOUTH. KEEP IT GOING OR SELL IT TO ANOTHER NETWORK!!!!!

October 28, 2017 @ 5:17 am
I’m so bummed out about this, CMT, you barely scratched the surface of the history and events that was to come for sun records. I know it wasn’t young kid friendly but my nieces 15 and 17 (who are now asking all these questions) example: what about johnny cash and jerry lee lewis. The series basically ended with those two selling door to door. I know most of us know that’s not where their journey ended. But, my nieces still want to see more as do I. I loved this show. And looked forward to another season. If thats all the episodes we were going to get and CMT knew that. I just wish the story could’ve went a bit faster so we could we could’ve learned more about sun records legacy, and the country music icons, Cash and Lewis, etc. It’s like an unfinished book. But I’m only one person. I just loved watching my young nieces learn about the history of some of the greatest country music icons, and where, and how it all started for them.

I am very bummed about sun records too. They left it open. I was really enjoying seeing where all our famous singers came from and got their start. I really hope Netflix or another network takes it over. There is so much more story to tell. I think they would’ve had a lot more viewers if more knew about the show. I have a lot of friends that would’ve watched if they had known about it so I know there has to be a lot out there that would’ve watched it too. Thanks for your comment.

Cash claims that Elvis performed “This Train is Bound for Glory” and “Vacation in Heaven” during the 1956 session, but neither track has surfaced. The musical it’s based on, Million Dollar Quartet, is truly an exciting event that shouldn’t be missed. I often say Buddy Holly would have made it complete.

They used the wrong demographic. I am 72 and loved the series as it featured up and coming rock and country stars of MY ERA…not the 18-45 group. CMT obviously is not interested in our market share! Not a problem, I will simply NOT watch their programming in the future!

Loved the show. Don’t know why it was canceled. I thought it was a great show, better then some of these stupid reality shows that keep going on and on and on. You didn’t even give it a chance. Guess you don’t know a good show when it sits right in your lap.

Hugh
November 18, 2017 @ 5:17 pm
Doubt it Bob. There is so much argument about what really happened then. That, added to the fact that the people portrayed actually existed, they weren’t just made up characters. It left too many witnesses and family members who heard different stories. Industry people who passed on stories and memorabilia would get in the way. Nashville was a soap opera. Sun Records is supposed to be history.

Really bummed, because of my work schedule at the time was not able to watch in real time but I always recorded so I could have some me time and watch. I really enjoyed this show and was sad to hear that the second season was cancelled. Figures CMT would cancel a show actually dealing with the history of Country/Rock but choose to put on garbage like Floribama Shore and Party Down South. I remember when you could turn on CMT at anytime during the day…and guess what….it was Country Music!!…Really miss the CMT of the 90s…

December 14, 2017 @ 3:35 am
CMT is making the EPIC mistake of relying on a way outdated 40-plus year old TV audience rating system that even Nielsen doesn’t use today; CMT’s decision well proves it’s DETACHMENT from the REALITY of having a popular first season run program series that clearly earned a second season!!! Sun Records was hot–and I’m surprised this Jason Dimmore doesn’t realize this.

Great! Something actually worth watching and it’s cancelled. Not sure about anyone else but I’m tired of these stupid reality shows. This is what’s wrong with kids. They watch thus crap and can’t figure out why life isn’t really like this. Cancel a show real adults like for a show where a dumb blonde gets paid to act stupid. Gee that’s what I want to watch. Thanks CMT I had a little hope for you. It’s gone.

CMT COULD DRAW UP A PARTITION AND ASK ALL THOSE THAT SUPPORTED THIS SHOW TO EMAIL AND SIGN IT TO BRING IN THE SPONSORS.AFTER ALL IT IS ABOUT THE MONEY AND ALL THE GARBAGE THAT IS ON TV TODAY THAT IS SUPPORTED BY MAJOR COMPANIES MANY OF US THAT ENJOY THIS REFRESHING MUSIC PROGRAM AND THE HISTORY BEHIND IT WOULD GET THE WORD OUT THRU SOCIAL MEDIA IT PROBABLY COULD GO VIRAL IF IT WAS GIVEN THE CHANCE. YES I KNOW I AM SHOUTING BUT CAN NOT GET CMT TO LISTEN UNLESS WE COULD MAKE THEM SEE THE DOLLAR SIGNS THAT COULD BE HAD!!!!!!!

