Gary Allan The Latest to Have Next Album Stuck in Delays After Bad Single
When the dust settles on 2015 and we look back upon it in future years, we might be looking at the year country music was paralyzed by an identity crisis like never before. It’s hard to remember another time when so many artists tried to completely change the direction of their sound, many with very mixed results, and so many promised albums got pushed back because of deflating lead singles. Call it the Sam Hunt effect—where the success of country music’s most non-country star in history had everyone thinking they needed to be R&B to stay relevant.
Gary Allan may be the poster boy for this trend. One of the few bright spots in mainstream country for so many years (though he’d throw an unfortunate single out there upon occasion), when he released his latest single in March called “Hangover Tonight,” some wondered if the hard-edged 47-year-old had lost his mind. This wasn’t the Gary Allan we all knew, all dressing in crushed velvet suits and doing his best Bruno Mars impression. That makeover may work for Thomas Rhett or Brett Eldredge. But Gary Allan?
Gary looked awkward trying to run with the young dogs, and the ruse ultimately failed, if it ever even got off the runway. “Hangover Tonight” couldn’t crack the Top 40 on country radio, and came in at an embarrassing #49 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. So much for staying relevant, “Hangover Tonight” arguably ushered in Gary Allan’s 2015 disappearance.
READ: Gary Allan Finds His Big Sellout Moment with “Hangover Tonight”
Now Gary Allan fans and curious onlookers are wondering where the new album is that we were promised when the single was first released in the spring.
“Hopefully at the end of the summer,” is what Gary told a reporter during CMA Fan Fest in early June about the new album. “I turned it in like two months ago. I did my work. All they have to do is give it to you.” Another feature from March in Rolling Stone said the new album would be out “later this year [2015].” Here a few days before Turkey Day, clearly that’s not going to happen.
Then in October, Allan alluded to AZ Central that the hold up was from the label trying to decide what direction to go with a new single. “I turned it in and they’re trying to decide which single to add next, ‘cause there are a few directions on there. The album is kind of all over the place. There’s two more to go that I wrote that are kind of this Motown vibe, kind of funky. And there’s the real traditional stuff that I’ve done. I think my favorite stuff, there’s a song on there called “Mess Me Up” that I really love and a song on there called “High as I’ve Ever Been” and a song called “Drinkin’ About You.” So I don’t know which way they’ll go.”
Apparently Gary’s label MCA Nashville doesn’t know either—the same label behind another much-delayed album from Josh Turner. Gary wrote “Hangover, Tonight” with Chris Stapleton, Jesse Frasure, and Cary Barlowe, and the other two R&B selections from the album were written by this same crew. Even more interesting is that Gary Allan is already talking about the album after this current one stuck in delay. Gary is promising it’s going to be more traditional in nature.
“Every time I finish with a record, I can’t wait for the world to hear it, and that’s kind of where I’m at right now,” Gary told News OK in September. “But I do feel like it’s gonna drag a little bit more back towards traditional. I feel like my writing right now forward for the next album after this one, I feel like it’ll be geared more towards Waylon and Willie and then after that towards new people that I write with.”
He also said in the interview, “You don’t wanna follow the trend. You wanna do something different that everybody reacts to, because that’s kind of a habit of Nashville: If something hits big like Florida Georgia Line, then they all go out and try to find the next Florida Georgia Line. It’s just whatever’s selling they chase, and I think that’s always a mistake to try to do what other people did. I always try to stay out in the front so that they’re trying to do what you did.”
But of course, that’s exactly what Gary did with “Hangover Tonight.” And now that the album has been delayed, he’s even more behind the trend.
MCA Nashville has already announced they will be releasing Vince Gill’s new album Down To My Last Bad Habit on February 12th, 2016. So in all likelihood it will be at least after mid February before we could consider seeing the new albums from Gary Allan or Josh Turner. Perhaps the good news for fans of these artists is the delays might result in some retooling and rethinking about the direction of music. Since trying to chase Sam Hunt has failed for so many artists in 2015, perhaps sticking to what you do best is a better option.

