Kane Brown Fan Sounds off on Saving Country Music
Here at Saving Country Music, we are committed to equal time and opportunity for all perspectives and opinions on country music. Recently we published an article reporting on how Kane Brown has posted a derogatory meme on Twitter after not being nominated for even a single CMA Awards yet again, and eventually deleted his Twitter account altogether in anger. Kane Brown has since reinstated the Twitter account, which is now being run by his management as opposed to himself to avoid anymore combative moments or embarrassing situations.
Some Kane Brown fans took offense at Saving Country Music’s coverage of the Kane Brown CMA snub. So as we have done before, and in the interest of fair time, here is an actual email Saving Country Music received from a disgruntled Kane Brown fan.

Hi Penny,
I get where you’re coming from, but you will not find many sympathetic listeners here. It is not merely old music that those of us in this corner of the internet prefer, but good music. Good music can be modern, and much of the music we like and consider good is modern, but radio stations tend not to play the music we like as you can’t dance to it and it speaks to the soul more than just the body.
Imagine had country music evolved in a different way, more authentic to its roots, instead of borrowing from hip hop and pop. Much of it did, flirting instead with folk and bluegrass sounds. That music remains out there today and is still being made by artists you may never have heard of, like Tyler Childers and Colter Wall. We merely prefer that sort of music over the mainstream country sounds that are too indistinguishable from hip hop and pop for our ears.
Here, have a listen and see for yourself.

this is 2019
I fail to see how the current year justifies Kane Brown’s milquetoast R&B being called country music. And I also don’t understand why said milquetoast R&B has to be what the evolution of mainstream country music sounds like instead of, say, the albums the Turnpike Troubadours and Jason Boland released over the last couple of years.

So sick of EVERYONE trying to discredit Kane Brown and his music..he has busted his ass to get where he is..his fans well we are ride or die fans and have watched him do this from the jump and the fact that the CMAs or anyone else cannot accept and commend his hard work just like every other artist is pathetic and shows just why this world is the shit show it is today..his record sales and countless sold out shows are proof of just how good he is..look country music or music in general is an ever evolving art and I do not understand why people can’t just commend artists for their success instead of tearing them apart. And before anyone points out his twitter or any other social media post of frustration eat a slice of humble pie and understand the frustration instead of bashing a guy whose numbers literally speak for themselves! I am a lover of country music as well as many other genres and I love Johnny Cash and Waylon and every other old school country artist just as well but how quickly y’all forget that when they first came out boy they got hella hate from drifting from the typical country music sound as well..ou0tqlaw country ring a bell?! My point is if you don’t like his music fine don’t listen to it but don’t sit up on your high horse spewing hate either..Kane is a very humbled guy and is entitled to the same types of frustration that we all experience and the same frustration that drove Toby Keith away as well..this world is so ridiculously full of hate why is it necessary to drag someone and spew such nastiness..why not just move on and go listen to whatever it is you deem country for yourself?! I’d say his countless accolades and accomplishments and all that green he’s getting again certainly speak for themselves so do us all a favor and just move on..be gone that simple! Also for anyone to say the CMA’s have not become absolute garbage over the last 3-4 years if not longer is living in an alternate universe..plenty of disses to many legit country musicians!

Like so many new age fans, you simply do not get it, Michelle. Country music isn’t an “ever evolving art” or whatever progressive, cannon fodder bullshit adage you or any of these mainstream fucks like to spew. Country music doesn’t need electronica or any of these macbook pro artists/soundcloud level artists “saving” a genre steeped in AUTHENTICITY. Kane Brown isn’t authentic. His “music” is being force fed through country radio and record execs that don’t guve two shits about the history, only the bottom dollar. What you are witnessing is the general public saying enough. His body of work is shit and so is his attitude.

Well, we wouldn’t, but the fact that it’s so ubiquitous (look it up, you have the Internet) makes such rather difficult. Just as an example, here’s a barbecue chain here in San Antonio, Texas, that has one or the other of the city’s two mainstream “country” stations playing on their radios every time you go in there.
(The above is known as “context,” and you might or might not have learned what the word “ubiquitous” means from it.)
But seriously, though, you and your ilk remind me of nothing so much as the old saw from the gun-rights community, rephrased to fit the situation:
“Why don’t you traditional country music fans go off and start your own genre?”
“We did. Who the hell let you in?”