I cannot tell you how disappointed I am to see this. I just kept waiting for the 2nd season to begin. It was honestly my favorite show. Each episode left me wanting more. This is a disgrace, to all those music legend’s. Every one has been on edge, hoping and patiently waiting for season two of this great show. Every one who watched, loved it. Week after week. And after waiting so long, it’s not going to be renewed? Billy Rae will but not Sun Records? This is a outrage. You finally put a great show on for Country Legend’s that revolves around people my age and generation and then pull it? I personally and I hope others, will not watch CMT again. You get entangled in a show you enjoy and wait patiently for the new season, and the story has just began, and political views stop the show, and not taking the advice of the people that make you’re channel. I love country music, its a reminder of how I was raised and were music got it’s start. I for one am completely done with CMT. So thanks.

January 3, 2018 @ 10:22 am
Please give the show one more shot. It’s the only show thats been on CMT, that had some true meaning behind it. The actors where great, the music was great and it gave me a glimpse of the 50s an era that love, I was born in the 80s so for me it was reminder of the stories I’ve heard from grandparents. You all have really messed up. This show really shows how talent was discovered and how hard these gus worked before all these singing contest shows.

I don’t care to watch to much television anymore because it is always stupid reality stuff. Im not interested in who marries who, or who can cook, or who stay in a jungle but Sun Records was something I did enjoy. Executives always worrying about the young people, what about us older people. What we don’t matter? We pay cable just like younger people do. We don’t have to much on tv to get excited about but this show was one we could all enjoy and you take it off. Pleaae reconsider this and bring it back. Thank you

Sooo very disappointed that Sun Records won’t be getting a 2nd season. As someone who is not partial to country music, shows like Sun Records and Nashville have expanded my interest in learning and understanding more about the culture. I’m sad that we won’t get to see these artist histories played out and that Nashville’s last season is coming to an end as well.

Please renew for more…..

What I find surprising is that CMT, a network dedicated to bringing great country music to the public, turns it’s back on it’s history. You would rather show reality crap because it is cheaper to produce. Shame on you. You do a disservice to your viewers and to the music.

Been waiting for 2nd season and just learned its canceled. Wth is wrong with the people who decided it’s not good enough? Every time they get a good show like ” Sun Records ” or another like “Vinyl ” on another network , they cancel it. Yet we are to endure all the stupid reality shows. Like someone else said all the stories and all the songs it could go on for many seasons. When will the networks realize the “Baby Boomers ” are a large viewing audience and have the money to buy what is advertised. Bring back Rock and Roll !

We really loved the show and can’t believe it won’t be coming back with more episodes. They really need to re-evaluate their decision. My 2 favorite shows are no longer on tv. Last Man Standing off the air because of the arrogance of politics in Hollywood. Sun Records off the air due to poor decisions by the station.

I just re-watched the recordings of Sun Records on my TV with my daughter, and both of us loved every minute of it. While I can see why it’s controversial, it is very realistic. I lived those days, and the people, accents, attitudes displayed in this series were right on. Somebody (writer?actor?director?) really got a good take on that era. Please bring it back It far exceeds today’s TV fare. Jean Queppet.

Come on CMT, bring back Sun Records! It’s a great show with a great cast and much better than any other show on any network right now. We’ve seen the success of history based shows such as “Genius” that profiled Einstein last season and Picasso this season. Sun Records is in that category only better because it’s the history of Rock and Roll. BRING SUN RECORDS BACK!
rick
May 15, 2018 @ 2:50 pm
Why would you cancel a great show that celebrates the history of rock and roll and country music. So called reality and poorly written sitcoms survive while well scripted and entertaining shows such as Sun Records disappear because a 19 year old audience prefers shoot-em -up , sci fi and reality shows featuring dim witted people eating worm and wallowing in muddy swamps. The network heads should wake up and take notice of who your audience really is. Ever heard of grey power. Wake up and bring it back.

What can we do to change there minds? And get it back on. My family LOVED it!!!
It seems, they leave the show on just long enough you could really hooked. And then take it away . That’s not fair to the people who love it so much. and if people don’t like it they don’t have to watch.
Please put it back on. Someone please pick it up.

I have been waiting to hear about Season 2 and decided to Google search and found this. What a disappointment! I don’t watch CMT for any reason at all anymore. I really liked this show and hoped it would continue. I can only wish now that another network picks it up and continues it or somebody wakes up at CMT and realizes all their other shows are trash!

