Diplo, Nelly Booked at Stagecoach Despite Sexual Assault Claims

The 2023 lineup for the annual Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California was announced last week, and like always, it’s fun to pick out the cool names from the independent country realm in the smaller fonts that make it onto one of the biggest bills in country music. Along with major headliners like Chris Stapleton, Kane Brown, and Luke Bryan, you also have Drake Milligan, American Aquarium, Bella White, Jaime Wyatt, Logan Ledger, Kaitlin Butts, Sierra Ferrell, and 49 Winchester making the 2023 Stagecoach lineup.
But Stagecoach’s roster also includes a couple of individuals with very problematic pasts who also happen to reside outside the country genre, yet Stagecoach and similar events seem to be curiously accepting of these individuals, while other artists well within the country genre and with significantly less severe infractions on their record are deemed too problematic to book.
Hip-hop artist Nelly has been accused by three separate women of rape and sexual assault, including by one woman who accused Nelly of rape while he was on a country music tour with Florida Georgia Line. Diplo also continues to be an artist that Stagecoach is intimately involved with, often building their afterparty after the DJ and producer, even though many other events will not book him due to accusations of rape, and grooming underage girls.
While on tour with Florida Georgia Line, Nelly was arrested October 7th, 2017 in Auburn, Washington near Seattle after being accused of sexual assault by a local woman. Nelly, whose real name is Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., was arrested on his tour bus in a Wal-Mart parking lot where the alleged rape occurred.
According to Steve Stocker of the Auburn police, the woman called 911 and reported the rape at 3:48 am. After an investigation, police decided to charge Nelly on 2nd degree rape, and placed him under arrest. Later those charges were dropped by local authorities after the alleged victim—22-year-old Monique Green—said she was being harassed and smeared in the media after leaks from the local police department ended up on TMZ. She said she couldn’t trust the local police to fairly prosecute her case. Multiple stories involving Nelly’s attorney Scott Rosenblum also appeared on TMZ accusing Monique Green of being a gold digger and a liar.
Shortly after the arrest for 2nd degree rape, two more accusations against Nelly emerged. One was from a woman who says that Nelly assaulted her at an afterparty following a concert at a club in London, England called Koko. The victim alleges Nelly groped her, despite repeatedly staving off his unwelcomed advances in June of 2016. The woman said hearing the story of another victim in Washington State compelled her to come forward.
Then another sexual assault investigation commenced against Nelly by police in Essex, England less than 2 months after Nelly was arrested in Washington State. A woman claimed that after a show at Cliffs Pavilion in Essex on December 5th, 2017, she approached Nelly to take a picture with him. Nelly allegedly grabbed the woman by the arm and took her to his dressing room where he began to masturbate in front of her, and tried to take her top off and force her to perform oral sex on him. As she ran away, the accuser claims Nelly yelled at her and called her a “c*nt.”
Subsequently, a civil suit between Nelly and Monique Green was settled privately. The woman in the Cliff’s Pavilion incident also did not cooperate with authorities for undisclosed reasons. Nelly has never been convicted of any crime against a woman, and everyone has a right to be considered innocent until proven guilty. But despite the gravity of the charges—even while they were fresh and he was actively under investigation for rape—Nelly was allowed to continue on tour with Florida Georgia Line, and has since appeared at numerous country festivals, in other collaborations, and is a favorite of CMT specials.
Troubling behavior by Diplo—whose real name is Thomas Pentz—goes back much farther, and commonly involves young Black and Brown women, and sometimes young women who are under the age of consent. From 2003 to 2008, Diplo dated British-born rapper M.I.A., who is of Sri Lanken descent. In 2017, M.I.A. accused the DJ of mental abuse, of trying to take credit for her career, of taking credit for songs that weren’t his, of cheating on her, and even of using an image of her as a dart board.
In October 2020, rapper Azealia Banks spoke out about Diplo, saying on her podcast, “I used to have sex with Diplo when I was 17 (Diplo was in his 30s). Diplo definitely found me on f—ing Myspace. I always give him credit for f—ing launching my career off, but yeah, I had to give him some teenage pussy to do it. He’s always been preying on young ethnic girls.”
