John Prine Streaming Tribute Precedes New Unheard Music

The tradition in country music and Nashville is whenever a music great passes on like John Prine did on April 7th at the age of 73, the music community comes together to remember and honor their legacy. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 (of which Prine was a victim of), that opportunity is just not possible for the friends and family of Prine to do in person.

But a virtual celebration of Prine’s life and legacy has been planned for Thursday, June 11th called Picture Show: A Tribute Celebrating John Prine to be streamed online. Along with featuring memories and songs as well as rare and never-before-seen footage of John himself, those scheduled to perform or appear include Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Kacey Musgraves, Brandi Carlile, Vince Gill, Eric Church, Kelsey Waldon, and more. Celebrities that will also appear include Bill Murray, Stephen Colbert, and Billy Bob Thorton. See the full list of below.

Also after the presentation, there will be the revealing of a new John Prine song. In fact according to Prine’s wife Fiona Whelan Prine, the revered songwriter left a host of unreleased songs behind, and was working on a new record at the time of his passing. Prine’s record label Oh Boy Records will be releasing this music in the future.

“I have the resilience muscle, which is a little exhausted right now. But I’m gonna be okay. John left me a lot—a lot of memories, music, cars,” Fiona told CBS This Morning, one of the cars being a Porsche 911 that was purchased after it was announced that Prine would be receiving the Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 2020. Fiona said neither herself nor John could even get into it since it was so low to the ground.

As for putting together a proper tribute under the current circumstances, Fiona says, “It’s been difficult at times, but it’s also been a great distraction … It came as the biggest surprise when I learned about how deep and yet uncomplicated John’s faith was in God and the afterlife. [He] really did believe with no doubt that he would die and he would be in Heaven.”

Picture Show: A Tribute Celebrating John Prine will begin streaming at 6:30 p.m. Central. You can find an embedded player below, or watch on YouTube, or on Facebook. It will be available for viewing until Sunday, June 14th. The event benefits NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness), Alive and Make the Road New York.
