Hellbound Glory Announces New Album, “Nobody Knows You”

Before the collective country music population was losing their minds over independent country revolutionaries such as Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, and Zach Bryan, it was Leroy Virgil of Hellbound Glory that was reading the mainstream their rights, and releasing one insanely good country song after another out of Reno, Nevada.
2008’s Scumbag Country and 2010’s Old Highs and New Lows still hold up as underground country standards, and if you want something with a bit more rock edge, check out the Shooter Jennings-produced Pinball from 2017 that launched the viral hit “Hellbound Blues,” or 2020’s Pure Scum. Now the pair is back for the new album The Immortal Hellbound Glory: Nobody Knows You to be released on September 30th via BCR Media, as well as a new song called “Can’t Wait to Never See You Again” (listen below).
The new song features Leroy Virgil’s always incisive writing, though enveloped in a more traditional country approach this time, with fiddle finding its place high in the mix, and a burst of harmonies embellishing the chorus. Perhaps the new album will be a little bit more sedated and rootsy than the last two. Saving Country Music has also received a whiff of another song from the album called “Evacuation Song,” which is about the destruction of the California town of Paradise in 2018 where 86 people died, and takes a more folk-like acoustic approach.
“The album weaves in and out of classic Leroy Virgil country, and dabbles in blues and folk — including standards and new cuts from Virgil,” BCR Media touts, so maybe we get a bit more of what we heard on Leroy’s more stripped down album Streets of Aberdeen on the new album, we’ll just have to see.
Though players have come and gone from the Hellbound Glory camp over the years, Leroy Virgil has remained the constant, trying at times to launch solo careers, or to release albums under other names such as the eXcavators. But Virgil has always come back to the Hellbound Glory name, which despite it’s continued underground status, is nothing less than legendary in certain circles.
The Immortal Hellbound Glory: Nobody Knows You is now available for pre-order.

Which is why I asked.

This is great news! I saw Leroy perform in Sacramento last October at Goldfields. It was awesome even though there was probably less than 50 total people there and it was just him and one guy on standup bass and another with a lap steel guitar. He was still recovering from a leg injury and looked pretty rough but was very nice to me and my teenage son that went with me to the show. He’s a very good performer with a special charisma while onstage. This guy is the real deal. It’s easy to believe that he’s lived most of what he has written in songs. Looking forward to this album and seeing him again…hopefully with a full band next time…and hopefully he’ll play Hellbound Blues which he didn’t last time.

Never heard of these guys but man this song just blows me away. Lots going to depend on the other songs on the album but I may have found me another favorite. Great job trigger, introducing me to some really good sounds. One question does shooter contribute any to the sound or is he just producing, if asking makes me a noob, it will just have to be.
August 20, 2022 @ 7:30 am
I’ll be a noob and ask the same then.

I’m sure it depends on the specific project. Some producers are really hands on, some are really hands off. Some are hands on for some project, and others, their greatest contribution is getting the hell out of the way and letting the magic happen. I think the best producers know their place—wherever that is—and let the music come to them, while also understanding the inherent sound of each performer. Early on, I think Shooter struggled as a producer, and also turned a lot of country projects rock because that’s the sound he wanted. Now, I think he’s really sunk his teeth into what being a good producer is, and I’ve been impressed with his recent projects, including the new Kelsey Waldon album I reviewed earlier this week.
If you’re asking specifically if Shooter Jennings plays on the albums, if he does, it’s likely keys on a song or two. Otherwise, he brings in other players.

Thanks for the reply. I just wondered cause I got a bit of that Jennings vibe on the song though it could be their sound anyway. Overall great stuff, hopefully you can write up your thoughts on the album once it releases.. while I don’t usually depend on others for my listening decisions, I do like to hear from others especially someone like you who listens to lots of music.

In the past Shooter has. I know he did on Jamie Wyatt’s last album. I guess it really depends on the song and if it calls for it.
August 19, 2022 @ 11:51 am
Oh I mean I know the producer contributes, I’m talking about directly playing

Now we’re talkin. Hellbound is always on when we’re drivin down to the county line.
August 19, 2022 @ 12:55 pm
Love it like the last one. Can’t wait to never see you again brings several people to mind !
August 19, 2022 @ 12:56 pm
Can’t wait to this. Love everything Hellbound puts out. Would love to see Rico back in the band…dude shreds on the lap steel and was fantastic live.
August 19, 2022 @ 1:16 pm
Cannot wait!
August 19, 2022 @ 1:18 pm
Hell yes. I just wish mountain lions lament would’ve been on there I love that song
August 19, 2022 @ 3:53 pm
He’ll release it at some point.

My favourite living country singer

Always excited for new Hellbound. I love Leroy’s songwriting but I think it’d be really cool for him to release a covers album at some point. He seats knocks his favorite songs outta the park. If anyone hasn’t heard them, I suggest looking up his Rolling Stones covers from years back.
August 20, 2022 @ 7:58 pm
Hold on… I’m still not done playing “Damned Angel” every week. That one really set its hooks in me.
August 21, 2022 @ 5:37 pm
This dude… Man, alive. He needs to get his ass back to Nashville! I know more than a few scumbags who’d be front row at that show!
August 23, 2022 @ 6:28 am
Leroy is the real deal. This is what music should always be about. Real situations told my people with real talent. Hellbound glory forever!
August 24, 2022 @ 7:34 am
HBG is one of the very greatest amongst all of the incredible artists I’ve been introduced to here at SCM. Thanks, Trig.
August 24, 2022 @ 8:57 pm
Thank God, keep the great music coming Leon
August 25, 2022 @ 3:29 am
Shit yeah. Leroy is the cream of the crop above all the other trendier gold record getting names. Great writer and actually has a personality. Can’t wait for this. Has never disappointed. Was hoping Jackson Hole would be on there but I’m still excited nonetheless. Shooter has done a great job on these last few HBG records. I know it’s going to absolutely killer.