Gary Allan is another victim of no cd release and Josh Turner was the first victim. Jake Owen and Eli Young Band are other victims too after each release their bad single. What do you think about “Honey I’m good” Toby Keith, George Strait took a year to release their cd’s after their first singles failed to make top 20.

That’s ridiculous. Sure the lead single was awful and I don’t expect the album to be the greatest ever, but I’m sure there are 3-4 good songs on it at least. Gary Allan is pretty solid usually and while “Every Storm” wasn’t a favorite of mine, his last album had a number of stellar album cuts.

I didn’t care for “Hangover tonight” that was his weakest single of his career. #41 on country airplay chart(#49 on the country songs chart) his first single that missed the top 40 since 1998 “I’ll take today. I hope his next single be successful.

As someone who considers Gary one of my favorites, I have to say this article hits the nail on the head. I didn’t mind “Hangover Tonight” as much as some, but it was definitely an atrocity as far as Gary standards are concerned. I don’t remember where, but I thought I heard they had decided on “Mess Me Up” as the next single. It’s not traditional, but it’s classic moody rocking Gary.
But yeah HT was a huge mistake. These days if you have even one flop single, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be back (especially at his age). I still hope they can get Gary’s (and Josh’s) album out before too long.

I didn’t think Hangover Tonight was bad, better than Thomas Rhett and Brett Eldredge’s songs. But it’s not country, and shouldn’t be on country radio. And his normal stuff is 10x better.

The difference between Josh Turner and Gary Allan: Gary sold out. Josh didn’t. I have less sympathy for that reason.
Mike W.
November 24, 2015 @ 1:09 pm
Perhaps, but let’s all remember that Josh Turner was going pretty heavy in the neo-traditional route and singing a bunch of happy, upbeat love songs when those were the rage way back.
Josh Turner may not have “sold out” in the sense he dramatically changed his sound, but the fact remains that the majority of the stuff he has recorded has been pretty “meh” lyrically.

Yes the song was a mistake and I was honestly wondering who convinced the same guy who seemed to have his own identity through all the country music mess of the past 8-10 years to cut such a song. If it wasn’t such a jolt, it’d probably had gone more unnoticed than it has. Turns out maybe Gary Allan doesn’t know who he is as an artist after all if he’s chasing this younger market.

I saw this guy more times than Garth in terms of concert appearances, but earlier this spring I heard he’d was gonna make a return trip to the Hard Rock in Biloxi and for the first time in my life, I refused to even consider buying tickets because one, I was getting ready to leave for Atlanta and two, something told me he was gonna play that song over there and I’ve not heard it yet and I refuse to even listen to a clip.
I’ll also say this, I hope he cuts that song out of his set list next time I see him and if he don’t, I’m cutting off from his fanbase and I’ll even delete his albums from my computer because that’s how pissed off I am at him.

I’m with Logan on this one. Do you have Alabama’s music on your computer? They gave you reason to delete all of their music long before “Southern Drawl” even assaulted our ears. Nearly every legitimate artist makes an attempt to do something like Hangover Tonight in their careers. Thankfully, a lot of them fail.

Good for you. Its not as if Gary Allan is such a great artist, or had such great older material, that cutting ties with him would be that difficult. He was decent in his time. Now, he has sold out, and the best route is to just forget about him and move on. I won’t erase the Gary Allan albums I have on my ePod, but I sure as hell won’t be buying anything he puts out from now on… Once an artist brings a rapper up on stage, collaborates with a rap “artist,” or releases a song or album that has that crap, hip hop, EMP, etc. or other bullshit audio noise on it, they are dead to me…

November 25, 2015 @ 8:37 am
So if the one of the albums Gary Allan does in the next couple years wins album of the year from Saving Country Music or another reputable source you will refuse to listen to it?
That seems overly harsh if you ask me and you run the risk of missing out on some great music. Look, I can’t stand Jake Owen and the majority of the crap he cuts, but I can admit that “What We Ain’t Got” is a damn, damn fine Country song. Same goes for Zac Brown Band which is perhaps the ultimate sell out in Country music right now, but I can admit that “Bittersweet” or “Dress Blues” are damn fine songs.
I can appreciate your commitment to wanting Country music to sound like Country music and while I hate rap, EDM, etc. etc. especially in Country music, but judging artists on radio singles alone is tough to do these days IMO. Yeah, pretty much everything at Country radio sucks now, but every now and then a couple good songs will slip through the cracks and make it on albums.

