Elizabeth Cook Cancels Shows to Deal With Personal Matters
Outlaw queen, regular Grand Ole Opry last-minute stand-in, SiriusXM DJ, and general badass Elizabeth Cook has decided to take some time off to deal with personal matters.
After performing at the El Cosmico Trans-Pecos Festival in Marfa, TX over the weekend, Cook was clearly not feeling herself. Through Twitter she solicited to her fan base on Saturday (9-27), “This is a stretch but do I have any fans near Midland/Odessa with a private jet? I will sing dance and tell jokes all the way to Nashville.”
There was no word on what, if any, the issue was, but Elizabeth subsequently canceled her appearance in Waycross, GA on the 27th where she was set to appear at the annual Gram Parsons Guitar Pull & Tribute Festival. “So deeply sorry Tim, Waycross is cancelled,” Cook tweeted out to one of her followers. “I have to go away soon for treatment. More as I know it. So sorry.”
Then later on the 27th, Elizabeth Cook posted to her followers on Facebook,
Hey Beautiful Outlaw People, I am sorry I am not making Waycross show tonite. Get a map consider where Marfa TX and Waycross GA. Consider airport access. Consider that my health is pretty fragile right now and we just couldn’t make it happen. Deepest apologies to those who traveled far and made special plans. Been doing this a while and I don’t often cancel shows. I hate doing it. More later on my condition and whats going on. I love yall and appreciate you in this difficult time.
This left many concerned that Elizabeth may be suffering from a serious health issue. It was revealed today that the country star appears to be suffering from severe exhaustion. On Monday (9-29), Elizabeth Cook’s manager David Macias posted,
After coming off a stretch of Elizabeth losing both parents, recently going through a divorce, touring constantly and doing her radio show every day, the pressure of keeping up with everything has left her feeling beyond burnt out. Although it’s not in her nature to want to do so, she is reluctantly agreeing to hit the pause button and recalibrate in order to deal with the pressures of all that she does in the healthiest way possible. She’ll not be on this next run with Todd Snider, but she’ll be on his next tour (check back for specifics). She’ll be back on the radio and back on the road in short order. We thank you for your understanding and support.
Elizabeth Cook was married to fellow performer Tim Carroll before divorcing recently. The 42-year-old singer originally from Wildwood, FL released her first album independently in 2000 before being picked up by Warner Bros. in 2002 to release Hey Y’all. She has released five full-length albums overall, with her last project being 2012’s Gospel Plow—an EP of Gospel music. Elizabeth’s SiriusXM radio show “Apron Strings” airs weekdays on Outlaw Ch. 60.
Elizabeth is also a semi-regular on Letterman, and recently performed this song in dedication to him after he announced his upcoming retirement.

Here’s hoping that she recovers to full health as soon as possible!
As I have said before, an artists’ personal well-being and happiness is immeasurably more important than his or her output.

Tim Carroll is a fantastic rock guitar player!!! I saw him perform at 12th & Porter in 1997 and was blown away by his talent and writing. Once he got with her (Elizabeth) he became her guitar bitch playing all this Dolly Parton esk, bluegrass, country crap that every song sounds the same.
I’m sure he got tired of always being behind her. Now I’m glad he’s away from that and hopefully will bring back some of his great talent… if he hasn’t lost it after all these years of playing this crap… “Hey Yall!”

What?!? Dolly is Dolly and Elizabeth is Elizabeth. You need to do a little more research before you make judgement calls like you did back in January. Dolly was/is special; so is Elizabeth. I had to say something on behalf of Ms. Cook. She deserves more than a brief remark like that. Check out her outlaw country and hard jammin’….Dolly can’t do that!

I can’t say that I have ever heard of her, but she is beautiful and I wish her well. Any one of those things is enough to cause stress, all combined are spirit breaking.

It’s a shame that the most creative among us many times seem to be the most troubled. Back in the day, we didn’t have the same understanding of things like addiction and mental illness as we do today. And still we lose too many of our finest artists too early. Luckily for many artists who have found mainstream success, they have the resources to create a support network around them to make sure they don’t fall. In independent music, all many artists have is their friends and fans. I feel fortunate to be able to write this story and talk about Elizabeth Cook’s “personal matters” in the context of her canceling a few shows, as opposed to writing a story about her collapse on stage, or about being found by paramedics in a hotel room. These artists have given their very souls to us as listeners, and in moments like this it is the least we can do to rise up and let them know they are not alone in their struggles, whatever they may be, that they are loved and appreciated and worthy. Elizabeth Cook is a very tough woman, and if she says she needs a break, that’s all I need to know. And all that she needs to know from us is that we stand beside her, and will be excited to see her when she is ready to return.
My two cents.

Well said, Trig. I’ll say this: I stood by the Dixie Chicks, and I’ll stand by Elizabeth Cook. Indeed, she’s an artist.

I’ve been a fan since the Balls album and have seen her live three times, all with her soon to be ex-husband Tim Carroll backing her on lead guitar. I’m a fan of his music as well. I was saddened to hear that she and Tim were divorcing. I hope that she gets the rest and support that she needs. I look forward to the next time she comes through the DC area, whenever that may be.

I’ve followed Elizabeth Cook since her first (label-supported) studio album, Hey, Y’all, which I consider her finest album. It is fresh and fun, a pure joy from beginning to end. And she is easily the most charming person in country music today. I hope she gets the rest and focus that she needs.

I hope she takes the time to take care of herself. I was listening to her on Apron Strings a couple weeks ago and thought that she didn’t sound quite like herself. She’s a sweetie pie and a kick-ass singer. Get well soon, Lizzie. We’ll leave a light on for you.

Her comment about faith and drugs on Sunday morning Sept. 21 Americana Fest in Nashville tipped us off. Now I’ll miss her tomorrow in Green Bay. Her songs have given us a fascinating take on the traditional Sat. nite/Sun. morning balance theme. Now she needs some more Sunday morning.

From having booking her for a festival to seeing many of her shows. Perhaps the classist act in the business. She really interacts with her fan base and is a true gem to be around. Hopefully she will get through this soon and be back to making music and touring again.

What’s up beautiful, outlaw person? You were my first outlaw dj and I’m with you five days a week. Miss hearing your first greeting of the morning; look forward to hearing it whether it is peppy or under the weather. Girl, you’ve been through a lot and as humans we all need processing, affirmation and pulling together time. Sending you spiritual vibes that I hope will rejuvenate and invigorate along with the warmest of outlaw hugs. Hang in there girl we love you and are on your side.

OMG Thank the Lord Elizabeth is alright because I know she will be. When she dissappeared from OC and I could not get any info on where she went, I feared the worst and started sobbing and now have tears of joy & relief. Elizabeth you ride with me every day in this big ole truck. I always thought how can she do so much???? Elizabeth get all the rest you need and eat lots of berries & good healthy stuff & drink plenty of Fiji bottled water. All of us are going to LOVE you more when you return. OH yeah if OC does not start playing more of your music, I will find Mojo and make him eat elephant boogers!!!

Dear Elizabeth,
We have been your followers for some time also. We are so sorry to hear that you have had a rough time lately. You are a smart woman to take time off. Please continue to nurture yourself and spoil yourself by doing the healthy little things that you know will help you to heal. Take a walk in the woods if that will help. Try something new if that will help. You know what you need. Whatever it is that will help you to heal, please do it. Lots of love, Susan and Bob
