“Expect The Unexpected” From Upcoming Cody Jinks Release
Information is still scant to come by, and it is still very early in the process, but the word has come down to Saving Country Music headquarters for fans of surging independent country star Cody Jinks to “expect the unexpected” when it comes to how Texas native’s new album will be released. What exactly that means we’ll have to wait and see, but we already know there will be some changes compared to his previous records.
First, at the moment Cody Jinks is planning to release the new album with no record label at all. After releasing his first few records on his own, and receiving widespread critical acclaim and posting surprising numbers for his 2015 record Adobe Sessions, Jinks signed a deal with Thirty Tigers to release 2016’s I’m Not The Devil. The record became Cody’s breakout smash, selling over 70,000 copies at last count and racking up huge streaming numbers. This led to Cody Jinks signing with Rounder Records to release 2018’s Lifers. Now Jinks has reportedly decided to bring it all back in house for the new album.
And don’t worry, “expect the unexpected” may not apply to the music necessarily. There are assurances it will definitely be a country record, but Cody Jinks and his team may take a unique approach in how the music gets to people. We’ll just have to see.
In late April, Cody Jinks shared numerous photos from the studio as he worked his way through recording new music, including a new song with the working title, “Tell ‘Em What It’s Like.” Once again Cody Jinks has chosen the Sonic Ranch complex out in West Texas near El Paso to record the new album. It is the same place Cody recorded Adobe Sessions, and the title is an homage to the secluded recording spot. Cody’s I’m Not The Devil and Lifers were recorded there as well. Frequent tour mate Whitey Morgan also regularly records out there, and named one of his previous records Sonic Ranch.
No information on a possible new title for the new Cody Jinks album or any more detailed information, but it is tentatively scheduled to be released October 4th. More information when it becomes available.

Hopefully he won’t drop the ball again with this new record, now that some of the pressure and limelight are off of him.

Lifers is an iconic album for anybody not named Cody Jinks. It’s a solid to good album for Cody Jinks. I’m excited he’s moving forward already.

Agreed. He’s set the bar so high that it’s hard to get over it, no matter how good he does.

Has he been playing any new songs on the road recently?

Saw him in Charlotte earlier this month. I don’t think he did any new songs but he did an excellent cover of Chasin’ that Neon Rainbow.

I wonder what the angle is here of dropping the album independently. Maybe he will make more money that way considering how big his fanbase is? Interesting decision.

I think the angle is “I own it. Its mine. I made it how I wanted to make it, and I owe no one anything.” as it has been for every record he put out from Adobe and prior.
Knowing how Jinks is, I don think there is an angle apart from that.

Well yeah, I don’t think he’s changing who he is or anything. And the labels he worked with let him keep creative control. I’m just wondering if there’s more monetary benefit releasing it independently or something. I would think that having label power behind you would be really helpful, so that’s what I’m wondering about.

Many bag on Lifers but it’s still my rotation and I still love it! I’ve got 5th row center for Milwaukee’s Thursday night show and I’m looking forward to it just as much as the Madison show a few weeks ago. Today I get an email saying he just added a 3rd Franklin,Ohio show “due to the demand”. I guess there’s no demand for him here in my tiny bumblefuck town of Chicago? Could’ve played here Wednesday on his way up? Maybe nobody’s offering a good enough gig here. 🙁 No worries……….I’m Milwaukee bound!!! I’ll report on any new tune debuts……..

Yep I saw it and the Wisconsin Dells show too. I’ll be at the Concord. I figure tonight is once in a lifetime chance to see him this close. Well worth the hour and a half drive.

Great show last night. Ward Davis brought Cody out during his set and sang Andrew Gold’s Golden Girl theme song “Thank You for Being a Friend” to him.
They finished it together….lol Hilarious!! Ward came out during Cody’s to duet I’m Not The Devil. A little different set than Madison a few weeks ago but no new songs although Ward said he’s heard “the stuff” and it’s killer.

Headline had me worried! I though maybe he was gonna put out some shitty prog-rock album and then go around all mad that everyone doesn’t pay attention to him every second…like some other worship-ees around here…

Hate to say this as they’re great and friends but it’s a fucking travesty Whitey Morgan doesn’t get the recognition and love Cody jinks now has gotten with the public
Whitey is the baddest of the bad and honestly; in my opinion, better.
Love Cody but amazes me how Whitey doesn’t get the same love

Agree. How “What Am I Supposed To Do?” from his last album should be on every country radio station across America.

Let me just say this because I love both men’s music. I think Cody delivers a greater variety of types of songs as well as being more prolific in his output than Whitey to garner a larger following. I watched him tear it up to a large loving crowd in Madison, WI like a headliner should. That being said………..Whitey has played here (in my bumblefuck area of Illinois(Chicago area)) 4 or 5 times (to small crowds mind you) that I’ve seen in the last 3 years to Cody’s N O N E. Song for song as well as variety of tempos etc…. Cody wins running away in my opinion. Whitey can get there but I don’t think he really cares to. He seems to be happy touring shot and beer joints to 2-400 peeps as well as the occasional fest spots. This is a business, you have to WANT TO get to the next level and yes sometimes…….dare I say it on here…compromise….. If you don’t that’s fine. There’s nobody that loves seeing Whitey at the bar up the street from my house more than me. NOBODY…and I’ll always be there to support him.

Whitey just announced he’s coming to my home bar the 1800 capacity crown jewel that is Joe’s Live in August. The man just keeps working hard and coming here often. Of course he will be welcomed with open arms and fanfare!

I have been to 2 concerts of CODY JINKS and the first one he had THE STEEL WOODS playing with him and it was an awesome show.. got to go down stairs and had a meet and greet with CODY. And he was very humble and funny… SUNNY SWEENEY opened the show and was GREAT….

With a now well established fan base, there’s really no reason for Jinks to work with a label. He can successfully self-release and retain full song rights and a majority share of the profits. He was smart to use established labels for a couple albums, leaving the promotional work to a team with the necessary connections. But he’s in a good, and very enviable, place now to do it on his own going forward.