If a greater artist did something like this, I might be willing to give him another chance, but, to me, Gary Allan is nothing special. I never waited with bated breath for his next release and I won’t miss him. Same thing with Zac Brown. My wife liked a few of his songs, so I have a couple of his albums, but I won’t miss him either. If, God-forbid, Jason Boland, Corb Lund, Chris Knight, etc. did something like this, I would probably overlook it and continue to look forward to their subsequent releases, but Gary Allan and Zac Brown are on the fringes of what I care to listen to anyway. So, for me, they won’t be missed.

I enjoy “Hangover Tonight” but its about as country as Old Dominion. Hangover Tonight is a bizarre song, I don’t know what genre that it sounds like, I’d say it leans hardcore towards adult contemporary but you also get an R&B and country vibe from it. Best would be described as the Metro-Bro country as Trigger said earlier this year. Its a clusterfuck of different genres, which can be good, but they are doing it all wrong with this Metro-Bro shit.
Gary Allan, Josh Turner, Jake Owen, Eric Paslay, Scotty McCreery, Jerrod Niemann, and Eli Young Band may all have ended their careers by trying to sell out and follow these pop country douches who started their careers with pop country. Gary Allan was always more neo-traditional, as was Josh Turner. While Jake Owen, Jerrod Niemann, Eric Paslay, and Scotty McCreery were playing real modern country music, the way country music should have evolved and stayed that way. But, all of them had to choose terrible singles and ruin their careers. I really wonder what they, as well as their labels, were thinking.
Hangover Tonight is NOT a bad song, but its a terrible single choice. Reminds me of Miranda Lambert’s Smokin And Drinkin….another decent song but terrible single choice. Josh Turner’s “Lay Low” was a GREAT single choice, but he is too country for country radio and I find it shocking he made it to #29 with that song. Jerrod Niemann officially ended his career with “Donkey”. “Buzz Back Girl” and “Blue Bandana” are also decent songs, but i think country radio couldn’t take him seriously after “Donkey”. Reminds me of Toby Keith with “Red Solo Cup”….the last high peaking single that anyone can ever remember from him, radio hasnt taken him seriously since. Jake Owen’s “Real Life” is a decent song, but it is NOT country music and was a total sell out moment, terrible single choice. There has not been a hide or hair of word about Jake’s next single or album, his label is probably pissed it only did #17.

You mentioned other career enders, but not this one: Sadly, I think Jake Owen ended his career w/ Beachin’. Nothin before that by him was so awful as to make me write him off. Beachin’ was just plain awful, big hit or not.
Summer Jam
November 26, 2015 @ 1:48 pm
Absolutely. I’m a career-long Jake Owen fan and to say the least, I thought the Days Of Gold album was medicore and very disappointing when we all know Jake is capable of so much more. Beachin is one of his worst (if not his worst) songs, but of course country radio caters to garbage songs like that. I miss the Startin With Me and Somethin About A Woman days…wish Jake would go back to that….but hey, a man can dream…right?!

Most his previous releases could be enjoyed all the way through. The only songs I really liked was the title track and what we ain’t got, the rest of the album ranged from pedestrian and forgettable to awful. I am really hoping that he, along with Eli Young, wake up and realize that chasing trends may yield short term benefits (although it appears not so much in these cases) but won’t build a long term career.

I’m a huge Gary Allan fan. I have all his albums and have seen him twice in Richmond. I hate to say it but I knew this “change in direction” was coming after “every storm runs outta rain” was released. Despite it being a #1 hit I didn’t like the song nor its follow up “pieces”. The last album had some great moments but then there were songs like ” good as new” “no worries” and “drop” that were a drop in quality then stuff Gary usually recorded. “Hangover tonight” is the worst Gary Allan single to date in my opinion and leaves me cautious about buying the album when it comes out. I hope I’m wrong.