September 9, 2019 @ 9:26 am
No, Michelle, it’s YOU who are part of the problem this country has.
-The problem that he’s *entitled* to a reward because he’s worked hard.
– The problem that he should be considered country just by virtue of the fact that that’s the label he wants to slap onto it not because it has anything to do with country music (which it doesn’t)
-The problem of “if you don’t like it don’t listen” when a bunch of promoters try to get people to listen regardless by playing the same 40 songs on repeat on “country” radio.
The problem is YOU, Michelle, not those who want good honest music and not the same B.S. rehashed over and over again.
jjazznola
September 10, 2019 @ 12:04 am
Although I am not into rap or beats in my country music, you seem to insinuate that there is some kind of cutoff date when country music needed to stop evolving. Country music has sounded different from year to year and from decade to decade if you haven’t noticed. I’m sure some people were appalled when they first heard electric or steel guitars or miked drums or strings introduced into the music many years ago. Now that is the norm. Should it have stopped at Hank or Earnest or Kitty or Patsy or Willie or Johnny? As for Brown, you say that “What you are witnessing is the general public saying enough”? People seem to love the guy! Not me but his song is a smash hit! Country radio would not play it if no one wanted to hear it! The funny thing is, I used to think the same thing when I first heard Shania Twain back in the 90s. Instead of getting mad I just stopped listening.
Kaleb
September 8, 2019 @ 1:15 pm
Honey, it’s a reward show, not a damn chance for Kane Brown to show off. EVERY artist busts their ass, that’s the business. To imply that the artists WE care about, who don’t get radio plays, aren’t busting their ass off is the kind of ludicrousness that comes only from the truly ignorant. The fact of the matter is, it’s the Country Music Awards, and it should go to the best COUNTRY artists.
Kane Brown fans are more than entitled to the music they enjoy. But it is not pure country. It’s a blend of country, rock, and hip hop. To give Kane Brown the award would be an insult to Chris Stapleton, Midland, Kacey Musgraves, the people out there who are truly making decent modern, mainstream country.
You’re coming into the den of lovers of underground country, the sort of country that is new but traditional and representative of an evolution that has taken place over decades. To form a sort of pure, true, American sound that harkens the listener to visions of back porches and whiskey, steel guitars and the smell of sweet Kentucky pine. You will find no sympathies here. Not when authentic country music has been invaded by hip hop and pop artists.
There is simply far too much to do than to cry over Kane Brown. And with that I will heed my own advice and move on with my day. Good day, ma’am.
Cool Lester Smooth
September 9, 2019 @ 10:06 am
I really don’t think there’s any hip hop at all in Kane Brown’s sound.
It’s schmaltzy yacht rock with some R&B influences – like modern day Kenny Chesney, actually.
jjazznola
September 10, 2019 @ 12:15 am
Kacey Musgraves’ last album is certainly NOT decent modern, mainstream country music. Even she will admit that. I find her as boring as it gets, especially her last album. And Chris Stapleton, who I’m somewhat of a fan has plenty of rock and soul in his music. Most popular country these days has some other types of music mixed in.
Kaleb
September 10, 2019 @ 7:17 am
Kacey Musgrave’s latest album:
– Decent
– Modern
– Mainstream
– And yes, country… Country pop, but still more country than 90% of what is played on country radio. Great songwriting, and every song features some combination of pedal steel, mandolin, or banjo. Kacey Musgraves is a net positive for country music, and her last album, while more poppy, is still in that category. Sorry if you don’t like her (personally I find her music to be A+ quality), but yes, country.
You’re right that most country today has some other genres mixed in with it — that’s not the problem to be honest. Hank Williams formed his sound by borrowing from ragtime and the blues. Willie Nelson was heavily influenced by Jazz musicians such as Django, and combined that sound with the Western Swing of Bob Willis to give him the base for his authentic sound.
The problem comes in when the base components that makes country music country start to disappear. Part of that is technical — instruments like the steel guitar and banjo being replaced by EDM sounds. Part of it is the decay of the beautiful storytelling country is known for. Part of it is just about the culture and who is making the music — Nashville establishment types or people who relate to the struggle of the American people? Are we laying some banjo synthesizer over a trap beat and selling records, or are we putting a few pickers on a record over the soulful, bluesy, twangy voice of someone who knows something about life?
We’ve got to draw a line somewhere. And I don’t think Kacey Musgraves or Chris Stapleton are part of the problem.