The allegations from Azealia Banks came after a woman named Shelly Auguste came forward to accuse Diplo of numerous offenses, including rape, grooming herself and other “very young girls,” hiring a private investigator to harass her and other young women to discourage them from coming forward, and distributing revenge porn against Auguste when she did eventually come forward.
According to Auguste, she had consensual sex with Diplo on numerous occasions, but in July of 2019, claimed Diplo forcibly held her down and raped her in a Las Vegas hotel room after a performance. Auguste also said she tested positive for chlamydia after the incident, blaming Diplo. According to lawyers for Diplo who reached out to Saving Country Music, they deny the DJ gave her chlamydia, and claim Auguste later tweeted, “that pedophile did not rape me.”
After Shelly Auguste came out with her accusations, she then claims Diplo distributed revenge porn against her as retaliation. Auguste filed and received a restraining order against Diplo, but charges were never filed in the alleged rape. Diplo claimed Auguste was an obsessed fan and denied all accusations, and received his own restraining order against her.
Then in 2021, a fourth woman came forward, claiming she was raped by Diplo in 2019 after a Las Vegas performance, saying Diplo “invited her to a room, kicked out her friends, and would not let her leave until she performed oral sex,” while also filming the encounter. Diplo staunchly denied the claims, and the unnamed accuser dropped the case 10 days later. According to Dilpo’s lawyers, this fourth woman was a friend of Shelly Auguste.
Neither of these men should be barred from making a living simply because of the accusations against them. But as other artists accused of significantly lesser infractions such as Ryan Adams are considered off limits, and Jason Aldean was recently dropped from his publicity agency for comments his wife made on Instagram that resulted in over 200 articles published about the incident, Nelly and Diplo are not even mentioned in tweets about being problematic for booking at the Stagecoach Festival.
If the country music community is serious about supporting women, offering a safe environment for women, and holding problematic artists and their behavior to account, the booking of Nelly and Diplo at one of country music’s biggest festivals should at the least be discussed, as opposed to brushed under the rug.
September 19, 2022 @ 9:59 am
Well until we have judges and people willing to take rape and underage sex seriously then none of this is going to matter. It’s been a minute but you had articles on that dj who basically got off Scott free for having sex with his daughters underage friend while on a sleepover, also some other girl. So nothing learned, nothing done even if they admit to it. So why should it be a big deal if these guys are invited to shows.
September 19, 2022 @ 10:00 am
What Ryan Adams did was egregious.
And Holy Non-sequitur what the fuck is wrong with you Trigger for somehow equating Jason Alden to this for statements his wife made?
September 19, 2022 @ 10:27 am
I agree that what Ryan Adams is accused of is egregious. What Nelly and Diplo have been a accused of is way worse, so let’s talk about that. That’s all I’m saying. Ryan Adams wasn’t booked at Stagecoach. No festival will book him. Nelly and Diplo were.
Jason Aldean’s wife’s Instagram account has nothing to do with country music, yet it’s resulted in hundreds of articles. How about we have one article about accused rapists being booked at a country music festival?
But the reason you don’t see them is because of comments like this here. You will be attacked for going against the fiercely hypocritical tenets of polite society, and the Twitter media echo chamber.
September 19, 2022 @ 10:45 am
…..”You will be attacked for going against the fiercely hypocritical tenets of polite society”….
It’s not hypocrisy; it’s hierarchy. These people aren’t bumbling hypocrites. Everything they do or don’t do publicly, has a purpose.
What would it take to get you to believe/understand that?
September 19, 2022 @ 11:43 am
Oh Honky, I love when you condescend me. It turns me on.
” These people aren’t bumbling hypocrites. Everything they do or don’t do publicly, has a purpose. What would it take to get you to believe/understand that?”
You don’t think I know this?
September 19, 2022 @ 12:03 pm
I’m sorry, Trig. I’m not trying to condescend you. Sometimes the things you say lead me to believe you don’t understand.
My perception of you, is that you’re such a nice guy, that you can’t fathom the idea that people would want to destroy their own country so badly, that they would do anything to make it happen, including running cover for rape, while screaming “Rape Culture!” out of the other side of their mouth.
‘Hypocrisy’ is nowhere near the best word to describe what’s going on.
September 19, 2022 @ 12:20 pm
When he is breaking rocks in the Gulag.
