Five Randy Travis Singles Receive New Gold & Platinum Certs

It’s no coincidence that you continue to see the name of Randy Travis come up in headlines, despite the fact that he’s incapable at the moment from performing or recording new music. It’s because behind-the-scenes, there is a concerted effort to keep his legacy alive and square away his affairs after the questionable management of his ex-wife Lib Hatcher, and Randy’s obvious health issues.

This was recently evidenced by the RIAA certifying multiple well-recognized Randy Travis singles with deserved Gold and Platinum certifications. Though the Christian label Word had worked to certify Randy’s Gospel records Rise & Shine and Worship & Faith Gold in 2003 and 2006 respectively, it had been since 1997—or 25 years—since Warner Bros. had done a proper accounting on Randy’s catalog, and made sure his Gold and Platinum Certifications were current.

Now Randy Travis has received five new RIAA Certifications for some of his most important songs (see below).

Along with getting these certifications done, there have also expanded editions of some Randy Travis classic albums released recently. In 2021, Randy Travis released expanded editions of his debut album Storms of Life, and his holiday album An Old Time Christmas with previously-unheard bonus tracks. Don’t be surprised if we see more of these type of releases in the coming years.

2X Certified Platinum – “Forever and Ever, Amen” – Written by Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz, it’s arguably Randy’s signature song. After being released in 1997, it won a Grammy, both the CMA and ACM for Song of the Year, spent 3 weeks at #1, which was the first single to do that at the time in country in seven years, and became Randy’s first ever single to be Certified Gold.

Certified Platinum – “Deeper Than The Holler” – Another signature song for Randy Travis (and also written by Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz), it became Randy’s eighth #1 single in January of 1989, and his sixth consecutive #1. It’s from his 1988 album 8X10.

Certified Gold – “On The Other Hand” – Randy’s first ever single, it was originally released in early 1985, but initially flopped with not much promotion behind it. But when the second Randy Travis single “1982” went to #6 in the charts, “On The Other Hand” was given a second shot, and ended up becoming Randy’s first #1 single, and rocketed him into stardom.

Certified Gold – “Diggin’ Up Bones” – Also from Randy’s debut album Storms of Life, the song written by Paul Overstreet, Nat Stuckey, and Al Gore (no, not the Vice President) became Randy’s second #1 single.

Certified Gold – “I Told You So” – A #1 song for Randy Travis that he wrote himself, this song would become an important fulcrum in Randy’s career. Carrie Underwood would later record it as a duet with Randy, and it would become a hit again in 2009, putting Randy Travis back in the charts.