Maybe there were 5 who had songs or performances that were better than his and he missed a cut off somewhere. People are only talking about this because he threw a childish hissy fit – nothing humble about that. The CMAs don’t give participation trophies. I think the CMAs see it for exactly what it is and he showed exactly who he is.
And we don’t listen to his music.

Most of his numbers were artificially boosted on Spotifye. Thank god Lame brown didn’t win an award he is as country as Jay Z, the difference is he is a D list pop star. What a whiny bitch bitching about how he didn’t win an award. Reminds me of 3rd grade. And stop your shit about evolving. playing an entirely different genere on the radio is not evolution but rather substitution.

Right up front, I like Maren, but can’t stand Kane Brown. Or Jason Aldean or Luke Bryan.
I’m all in for Sturgill and Cody and Miranda and Eric Church and Jon Pardi and Sunny Sweeney and Margo Price and Jason Isbell. Point being, let’s not just jam Maren into the same box as Kane. There’s an account by the name of countrygirl countrymusiclover that is always trolling the comments of every music video on Youtube, attacking traditional fans who leave comments that point out how the songs don’t sound country. Yeah, she’s awful. She doesn’t seem to think there is a thing such as pop country and I remember seeing her defend Kane Brown before. He can’t be that good! He wasn’t even nominated for an award. How does the BEST Country Music Songwriter/Singer not even get nominated?
Maybe because he isn’t country. He is R&B with a little country flavour, but I guess someone felt he was not good enough to compete with the R&B so they classified him as country.
To bad for you, and his other fans this site highlights and promotes authentic country music. Kane Brown is not authentic country. Plenty of sites that will promote Kane Brown as the best, this isn’t one of them.

Again dont like it dont listen to it! Spewing hate trying to discredit an obviously successful musician only proves my point..Honestly you’re part of the problem this country has..haters gonna hate but hey who is actually winning here…uh huh thought so! Umm also new age country listener um i was raised on greats like George Strait..Johnny Cash..Hank Williams Jr..The Bellamy Brothers..The Oakridge Boys..Alabama..Charlie Daniels etc so I’m no new age country listener I’ve listened to it all my life.. I believe i stated I like all genres of music from King George Strait Kenny Chesney Kane Brown Dylan Schneider The Bellamy Brothers and Oakridge Boys and all the like to Metallica AC/DC Def Leppard Bon Jovi etc to Ed Sheeran Maroon 5 Taylor Swift Rob Thomas The Jonas Bros Sean Mendes and any and everything in between..small minded people small minded thoughts! To each their own how bout you0 do you and I’ll do me and just appreciate whatever music you wanna appreciate..my point was and remains like him or not he has busted his ass just the same.✌ out

Busted his ass how? Was it when Nashville launched him to the top because of his race? He’s been in Music for 5 years with nothing but crap, and covers of other peoples songs, but actual artists bust their ass for 15 years and still get no recognition by the mainstream

The narrative is, of course, that Kane Brown fans are mindless savages worthy of ridicule, but the racists just need to ‘rise above’ their base instincts so they don’t confirm country music fan stereotypes.

You know if people want to call Kane Brown and Lil Nas X country, they better go back to 1998 and chart “Ghetto Cowboy” by Mo Thugs (aka Krayzie Bone & Layzie Bone from Bone Thugs N Harmony) on the Country Charts.
Mo Thugs didn’t consider that song real country, and KB and Lil Nas X shouldn’t consider their music either. From a Hip Hop/Rap standpoint Old Town Road is a fun song. I don’t understand their desire to be a part of a genre that they clearly aren’t creating music in.

