Joe Rogan Gives Ringing Endorsement to Tyler Childers
If you tracked the rapid and uncanny ascent of Tyler Childers producer Sturgill Simpson, then you know that podcaster, comedian, and public personality Joe Rogan played a critical role in the explosion of interest in Sturgill’s album Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, and ultimately in his Grammy-winning career. With a podcast that receives more views and listens than most cable news network shows, Rogan is an influencer of the highest order.
Now Joe Rogan is singing the praises of Tyler Childers. In a recent Instagram post, Joe Rogan said, “This Tyler Childers album is fucking great. I’ve had it on a loop for the last few hours,” with a picture of Tyler’s 2017 album Purgatory as the image. It’s interesting to note that along with Tyler’s new album Country Squire going #1 in country this week, his previous record Purgatory also received a sizable boost, re-emerging on the charts at #32, garnering nearly 4 million new streams, along with selling over 1,000 new physical copies.
The next question is if Joe Rogan will step up and have Tyler Childers on the podcast proper, just as he has Sturgill Simpson three times, along with Chris Stapleton, Wheeler Walker Jr., and Shooter Jennings. But exposure is one thing. Releasing music that resonates is another. When Joe Rogan endorsed Sturgill, it was the country music America and the world was looking for, but was not being pushed by mainstream radio. Tyler Childers has that same resonance, where as soon as someone hears it, they connect with it, country fan or otherwise.
The Joe Rogan endorsement is just another example of how Tyler Childers is following in the footsteps of Sturgill Simpson’s ascent. We’ll just have to see if the subsequent opportunities like Saturday Night Live appearances and Grammy Awards follow. Just like Sturgill, the upside potential for Tyler Childers is enormous because he’s an unknown quantity to most … at least at the moment.

the unsung heroes of spreading good music are Rogan and the Rock who are both big fans of people you mentioned and others and both have millions….and millions of followers. I really can see him having Tyler on the podcast since Joe is good friends with Stu. Now I want to listen to a podcast with the 3 of them.

Still on the fence about Rogan. Sometimes I think he’s cool, sometimes I think he’s a moron. I do appreciate that he features some good musicians on his show, though. I’ll bet money Tyler makes an appearance on the show soon enough.

I consider Rogan to be one of the more transparent influencers in our world right now. He has such a wide variery of thinkers as guests on his podcast. It’s very clear that he doesn’t care what people think of him. That’s a good thing. One way he could grow is developing more acceptance and openness to organized religion, but that’s about all I can think of, and it’s not like he goes after religious folks, anyway.

I don’t mean I object to his opinions, just that it frequently sounds like he really has no idea what he’s talking about, like he literally doesn’t have a handle on certain topics he’s talking about with guests, at all.
Not sure if that’s an interview technique that encourages his guests to keep talking, or if he just genuinely doesn’t know stuff and takes his interviewees’ word for it.
I guess maybe it seems odd to me ’cause most mainstream media interviewers act like they know absolutely everything and don’t waste a moment trying patronize and condescend their interviewees.

I think this is by design. He brings on folks to help him understand topics. He’s not like that which is why I think he resonates with people. I don’t always agree with him or his guests, but he has an open mind which is more than I can say for any news network. He’s given Sanders and Yang over an hour each which is how our potential future leaders should be presented (not in soundbite debates). I’m not a fan other either of those candidates, but I feel I understand where they’re coming from thanks to Rogan.
I have no doubt a Childers podcast is in the works.

He constantly puts a disclaimer before he speaks that he is not an expert on a particular subject matter. But he does his best to remember things.
I think he’s great and pretty reasonable person.
I find it interesting all the guests he brings on (whether I agree with them or not) and as BJJ practitioner myself I find his commentary great.

The Rock and Rogan suck the coolness out of the music I like. I don’t want to see Hummers in the parking lot and hear dudes ordering red bull and vodkas and Childers’ shows!
BIG THUMBS DOWN 👎🏿!

I had that same mentality when I went to shows in the 90’s, but I think it’s unfair to the artist. I hope that Mr. Childers gets as much exposure as he can, makes as much money as he can, let the posers come in droves, and hopefully Mr. Childers continues to stay true to the music that attracted Trig and the rest of us in the first place. I love seeing small artists work hard and get the rewards they deserve. If that means I have to share a venue with fake fans who heard about Mr. Childers last week… well, they are paying, and that’s okay with me. Besides, if someone is wearing sandals, or drinks red bull… who are we to judge what sort of fans they are? I’m just gonna stay in my lane, enjoy the music, and hope that Mr. Childers is raking in the cash.

I agree. We can’t be on this site complaining the bro country is popular and that country radio should be traditional country and then turn around and get mad when real traditional country artists get popular and infiltrate the mainstream. It’s the only way things will change and if it takes Joe Rogan, The Rock, Johnny Knoxville, and others to do that, so be it.

Not sure if you’re trolling, but I’m not concerned about this at all. Childers and most artists covered and endorsed by SCM don’t have a big commercial footprint at all, so they need all the help they can get. If they’re making a living from their art, we get to enjoy that art well into the future.
My biggest concern is that my favorite obscure indie country artists can’t make ends meet, burn out, and have to quit music altogether.
Regarding the crowds at Childers shows (I’ve been to three so far, DC, LA, and Nashville) there’s plenty of bros in the crowds already. But, there’s hippies, hipsters, and traditionalists too. Live and let live. Tyler is the biggest thing in American roots music in a long time (since Sturgill, at least). It’s gonna happen.

I found this site when I first heard Chris Stapleton and wanted to read more about him. I love coming here and reading about a world which I am not really part of since I do not consider my self a country fan. But I have to say I have tried to like Tyler Childers and connect with his songs and have failed. I do not know why not. He just does not connect with me like Chris Stapleton or Jason Isbel (to a lesser extent) did. I also have the same problem with Sturgil Simpson.

Don’t feel bad. People like what they like. I never got Stapleton or Turnpike, or Isbell for that matter. I mean, I know they are talented and get why people like them, but in my mind they are way overrated and nothing all that special.

The parallels with Sturgill and Tyler are almost getting bizarre. I mean literally everything from Joe Rogan down to going from ponytails to high and tight at the exact same point in their careers.

I don’t personally care for Rogan, and I find his interviews long and meandering, even with guests I like. However, I do appreciate the variety of people that he brings on his podcast and the ability to present those people in long form. I personally think that Marc Maron and Aisha Tyler are better interviewers, but at the same point, I am glad that good artists like Tyler are getting exposure. We can’t complain about how mainstream music is terrible but then complain when good artists get bigger followings. I personally prefer smaller shows myself, but that is my personal preference. I’m not mad at the artist for wanting more.

I think you are missing the point a bit. We don’t complain about mainstream music simply because of crowd sizes or the bigger following. We complain about it because it is 99% of the time absolutely horrible music. If people are whining about Tyler getting too popular, it’s out of a selfish and unrealistic want to see him at smaller venues, for him to keep that underground “cool” factor, etc. Totally different thing than bashing popular bro country for being bad.

If you want to go deeper, you should check out the John Prine connection. This can be traced to Simpson also, but the connection to Tyler Childers may be closer to Prine.

Isbell is a genius in my musical books…and Stapleton is also incredible. Childers is an acquired taste but outstanding lyricist and has a very bright future. My two cents.