September 19, 2022 @ 2:48 pm
Way worse, you must not be a parent. These girls that Nelly and diplo attacked seemed to be adults who had some idea of what they were getting themselves into. Not saying they deserve it and those guys should definitely answer for it. But no it’s not worse than doing sexual stuff with your kids friends on a sleepover. The only thing worse is doing stuff to your own kids. Now I’m not saying those guys shouldn’t be at that show. Just saying we got to get to the point that stuff like that isn’t tolerated by anyone and until then these people are going to get passes.
September 19, 2022 @ 3:06 pm
David,
I think you responded to the wrong comment.
September 19, 2022 @ 7:32 pm
Sorry about that
September 20, 2022 @ 9:13 am
David,
All good. Just wanted to alert you so you can reply to the correct one!
September 19, 2022 @ 10:39 am
I believe Trig was just pointing out how swiftly these corporations are willing to comply with or align themselves with the interests of communists. But when there is an instance of someone doing, or being accused of something horrible, the communists don’t care, either because they can’t use the situation to destroy something, or because the perpetrator is black, and showing a black person doing something bad, has a negative impact on the silly race games they play.
For the silly race games to have the intended destructive impact, all non-whites must be portrayed as angelic, 100% of the time.
I know nothing about Diplo, but I’ll bet he’s a BLM supporter. You can bet your bottom dollar, that if he so much as wore a red ball cap on accident, these rape accusations would render him no longer employable.
September 19, 2022 @ 3:25 pm
For someone so apparently obsessed with Communism, one would think you might look the definition up at some point. Sorry to have to break it to you, but there are no corporations aligned with the interests of communists. The right accuses everything they disagree with of being communist while the left accuses everything they disagree with of being fascist. The majority of us scratch our head and wish they both would get a freaking dictionary.
September 19, 2022 @ 3:43 pm
Haha! Some of what Honky says could make sense if he didn’t cloak his view of the Country in McCarthyism. Also, don’t forget, the right accuses the left of both communism and facism.
September 19, 2022 @ 4:36 pm
Travis,
I’m not blaming you for your parents’ decision to send you to public school; I feel for you; but at some point you have to take responsibility and educate yourself.
September 19, 2022 @ 4:54 pm
Honky,
Let’s please stay on topic. Your “communist” comments make it so easy to veer the discussion in bad directions.
September 19, 2022 @ 5:14 pm
Trigger,
I realize that, and it isn’t my intent to have to discuss other commenters’ education.
Ultimately, it’s impossible to talk about these issues, without really talking about them. If we’re going to talk about why Nelly and Diplo are being ignored, then let’s talk about it. If we’re not going to talk about it, then why write about it?
September 19, 2022 @ 4:01 pm
You must be a victim of public school. That stinks.
September 20, 2022 @ 4:40 am
And you come across as real educated…
September 20, 2022 @ 6:40 am
Thank god my parents sent me to public school. I ended up with a masters in engineering as opposed to becoming some deranged nut spouting off about communism every day on a country music website. We’ve got home schooling and private Christian schools to thank for those fools.
September 20, 2022 @ 9:15 am
That is weird, Travis.
My siblings and I were homeschooled and attended Christian schools yet we have science and masters degrees galore.
Your narrowmindedness and bigotry is quite telling.
September 19, 2022 @ 5:34 pm
Honky was kinda funny in the old days, before he started going on about how he’s going to be murdering communists in the streets soon
September 19, 2022 @ 10:24 am
Didn’t follow all the blow-by-blow above, but I gleaned one thing:
If you’re a woman and do not wish to engage in sex with “Diplo” or “Nelly,” you should probably stay out of their hotel rooms.
September 19, 2022 @ 11:04 am
I had the same thought while watching the R. Kelly documentary series. How could these girls continue to want to meet him and date him when all those accusations were out in the public?
Hero worship is a dangerous thing I guess.
To be clear,I am NOT blaming the victims. Their bad judgment doesn’t make it okay to sexually assault them.
September 19, 2022 @ 12:22 pm
Because those two are rich, famous, successful, and alluring. All traits that many girls and women chase despite clear and obvious warning signs.
They all thought that they were the special one that wouldn’t get burned.
Standard human behavior.