Dear Mr. Brown,
Do Not concern yourself with industry awards. They mean very little. I hope enough of your peers have been able to reach out to you, to help you understand that such awards are internally/externally political, and have NOTHING to do with your tremendous talent. You are one of the most telented artists to hit the scene in any genre of music, in several decades. Vince Gill, Randy Travis, The Eagles notwithstanding. But don’t you worry, you are Totally in their league.
My beautiful husband Stephen’s heart exploded Sept. 2nd, of last year. A few months later, one of Steve’s best friends sent me via text, your song, Heaven. I was in Miami, and the Florida Keys, working to recover my bearings, after Stephen’s death. Pulled over, one one of the islands, to listen to your song, several times, and was blown away. A couple days later, texted the friend and said “Surely you cannot be telling me this is the way Stephen felt.” The friend texted back, “Yes.”
You touch people, Kane Brown. That is exactly where you need your rewards to come from. God has given you an enormous talent. Do not concern yourself with the petty jealousies of others, who feel threatened. Love them, pray for them, and retain the joy of making music.
I was basically kicked out of the University of Vermont, in ’05, for a keen understanding of nuclear medicine. But mostly, for supporting the President Bushes, and a non shakable belief in God. By the Grace of God, graduated with nuclear medicine degree in ’07, at Keiser University, in Miami, Fl. Was honored to work in the desert Southwest for 9 years, working with more than one wonderful physician to try to help every patient we encountered. All the while, putting up with horseshit from the FBI, after a “5 year interview of spouses who had been divorced by one of their “special agents”. When telling Mr. William Harned, “Bix investigator”, aka, former FBI “special agent”, at a meeting at The Bennigan’s on Gulf Way Blvd., on St. Pete Beach, that my husband, their “special agent”, had knocked me down and broken my arm, on a fathers day, there seemed to be little interest, let alone, asking them how a NASA laptop ended up in our home. When several months later, i called Mr. Harned and asked whatever became of their agent who broke my arm, i was told by Mr. Harned, that if i pursued the matter, “There could be dire consequences.”
Have told you all of the above, so you can understand that different forms of harassment mean nothing.
Keep doing what you are doing. It is very apparent that you had/have, a Mom who loves you. And, i believe your wife totally loves you, as well. Hold her close. She believes in you. Keep on doing you Kane, and do it with Joy.
Isn’t it Michael Flatley, of Riverdance, who intimated that the closer you get to your goal, the more negativity you will receive?

For a price, you can become an elite member of the CMA and get a vote. The Country Music Association is a 7,400-plus-member. The Awards are decided by around 7,400 members in over 40 countries worldwide. I recently read this. It doesn’t seem to like many votes. And from all over the world. Not just USA.

”For a price, you can become an elite member of the CMA and get a vote.”
wow…that sounds VERY democratic ( ?????) . if you can AFFORD it you can vote ??
first off , most folks who may be able to make a difference to radio playlists don’t listen to enough commercial ‘country’ music anymore to want to PAY for the right to vote on who is the lesser of all evils . secondly ….well ….actually ever mind . i think i’ve said it all with that.
radio ‘country’ is mostly geared to a casual radio listener content with musical wallpaper . outside of the fake ‘twang’ this is NOT music which represents traditions and does not bring people to the clubs or dance floors .as i’ve mentioned here many times , i’ve spent a good part of my musical life ‘ in the trenches ‘ playing live . people in the clubs are NOT asking for the Ol Town Roads or Kane Brown or Aldean whatsoever BECAUSE THEY CAN’T DANCE TO IT or relate to it .they are , however , COUNTRY music fans familiar with the genre’s history and will still request everything from Hank’s ‘Hey Good Lookin’ to Alabama’s stuff , from Patsy to George Strait ‘s ballads , ANYTHING approaching western swing to Midland and Brooks and Dunn . we almost never hear a request for ‘newer’ chart music in the clubs and we’re talking about quite an age cross-section .
It’s just a fact . this is forgettable fluff with mostly pop earmarks which radio advertisers will pay to sponsor BECAUSE OF THE MOSTLY URBAN DEMOGRAPHIC IT ATTRACTS …..young people with disposable incomes who will buy the products advertised by these sponsors . if you are , in fact , a fan of this kind of trendy radio music ….fine . but please know that you aren’t listening to COUNTRY music whatsoever and , in fact , you are undermining the work of REAL country artists and writers when you support the advertisers who force radio to play this non-descript stuff in order to huck their wares .
just understand that even if you don’t think you’d enjoy or want to know anything about REAL country music you are in the war to KILL something you may not fully understand .