I saw him live a little while back and he played “Hangover Tonight” and a few other news songs that are suppose to be on this album. I haven’t heard the song, but careers do have a “sell by” date they are not eternal, especially at radio. Never thought I’d see the day that my beloved George and Reba were discarded, but radio did that, too.
That was when I stopped listening to “country” radio, Miaranda is no replacement for Reba.

I think people should consider for a moment that the same label that wants to delay the album release is the same label that heavily pushed for this sound on the new single. They tried to change what wasn’t broken. the man has been doing this for 20 years and has done just fine. They also heavily promoted the single to start with, then didn’t put out a video for 3 months, and now no follow up single? The other singles he mentioned in the article “Mess Me Up” and “High As I’ve Ever Been” would both be great options for a next single and have the Gary sound that everyone is looking for. In the case of “Hangover…” His label is his own worst enemy.

I agree that the label deserves to shoulder a lot of the blame here, but we don’t know how much say so Gary had in encouraging this direction, or wanting to go along with it. In the end, it’s him standing in the studio, singing these songs. Sometimes an artists has staunch principles until a label gives them an ultimatum, or they’re starring irrelevancy in the face. We know how Gary truly feels about this stuff when he flamethrowed Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood on Larry King a while back. But then he turned right back around and apologized profusely to country radio, not because he believed what he said was wrong, but because he didn’t want to cut the legs out from under his career. I guess what I’m getting at is we all know where Gary Allan’s heart is, but unlike some, he’s willing to turn a blind eye if it means further his career. In this case, he turned a blind eye, but it didn’t further his career anyway. Yes, the label also bears some responsibility, but at some point Gary has to stand up for himself and be his own man.

So many of the commenters here are quick to throw Gary under the proverbial bus; how disapointing.
If only we all knew fully how much his label is to blame for the disappointment of “Hangover Tonight” (making him re-record it multiple times and change it from how it originally sounded, plus forcing him to apologize for speaking the truth, as you mentioned Trigger), I would hope more of you would be more forgiving. But go ahead, disown him, each one who does is one less person I have to compete with to get a front row concert seat. Every concert I’ve been to this year has stoked my desire for this long-awaited new album from all the new songs I’ve heard him perform, and I could spit nails at the label suits who have screwed him and his fans over with these delays.
Just because so-called “country” radio may not play him anymore certainly doesn’t mean he is a has-been. I’d say given the state of “country” radio it’s a compliment.

He had some songs that I think are way better that didn’t even make the cut. Still love Gary but Hangover Tonight has never been a song I could get into. I am a huge fan of his but because he was true to himself. I hope the record labels get that we don’t want all music to fit the trend of the moment. I want music that speaks to me. I have had loss & pain in my life and Gary’s music has spoken to where I was at & helped me heal. Give me that over a preconceived idea of what sells to 16 – 23 year olds. God help music in general if it is all going to be cookie cutter stamped versions of the same format! OMG!! I can’t believe some of the comments I just read quickly judging Gary future albums that coming out in the future that they will have no interest in buying anymore albums from him. I am so disappointed in these comments and wants to stop being his fan over one album of his is different from all the rest. Well, Gary doesn’t have to worry about me I will continue keep buying any albums that Gary put out until he decides to retire from the music business and continue seeing Gary in concert and at his FCP. I love Gary with all my heart and soul and I love this man music and shows Gary got my full support I won’t turn my back on him. Some of his songs has been helping me get through some rough times lately with lot family passing away on my mothers side of family and that including my own parents passing so close together as well and it has been hitting my mother family pretty darn hard lately from 2011 to the present.I can’t deal with death to well especially when came to your own parents. I love every single song that Gary put outs he write about real things in life and it will continue in helping me get through other rough times as well. I hope that they will keep him out there for a very very very very longtime he is damn good artist to see in concert and make very very very very very awesome albums to hear about real life. I can’t wait for more of Gary future up coming albums and I really wanting them to release this album that they are delaying as soon as possible. I want hear the rest of his other songs from this album. I hear some of the new ones he has sing at his shows and at his FCP. But would love to hear the the rest of it. To the ones that wants to drop Gary as a hot potato cause of one album you won’t like well goodbye. Funny, I have been slowly going back over the past 6 months and downloading all of Gary Allan’s albums one at a time. I I had nothing by him until 6 months ago. I am bouncing around chronologically, and I can see his trend from purer old school country towards rock through his various releases. I have liked it all, a lot, thus far. Interestingly though, I have not heard Hangover Tonight, not even a snippet. The bad review on this site, coupled with my distaste for all these guys rushing to jump from bandwagon to bandwagon (looking at you, Jake Owen and Eli Young) makes me sadand as a result I steered clear. I am enjoying his older stuff, why create a bad taste with this one song. Hopefully it’s a one off mistake. . I like musicians with integrity. I am hoping that HT did so poorly it gets left off the releas altogether when it finally comes out.

