Hank Williams Jr. Is Out on Monday Night Football, Again
Welp, you win some, and you lose some. Just a few weeks after it was announced that Hank Williams Jr. would finally be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame a good decade or more after he should have already been, it was announced this week Bocephus has been booted once again out of his high-profile Monday Night Football theme song spot. But this time (luckily), politics are not directly involved.
Since most, if not all of the upcoming NFL season is likely to be played in stadiums with limited or no fans, and congregating in large groups is still discouraged due to COVID-19, having a bearded redneck rework a song about “having a party” and having “all your rowdy friends coming over tonight” is not really seen as cool. So ESPN has decided to give the song the ax. Perhaps some might construe that as political to some extent. But it’s also understandable.
There’s no reason to believe that when things return to normal, Hank Jr. won’t return to the Monday Night Football theme as well. But for the interim they have decided to tap “Rip It Up” performed by the band Butcher Brown. It’s the band’s version of the classic Little Richard song. Little Richard of course passed away earlier in 2020.
Hank Jr.’s “All My Rowdy Friends Are Here on Monday Night” was a take on his “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight,” which was a play on “All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down.” Hank sang the theme for 22 seasons, starting on Monday Night Football’s 20th Anniversary in 1989 all the way up to 2011 when an off-handed comment by Williams on Fox & Friends landed him in political hot water.
Hank Williams Jr. said that Republican House Leader John Boehner playing golf with Barack Obama was like “Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu.” The comment was not meant to be a direct comparison of Hitler and Obama (any more than Boehner and Netanyahu). It was meant as an illustration of Boehner and Obama’s political differences. Benjamin Netanyahu is the Prime Minister of Israel. However, the off-handed comment was taken differently by some elements of the public, and ESPN felt pressure to remove the country icon from the opening.
Hank Jr. returned to singing the Monday Night Football theme song in 2017.

Only commercials I have seen where people are wearing masks are service-sector industry commercials. Burger King and Uber are showing masks because they are desperate to convey to the 50% of Americans are scared to death of going anywhere that isn’t their backyard that they are taking safety seriously.
I have yet to see a State Farm or Bud commercial during today’s NFL games that has people wearing masks.

Man, this comment shows, at least, that you’ve never played or been around sports at a high level. The amount of time I spent poring over power-play diagrams and d-zone coverages back when I played hockey was absurd. I was friends with some of the football guys, and their coverages and protection schemes were ten times as complicated as ours. Unless you’re a absurdly talented X receiver or something to even get on the field you have to memorize and completely understand every nuance of a playbook the size of a physics textbook. Functionally illiterate my ass. Your average O-lineman is probably smarter than 90% of the population.

Time moves on. A “rowdy” 70-year-old is not exactly the demographic MNF is looking for. Gen Z’ers, millennials, or whatever they’re called, don’t even know who Hank Jr. is. Or that there’s a Hank Sr. and a Hank Jr. Heck, he even acknowledged, himself–in song–that he’s a “Dinosaur.”
Even if Hank Jr. were someone non-political, like, say, Waylon, he’d probably be out. But when you add to in his association with Republican/right wing politics/ Palin, the Obama thing, etc., it’s kind of amazing that he managed to come back–in the current, P.C. environment.
Try playing “If The South Woulda Won” at a public venue. You’d be lucky if they didn’t try to charge you with a hate crime.

Things can become outdated. But they can also become nostalgic. Should they change the fanfare at the beginning of Star Wars movies because it’s outdated? No, they keep it in, because it immediately evokes a familiarity and nostalgia. That’s likely why ESPN brought Hank Jr. back in the first place.
I really don’t have a dog in this race. I was just reporting the news. Maybe Hank Jr. comes back next year, maybe he doesn’t. ESPN cited COVID specifically as the reason, and there’s no reason not to believe them.