September 19, 2022 @ 2:32 pm
I think you’re inadvertently making a point about why articles like these matter. I have brought up Diplo and Nelly in the past with women who were going to concerts/festivals; most of them have NO IDEA about these incidents. If you had no idea a performer behaved this way, and he invited you backstage or some other place, is it now your fault he tries to rape you?
September 19, 2022 @ 2:54 pm
I’m pretty sure that “Diplo” and “Nelly,” especially several years ago, when they were younger, had way more women than they could possibly handle trying to go with them to their hotel rooms–most of whom were out for physical activity (and I don’t mean aerobics) as much as they were.
September 19, 2022 @ 4:00 pm
“most of whom were out for physical activity (and I don’t mean aerobics) ”
crossfit?
September 19, 2022 @ 11:01 am
I can’t help but to wonder if it will take as long for Nelly to be held accountable as it took for R. Kelly to finally get what he deserved.
I have seen interviews with journalists who write for R&B industry publications that address the issue of the black community wanting to protect its “heroes” even as evidence mounts against them. Bill Cosby is another example of that. One main issue with bringing these guys to justice is that their victims tend to be young black women – a class that our culture devalues more than any other.
Having said that, there’s plenty of white predators involved in the entertainment world who also get passes for violent acts against women.
Country Music needs to make a clear statement that it won’t support me who behave violently against women – no matter what color they are.
Hell, the whole damn world needs to make that statement – and back it up with actions.
September 19, 2022 @ 11:10 am
This is no-news. Please get back to reviewing new artists.
Shameful. Ridiculous.
September 19, 2022 @ 11:19 am
How is this not news?
Trig makes an excellent point here about how the Country Music Industry is supporting two artists with a provable history of sexual violence.
If it’s NOT news, then that’s only because other journalists refuse to report it – and THAT is what is shameful and ridiculous.
September 19, 2022 @ 12:31 pm
Marissa Moss, is that you?
September 19, 2022 @ 11:30 am
Country music and mainstream news: Cancel Morgan Wallen!!!
Also country music and mainstream news regarding these two: crickets
September 19, 2022 @ 12:28 pm
Money makes strange bedfellows
September 19, 2022 @ 4:29 pm
Key words here are alleged and claimed. Anyone can claim anything. Prove it happened and we have another story.
September 19, 2022 @ 4:52 pm
Imagine if a high profile country artist like Jason Aldean was accused of rape. Once. His career would be over. The media would make a mountain out of it. Now, imagine he was accused of raping a woman while on tour, then a few weeks later, accused by another woman, and this inspired a third woman to come forward. It would make what happened with Morgan Wallen look like a popcorn fart.
Why Nelly and Diplo get passes, I cannot explain. As I said in the article, everyone has a right to work. But if we’re serious about holding country artists to account, how about we quit trying to cancel an artist because his wife runs a racy Instagram account, and spend a bit more time assessing why non-country artists who’ve been accused of rape and sexual misconduct multiple times are being booked at big festivals and being featured in CMT specials.
Strangle how most men, even famous ones, get through life without being accused of rape, let alone three times.
September 19, 2022 @ 5:19 pm
…..”Why Nelly and Diplo get passes, I cannot explain.”…..
I’ve explained it to you dozens of times. So I’ll repeat my question, with no condescension intended.
What would it take to get you to accept/ believe/ understand what is going on?
September 19, 2022 @ 7:35 pm
The most blind are always the ones who plunge knives into their eyes.
September 20, 2022 @ 10:55 am
What would it take, King Honky of Cartelshire, for you to ANSWER THE QUESTION I have posed to you multiple times, which is, SHOULD ALCOHOL BE BANNED?
September 19, 2022 @ 5:54 pm
I understand what you’re saying. But if you listen to Nelly and Diplos lyrics and it’s clear they have low moral standing and like to hang around low quality people. Be careful of the company you keep. Hanging around trashy people doing trashy things will only bring trash and trouble. Rap and the rap culture brings that’s behavior so it’s more to be expected and perhaps more excepted. Country music culture is usually seen as the exact opposite so it can be easier to be more harsh toward
September 19, 2022 @ 4:48 pm
I realize this comment is completely of topic but don’t where else to ask this. Have any of you ever come across this dude Colby Acuff. He came up on a playlist the other day and the music is pretty good. This is the first time that found an artist that I was digging and when I searched on this site it came up crickets. Trig, I can’t possibly imagine this hasn’t come up in your radar.