sbach66
September 9, 2019 @ 12:37 pm
The concert was in March; they had a house band with Vince Gill, then a speaker would present a clip from the series, each dealing with one of the episodes (more or less), then the house band would back up someone singing a song from that era. Rhiannon Giddons and Ketch Secor did a great banjo & fiddle duet of an old standard (can’t remember the name, not well known), and she came back later and killed on “Crazy.” Secor also sang “In the Jailhouse Now” solo as well. Marty Stuart, Vince Gill, and Ricky Skaggs brought the house down on “Uncle Pen,” and Marty followed that with a killer mandolin version of “Orange Blossom Special.” Another highlight was Dwight, Dierks Bentley, and Vince covering “Hungry Eyes” and “Streets of Bakerfield” after they showed a clip around the Bakersfield sound. Rodney Crowell slayed “Pancho and Lefty” and Larry Gatlin did a nice job with “Sunday Morning Coming Down.” Vince also covered “I Will Always Love You.” Roseanne Cash did “I Still Miss Someone,” and the whole crew predictably closed with “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” There were some others, I know Asleep at the Wheel and Holly Williams also performed.
I think it’s also being streamed on the PBS site as well. Well worth a couple of hours.

Meh. I’ve never heard Kane Brown but, I’d say it’s a safe bet he is not for me. I also think it’s safe to assume I don’t mind if other people enjoy his music. My values and background are so different from most people, it’s only natural we don’t like the same music. I’m just fine with that.
What is interesting is the animosity within the “country” music “community.” Pop country fans viciously attacking traditional country fans and calling them bitter in the most bitter and hateful manner possible. Traditional country fans calling the “country” music of the masses hot trash in an equally bitter tone. Traditional country fans personally attacking OTHER TRADITIONAL COUNTRY FANS because they don’t like Sturgill’s acid rock anime album movie??? It does get weird And unfortunate to such an extent I cannot truly say I’m comfortable calling myself a part of this traditional country music “community” even as a diehard fan of most all the revered traditional artists both past and present. That is a problem!
In all likelihood, the reality is we are all a little bitter and silly, both camps. Pop country gets zero respect from actual country people. Amazing traditional country musicians struggle to make a living because the world doesn’t care about them. Make no mistake, I like everyone from Hank Sr. to Waylon to Clarence to Cody and Tyler, I’ve still not heard old town road or Kane Brown because I simply don’t care at all so, musically, I’m almost entirely with one camp. However, my camp is clearly bitter at times and painfully slow to accept reality and adapt.
One could point to any number of industries, artists, hobbyists, etc. that are handling being niche better than we are as traditional country fans. On YouTube the masses watch dude perfect, or kitten videos, or whatever gets a billion views these days and those folks make the millions on views/dreams alone but, plenty of people with smaller audiences of dedicated fans still make healthy livings playing guitar, or riding mountain bikes, or whatever they are passionate about through Patreon or other creative methods.
One thing the fans of my music could do better is recognize that, as long as we demand to literally hear Kentucky, or Appalachia, or Texas culture, accents, playing styles, etc. in our music, our artists are not going to have the national/international appeal of homogenized pop music that happens to include the word “y’all” and maybe includes an instrument that sounds half country if you squint on top of the 808s and finger snaps of modern pop.
Tyler Childers and Cody Jinks are the best musicians doing it right now in my view but, they simply aren’t gonna appeal to as many people as Taylor Swift or John Mayer BECAUSE they do represent a segment of society growing smaller by the day. They represent us and we are responsible for supporting them. To that end, I believe we, as enthusiasts for a dying way of life and style of music, have an obligation to find an alternate way for these guys to be rewarded for their efforts.
