Garth Brooks Wants to Make 5 (Yes, 5!) More Chris Gaines Albums

If the first iteration of Chris Gaines wasn’t controversial enough, get ready for five (yes, five!) more Chris Gaines albums to complete the universe of the Garth Brooks sex-addicted emo pop star alter ego.

In 1999, a bored Garth Brooks growing tired of dominating country music recorded and released the album Garth Brooks in … the Life of Chris Gaines, promoting it with a VH1 Behind The Music mockumentary and Saturday Night Live appearance. There was also supposed to be a Chris Gaines movie, but when the backlash against the project grew, Garth Brooks scrapped it. Depending on who you speak to, Chris Gaines is one of the most intriguing side projects in music history, or one of country’s most embarrassing moments.

The Life of Chris Gaines still went 2X Platinum even with the criticism, and had a Gold Certified single in “Lost in You.” Those well-versed in the Chris Gaines universe know that despite being a one-off album, The Life of Chris Gaines was actually supposed to be a “Greatest Hits” package from the Chris Gaines career, pulling from five separate hypothetical albums. Well lo and behold, Garth Brooks intends to record and release those five Chris Gaines albums, at least at some point.

Speaking to Billboard as part of a CMA Fest event, Garth told them when they asked if there will be more Chris Gaines albums in the future, “Yeah, there’s five of them. The five albums have to come out.”

Yes, five. Though it sounds like Chris Gaines fans shouldn’t hold their breath for that to happen any time soon.

I don’t know if it’s just because I’m 114, but now everything takes three hours more than it took time to do before,” said Garth. “Business-wise I’ll say I’ve never been this busy before in my life, and I’m not as in the eye of the public as I was. So I think what it’s telling me as an older artist, you have to work a lot, lot, lot—not work, put in more time—to get the same results.

The Gaines project was a lot of time put in because it’s not natural,” Garth continues. “You’re acting on record. But I want to do it just simply for the people who love the Gaines project. Selfishly, I love the Chris Gaines record, so I want to do it for me. It challenged me as a vocalist. So I don’t know when we’re going to get to it, but it’s on the list.”

New Chris Gaines music isn’t all Garth Brooks is working on. He’s been hinting for a while that he has a duets album with wife Trisha Yearwood, and he also said during the Billboard interview that he has another duets album on the way featuring other artists that will include old and new songs.