September 19, 2022 @ 5:08 pm

September 19, 2022 @ 7:21 pm
Yep, he has a few songs I really like. “If I were the Devil” is a great song.
September 19, 2022 @ 5:44 pm
With very much due respect, this has nothing to do with country music. This festival is not a country fest anymore at all. With the inclusion of these artists, it is a random festival like Lollapalooza and it should not be viewed as a country fest at all. This is not country news at all.
September 19, 2022 @ 10:34 pm
The only place they should be “booked” is the county jail
September 20, 2022 @ 5:56 am
Innocent until proven guilty mean anything to you?
September 20, 2022 @ 6:48 am
Nobody is advocating these two men get put in prison. I’m not even advocating that they don’t play this festival. As I said in the article, they have a right to work. I’m just curious as to why those advocating for the protection of women in the country music space are completely mum on this issue, while 200 articles have been written about how harmful Jason Aldean’s wife’s Instagram account is, for example. It seems to me that multiple accusations of rape should be a bigger concern than someone’s political beliefs.
September 20, 2022 @ 7:03 am
Alleged rape
September 20, 2022 @ 9:18 am
Trigger,
It is obvious why the double standard. Aldean’s wife has values that the vast majority of the country music media disagree with. Political beliefs and virtue signaling trump everything now.
In their eyes, her beliefs are more dangerous than potential rapists. It is twisted but they are too committed to back out now.

Simon,
I agree with you but why use for a moniker the name of an American traitor?
September 20, 2022 @ 10:08 am
I use historical names, obscure historical names, to maybe spur that one out of 100 curious people to go investigate and learn something. Obviously you’re not one amongst the clueless!
There is some debate about Girty and his intentions fwiw but I lean towards him not being a very good guy.
September 21, 2022 @ 4:26 pm
Awesome stuff.
I am not among the clueless of society. It is our job to educate those that are.
September 20, 2022 @ 6:56 am
By all means get those two creepers off that show. If Country music wishes to adhere to being a family-oriented genre (though sometimes I wonder),it’ll boot Nelly and Diplo,or face the charge that women don’t matter.
September 21, 2022 @ 1:56 pm
Trigger are you going to post a follow up that Diplo was just awarded 1.2 Mil and the judge ruled against the “victim”? We have to be willing to call balls and strikes here. You and the medias witchhunt against Morgan, when what he did did NOT warrant being canceled or not being played on country radio, yet you went along with the media on that. Bobby Bones in the days after had this whole silly thing where he said this is so grave and awful, we aint playing his music anymore. Its like…huh? Cause he said something in a drunken rant? You dont think the other artists in the rotation at the radio station also have done similar or WORSE things and they arent being canceled? I think maybe, less moralizing and soapboxing and more just presenting the music we all want to here is in order, Trigger! Beyond that youve had a grudge against Jason for years, evidently because he and his wife cheated on their spouses at the time. Are you also digging into the marriage and affairs and whatnot of all other country artists, cause I’d hazard a guess Jason isnt the only country star to cheat. Just saying…
September 21, 2022 @ 2:13 pm
You’re kind of all over the place here.
So first off, thanks for the heads up on the Diplo case. This is just one small portion of the accusations against him dealing with a restraining order and one alleged victim, but it is an important update. It happened today, so obviously that is why it was not referenced in this article.
Second, to lump me in with the rest of the media trying to “cancel” Morgan Wallen is a little ridiculous. I’ve said from the beginning that what he said was wrong and that he deserved whatever consequences were coming to him. But I also wrote numerous articles about how his attempted cancellation was wrong, specifically called out Rolling Stone, Buzzfeed, and other media outlets for posting falsehoods about his apologies and donations, and took a ration of shit for “defending” Morgan Wallen in the process.
As far as Jason Aldean, I haven’t even really broached that subject as of late yet. So please don’t assume my take on it.
Not sure where you’re going with Bobby Bones.
I agree there are probably country artists that have done worse behind the scenes, and if/when I hear about it, I will report on it. But my job here at Saving Country Music is not just “presenting the music we all want to here (sic).” I started this website to be a watchdog of the industry, the media, and to chronicle how country music is covered. If it doesn’t appeal to you, then read the features I’ve posted on Adam Hood, Hank3, and Colter Wall after this article as opposed to complaining about this one. I offer a ton of content here, and for free. And music is always the focus.