I got a lot of flack for saying it but, I maintain that we, as the grassroots movement, failed Tyler. That man toured ACTUAL dive bars relentlessly (and worked incredibly hard just to reach The venues composing Garth’s definition of the term). While I hope he saved some money in that era, I’m fairly certain that he did all that work and traveling as a labor of love rather than because he was getting wealthy. As someone who has seriously considered a career in traditional country music, it really just isn’t worth it unless you wanna do the major label thing and compromise to reach more people. I’ll stick to my day job and play for fun. That’s where we fall short as a community. There’s no reason these guys shouldn’t have fairly lucrative careers while choosing to remain independent and authentic. If this community put half the effort that we put into trashing pop country music fans (and fellow traditionalists alike) into making sure we actually pay for the music in a way that reaches the artist prior to the overhead, we’d have more than 10 artists. Buying physical copies and merch directly from the artist’s website is great but, the key to saving real country music, imho, is to stop expecting the world to return to appreciating the articulate southern traditional singer songwriter and just do it ourselves beyond streaming it for free. All the world wants is a catchy hook, mumble rap, and something that makes them numb. Even speaking to be understood is irrelevant to the masses. Yet, we expect sad songs about coal mining to compete in the numbers game? We demand they be authentic real country or we won’t respect you but, the only way you’re gonna make a living is if the whole world Starts caring about what it’s like in our 5 states? Unfortunately, we don’t get to choose what the rest of the world likes. We might have an argument that they shouldn’t rightfully call what they do “country music” but, imho, that’s not the battle most worth fighting. I’ll take “Americana” because deep down the masses know they’re stealing “country.”
However, like a lone Methodist picking a fight with the only other Protestant for being Baptist in a world full of satanists, we really need to get our shit together here (it’s a tongue-in-cheek parallel btw). Sometimes we just aren’t a very impressive community. Don’t believe me? Just ask for a definition of what country music actually is in a room full of traditionalists and watch people’s mother’s get degraded with hostility. We definitely have our problems but, we also still have good music. We need to find out how to keep it on our own terms. Could we really blame Tyler or Cody if they did decide to sell out and make pop country? Either could certainly easily write something for the masses if they wanted. Can we really blame Sturgill for saying to hell with traditional country music (at least for now)? The best of us (aside from Trigger, with whom I may not always agree but, to whom both we and these artists owe a great deal of gratitude, whether we like it or not) are buying a ticket to a show, a cd, and a T-shirt at best. I for one gain more value from these guys than I’m able to give back. Maybe saving country music comes from changing that and getting enthusiasts involved more so than expecting the world to come back around.
I agree with Tyler and respect his integrity and optimism about playing the old game but, maybe, just maybe, the answer comes from starting a new game.
Sorry for yet another long post but, I’m really looking for a reason to continue bothering with the community part. We are a mess. I’d continue to read the articles but, anything other than “the world is dumb if Tyler doesn’t outsell Florida Georgia Line and Sturgill is a genius even if all he does is read the phonebook over Christian hop hop beats is met with suggestions to engage in oral sex. Something does need to change.
Our music is better than theirs. We as fans probably aren’t much better than them. We should be. This platform is an opportunity to be. Notwithstanding my disagreement with some of the finer points, Trigger is putting his time, money, and effort in. We need to quit being holier than thou, at least towards each other, and stop consuming this stuff for free. We need to find a way to do our part so there’s a reason for this music to continue to be made in its purest form with minimal need for the overhead. How we go about doing that should be a recurring discussion until the problem gets solved.
Sorry again for the long post. I may throw in the towel here pretty soon so, I figured perhaps one final rant was in order. Can’t really comment on the part I don’t care about but, who cares about any of that anyways? We really shouldn’t.