I especially enjoyd the ep where Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart—the two young white teens–were being escorted out of Big Haneys[a black ownde ‘jook joint’]:) Thouogh the owner said he did like the ‘boogie woogie’ piano playing of Jerry Lee.
Also liked how young Elvis was welcomed into the black churches–this during the time of ENFORCED segregation–and enjoyed the electricity in the gospel music; he found the white church services boring. I was also impressed that there was no sugar coating.
As a ‘colored’, the CMT honchos have some ‘splaining to do. Seems like they have a GREAT IGNORANCE aout how the various genres—country, blues, gospel and sould—coalesced to form what we now call rock and roll.
As an aside, Alan Freed was the first to use the term ‘rock and roll’ for a show that was held in Cleveland, OH. This was back in 1952. Three years before Bill Hailey and his Comets would make rock and roll safe for ‘white USA’ to Rock Around The Clock.

So Jayson Dinsmore said “fans should be happy they got as many episodes as they did.” Am I the only one who thinks this remark is as bit snarky and condescending? The show was excellent, but CMT blew it; gave it ZERO publicity! It COULD have been a smash if the channel had even tried to get the word out! Makes me wonder if the honchos there even KNOW what Country is…or even care. They really blew it this time!

Loved Nashville and was glad it got second life at CMT. Watched and became enthusiastic about Sun Records. Saw every episode first run. Got really invested in it and then…poof.
But every stupid A$$ “reality” show lives on in perpetuity. THIS, CMT, is why I seldom watch your network.
Caught the marathon rerun just the other weekend and it just reminded my why I despise CMT these days. Bring back some decent programming so I have a reason to watch again.

Aww, I just watched the marathon and instantly fell in love with the show. I looked and looked everywhere to try and find more episodes or season 2 and it was cancelled. Very sad to hear this. Really good show!!

This show was really great and so much info and history. I’m in my 50’s I wasn’t born yet when sun records first started out so it was great to see how they began. Please start up season 2!

The lives of these super stars spanned many years, this show could have gone on for many years! There was so much richness to discover for each of the singers, their ups and downs; their trials and tribulations were epic.
I hope the show returns…..it was awesome!

I have never watched anything on CMT. My husband taped the series “Sun Records” and I got hooked as did everyone who watched this program. After finding out there would not be a second season, I have decided not to watch anything on CMT again. It’s unfair and Irresponsible to broadcast only one season of a series that leaves the viewer expecting future seasons When there is so much more to tell. As I’ve mentioned before I will never watch CMT again, and I thought I had found another medium to enjoy.

So disappointed that there will not be a season 2! Never watched before due to work schedules, other shows, family, and little advertisement , etc. I’m in my 60’s, grew up with this music. Still my favorite genre. Happened upon the marathon this past weekend. Started at 7 and stayed up till 3 am binge watching even though I had to get up for work the next day. Could not stop watching…just one more! SO disappointed there will be no more. TV has become so terrible to watch-so few shows that i want to give my time to. Reality shows? Yuck! Someone please bring it back!

This is so disappointing that you would cancel this show! We loved it! Im just confused as to why a network would spend money to produce this great show, but then not properly promote it???? I would never have known it existed if I wasn’t on CMT to watch reruns of Last Man Standing. There are so many people in this Country that are enamored with that era and the amazing musicians of that time. I just hope someone is smart enough to pick it up and produce a second season

Just stumbled on the series Sun Records and we loved it! Schocked to hear its been cancelled. It contained so many great story lines thatmarked a generational change in our societies music and CMT had it all to themselves and kept it quiet. SAD

This was one of the best programs I’ve seen on TV. I have been an Elvis fan since 1956. I also have most of Jerry Lee Lewis’ recordings and a lot of Carl Perkins and early Johnny Cash. There were a few discrepancies but the were minor. With all the reading I’ve done on Elvis I never knew there was something going on between Sam Phillips and Marion. What surprises me is all the things Elvis did for people, such as buying them cars etc, I don’t recall he did anything for Marion and she is the one who brought him to the attention of Sam Phillips. I hope somebody brings this series back for a 2nd season and perhaps even more.

Watched this when it first appeared and recommended it to a friend but by the time they got around to looking for it it was no longer available. I added it to my search file and eventually was able to record all 8 episodes. When my friend came to watch it all of a sudden several other neighbors asked to join and the next thing you know we had a huge house party over 2 nights watching Sun Records. Now they are all ticked at me because of the lousy ending. Soooooooo please consider renewing this show as it is really great!..