There seems to be two strategies with videos. The first is to release it right with the single to help get people’s attention. The second is to wait until right near the peak of a single in its cycle, which usually happens two or three months after its released, to help push the single over the top. Of course if your single has already flopped by the time three months comes by, then the video feels like a waste.
In 2015, just like we’ve seen so many projects pushed back, we’ve also seen a ton of these DOA videos for singles that never even got off the runway. The simple fact is Music Row has no clue what to do right now, is scared of their own shadow, and only the topmost established stars are able to find any serious traction.

I don’t blame the record label it’s the radio: the reason why is that we have too many artist on the radio but they play the same songs over and over again every 2-3 hours. Billboard and mediabase charts is the blame because the some songs last like to 30-40 weeks on the charts which is ridiculous they should limit 20-23 weeks like back in the 80′ or 90’s and earlier. So certain artist can do better on the charts and release 3-4 singles per year not 1 or maybe 2 a year. I hope this make any sense to anyone.

Matt used to come up with a couple good songs but everything I’ve heard out of him the past five or six years is pretty laughable and lame… Not to mention sophomoric… Including every storm do you think herzberg s addiction to Warren is the problem? … Or are they slapping him down for his “lifestyle”?

No… The fact that he turns 48 today and is living with a 24 year old the same age as his daughter… The fact that he’s openly cheated on her for years… The fact that 15 and 16 year Olds have accused he and his buddies of statutory rape…. The fact that he’s spread stds to starstruck fans… That’s what I’m referring to

I do wonder what proof you have about that rubbish your saying, other then just bullshit you read on the internet ? Although hangover tonight isnt the best gary allan song I ever heard its not that bad . You all call yourself fans he brings out one song thats not the norm and you bag the shit out of him . Im glad he’s trying something a little more care free and not so much the ” I want to kill myself” stuff he normally brings out , besides he looks hot in that suite!

Really people I liked hangover tonight.. What about those other artist trying to put hip hop in there songs or some of the songs are so far from country its unreal. They have songs that definitely not country playing and some artist I haven’t heard of and still wondering how they got on cmt videos. All artist ate trying new I guess I am old fashion Ilike to know tthere is a short there and hangover tonight is different for Gary but I liked it. Damn Gary we could have a few drinks and see where it goes and that’s something I don’t do is drink to much and take them for a ride. But I see it happening a lot. Listen to the words people I see it happeningall the time and to put it in a song iI thought was damn good

I love Gary Allan, I saw him perform this single hangover tonight live in Dallas and it was so fantastic. Everyone was having the best time, great crowd and show. I love every song he has, they all have his soul backed up with every word. Can’t wait to hear what’s next for him and continue to enjoy the hell out of his music.

I love Gary Allan. I have seen him several times in concert. I also met him once. People who are saying nasty things about him need to stop. Unless you have proof of the crap you’re saying it needs to stop there is enough negativity in the world. Keep on doing what you do best Gary!!! I love you and you’re music!!!