Trigger, that’s the problem with “modern” society, that EVERYTHING has been politicized! I quite watching pro sports several years ago when they got politicized. And just when you think that sports couldn’t possibly get even more politicized, they do get more political. It used to be a lot of us liked watching sports to escape politics, but now we have found other things to do. And it’s the same with a lot of movies and music. If they want to “preach” to me, I sure won’t be in their audience. One can only hope that MLB, the NFL, etc, all go bankrupt, and soon. But hey, with all of those football players out of work, maybe some of the stronger ones can apply for roadie jobs with bands? 🙂

When have sports ever not reflected modern society? Did you complain when every pro sports league wrapped themselves in the flag post-9/11 for purely commercial purposes?
Sports have always had some politics around them, the difference is social media and 24/7 news networks have allowed athletes (and everyone else) a pulpit to speak from.
And the leagues will never go bankrupt because they get massive government subsidies and are essentially protected from any competition by anti-trust exceptions. You have a better chance of winning the lottery AND getting struck by lightning at the EXACT same time than the NFL ever going out of business. If the NFL loses money it has nothing to do with conservative or liberal fans turning their back on the product and everything to do with cord-cutting hurting the networks & cable companies who pay them their tv contracts and changing preferences in youth sports leading to less talent on the field (#1 sport amongst youth is now soccer).

Oh man, the media, etc, jumped all over him and the league made him stop kneeling to pray. So why did the league allow Colon Krapperdick (yes, I spelled his name correctly!) to kneel and disrespect the National Anthem, and by extension, most of the fans who actually like their country. Remember, it’s not the millenial woke-boys who would have bought tickets to watch football! (Heck, I’m so old, I can remember when Jim McMahon got reprimanded by Pete Rozelle merely for wearing a headband that had “Taco Bell” written on it!)
And here’s the deal…. Do you have a job? If so, would you be able to go to that job and spout off about whatever “cause” you wanted to support, while on your employer’s dime? The answer is NO, you’d get fired quicker than you could sing Jambalaya.
And in the past, even when there were things associated with sports like Jose Feliciano’s horrid rendition of the National Anthem during the 1968 baseball World Series, nobody tried to “cancel” Feliciano, or stop him from performing elsewhere. But now, the social justice crybullies tried to “cancel” Hank Jr, not only from having the gig for a football theme song, but they want to cancel him from performing at all.

If you don’t think that the NFL’s embrace of the Military & Patriotism isn’t rooted in commercial interests, you are fooling yourself. My comment has nothing to do with “love of Country” and everything to do with having a healthy cynicism of the intentions of private enterprises and their embrace of the American flag whenever it is most beneficial for them. I would argue a “true patriot” would not come running to local governments for tax breaks whenever they want to build a stadium that will sit vacant for the majority of the year.

Truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Hank Jr. has been more than happy to stir the pot when he gets a live mic or shows up on Fox News over the last 20 years and considering we all know Hank Jr. is more likely to scream “Blue Lives Matter” than “Black Lives Matter”, ESPN probably didn’t want any potential headaches.
I also think the song has run its course and MNF needs a deep reset. MNF has been a crappy TV product for years now, with poor production, poor announcers, and terrible matchups (especially late in the season). ESPN probably realizes the product is stale and needs a refresh, but also saw an opportunity to eliminate a guy who clearly doesn’t care that much about doing the MNF song, as least not enough to not run his mouth on divisive cable news networks.

It’s all ok. For every person dragging the NFL there are 5 fans who particularly love it this year. My husband and I just set up an extra TV so we could watch Red Zone and the games we bet on at the same time.
As far as the song goes, I hope they use Carrie Underwood and Joan Jett, they are awesome together.

Those guys need to get over themselves pretending they can empathize with the American people through the gates of their mansions. If they want to make a difference, they can run for office or send some of the wealth back into their communities for education and safety.

I have traveled quite regularly for work over the past few months. I’ve also been to NASCAR races and in October I’m flying to Texas for the race and Wade & Randys rescheduled hold my beer show at Billy Bob’s . I haven’t had so much as a sniffle (did have a headache one time I think). Traveling before and after the pandemic is like night and day. For example a fun part of traveling used to be exploring new cities and trying new restaurants. It’s now work and a hotel room. it’s opening up the DoorDash app and finding a delivery menu that looks appetizing so that it can be delivered to a lonely hotel room.
There are lots of stuff I wonder about this virus but the one thing that I don’t have to wonder is people’s opinion of it. And that opinion is that many folks that I see along the way are scared to death. So no wonder companies like ESPN rideshare apps or restaurants are doubling down I’m promoting everything we are told not to do in this pandemic.
As for me, I will keep enjoying my job and I will not be scared to live life. Because the truth is we only get so many trips around the sun and we never know when will be let off this ride.

There is no way in hell the song returns when we are allowed by our masters to assume normal activity.