September 21, 2022 @ 2:41 pm
Appreciate this, Trigger! Thoughtful, and I agree with alot of it. I plan on checking those artists about Adam Hood, Colter and Hank III, that sounds right up my alley. As far as the Bobby Bones thing, I was just sort of lashing out at the way in the immediate days after the Morgan scandal broke, that us fans of his music, we sort of shamed and told we weren’t supposed to be listeners of his anymore, or that we by extension held offensive beliefs. You didnt say that, but there were folks who did, and the Bones thing was just that, how many other artists on rotation in Feb 2021 on Country Radio did equal or worse things than Morgan, and Bones wasnt going to mention that or take them off the air. Not playing an artists especially Morgan in 2021, was unprecedented, and in my view utterly moronic. For better or worse, Morgan is the most successful country artist of his generation, he is the face of the genre along with Luke Combs. Nothing he did warranted being taken off radio like that. And Im glad in the year and a half later, he’s as big if not bigger than he was then, and Dangerous is the most successful country album of our generation. Even Grady, who is an amazing person, had a 20 minute video, wading into the whole thing, since he interviewed the guy prior to Dangerous coming out, and was a part in spreading the word about him. I just felt, and still feel, I shouldn’t nor should anyone be shamed for liking his music, unapologetically. And I feel like he got the raw end of the deal, we all know Dangerous was winning every award that year and he’d be entertainer of the year. Its just facts. Glad he’s winning awards now though. To me, I think the punishment he received was way over the top, and is more a result of woke country being the norm, than people being hurt or outraged about his words. Were his actions offensive? Sure, but should he have been banned from radio as a result of it and called a KKK member and shit like that? We as a society need to pull back from the woke SJW nonsense overall, and it damn sure shouldn’t be included in the Nashville Scene. John Rich has a great Prager U video just posted talking about how woke has infected Nashville, and he’s spot on. I feel like we now view off color remarks as akin to murder or rape. Thats not the society I want to live in.
September 21, 2022 @ 2:50 pm
I agree. We can’t just assume anyone who listens to Morgan Wallen’s music is a racist. Really what you have here is a lot of people in the media who are afraid of being called racist themselves, and so they overcompensate in situations like this. What I was trying to illustrate with this story is that if we’re going to hold Morgan Wallen to account for words, we should also hold Nelly and Diplo to account for (alleged) actions.
September 22, 2022 @ 4:56 pm
The comment section for almost every single article on this website has turned into a complete shit show. People can’t seem to keep their political beliefs out of their comments and it really ruins it for everyone. I LOVE classic country music and am interested in learning more about THE MUSIC. I don’t come here to hear political debates. I’m really not sure if I want to keep reading these articles. I know if I get down to the comment section some blowhard is going to be ranting about unrelated politics. Thanks Trigger for all the hard work you do and your excellent articles, but the comment section is making me want to leave.
September 22, 2022 @ 7:17 pm
I appreciate the feedback Jason, and I agree. I am going to start shutting comment sections down entirely henceforth as soon as the comments get out-of-hand. I’ve done this twice this week. My approach has always been to let the discussion be as open as possible, but the same individuals continue to exploit this, despite my pleadings.
All that said those, please understand that the comment sections are optional. There’s nothing wrong with just reading the article and moving on. That’s probably how the majority of people interface with Saving Country Music.
Also, though it may seem like it is only a problem here, this is happening all across the internet. Political acrimony is at an all time high, and it’s spilling out in all kinds of sectors. The comments section here is just one of many places.
Thanks for reading.
September 22, 2022 @ 8:12 pm
Thanks Trig! I do appreciate your philosophy of keeping the comments open… It’s really tough these days to have any kind of discussion online without it turning into a political debate. I’m going to keep reading what you write, I think you’re doing a kick-ass job.
I fell in love with old country music a few years ago and it’s been so fun to learn the history of the genre and all the amazing, talented artists that built it. I mostly enjoy the form by collecting records and listening to them at home with my family. I’m a bit of a George Jones freak – So far, I have 72 of his records!