Andrew,
You make some good points. Our kind of music isn’t likely gonna ever be mainstream again, that’s reality. You mention that the Americana thing is ok by you, and that’s something I’ve been wrestling with internally for awhile. I’m one of the middle ager’s here who grew up hearing great mainstream country. Folks like Haggard, Nelson, Jones, Jennings, Bocephus, Dolly, Reba , etc were all still making hits when I was listening. It was a pretty great era to grow up in. Then later, I discovered the other stuff, the alt-country, and the rockabilly revival stuff as well as bluegrass. So at first Americana seemed to be my niche. But, my how it’s evolved. Now, political party matters greatly to Americana people, and it’s all focused on diversity , race, sexuality and other divisive factors. It’s not about rewarding the best music anymore. And much of the great country artists of this era are being ignored in favor of satisfying the PC agenda. A real shame. This is partly why Dale Watson came up with the Ameripolitan thing, which I support, although it’s realistically a very small niche community thus far. I am encouraged to see the Red Dirt movement gaining traction, so that’s a win for real country fans IMO. What does annoy me though, is that great classic country is being ignored by radio at least in my area, which used to have numerous country stations. It’s like a whole swath of country music never existed. Sad when you consider how much great music is being lost while classic rock never dies.
As for SCM, Kyle is a one man op, doing all he can. Yeah, some of the regulars here think country music is defined by Simpson and Childers almost entirely, that’s so short-sighted IMO. Hopefully some of these characters will get curious and watch the Ken Burns documentary and start learning what country music is all about. As for the pop country, folks like we have commenting here, they don’t bother me in the least. I get some laughs out of them.

Is Kyle Trigger? If so, I agree he’s totally immune from my criticisms of us here. Definitely not frustrated with the site and the well thought out among us. Frustrated by the fact the least thoughtful among us seem to be the ones making reckless rude comments to both the “outsiders” and the thoughtful fans on the inside. I identify with the site, I identify with the site’s owner/operator (save for 1% where reasonable minds can disagree), I cannot identify with this community as, unfortunately, I rarely hear from people who actually think, such as yourself. Such is life I suppose. I guess I just expected better given the quality of the music. I would’ve expected those who recognize how great this music was and is to be better than we are. It is sad that so many of us seem to simply want drugs and profanity in their country. Not sure how Trigger deals with “us” regularly. Not sure I’d want to give my music to this audience anymore even if money was good.

Lots of good stuff in here. Lots of stuff I would quibble with, but the overall point stands: if we care, put up or shut up.
A community is only sustainable if people care enough to sustain it, and caring means time (to see shows), money, and supporting its continuity. If we fail in any of those, the thing will eventually collapse.
It’s a point that has bothered me for years: to cultivate something always requires some kind of sacrifice. It seems so many people are unwilling to sacrifice something to keep something else going, but at the front of the line of blame should always be ourselves. This should keep us all humble, and keep us going. I’m inclined to think that humility and continuity are deeply related.
AndrewEsq, I’d offer one bit of advice as an Older Person. In my experience, anger is almost always a sign that something has been hurt. Country music as it has been has suffered a world of hurt at the hands of people who only see dollar signs and think the signs all point to “pop.” As Honky (one of the angriest guys around here) says, it is both wrong and insulting to serve people who have been eating corn all their lives a heaping helping of tofu and then insisting it’s Corn That Has Evolved. That is pure manipulative horseshit, and everyone knows it. It’s not just an offense against country people: it’s an offense against the truth part of “three chords and the truth.” It goes against the grain of everything that makes country music valuable.
It might be worth your time to consider how much that hurts. And it doesn’t just hurt us, it hurts all music, which has to be based on honesty of life as it’s lived, if nothing else.

How would you define country music, Emma? Definitions matter… Most people here would argue Taylor Swift was hardly ever country at all. Some trademarks of country music include steel guitar (typically with a C6 tuning), fiddle, twangy guitars… We can slowly start taking some of these elements away, sure. But then, we still don’t have a definition for what country music is when we take all these things away. Is it Chris Stapleton? Kane Brown? Dan+Shay? What elements do any of these have in common?

We may need to invent a new music category to ease the confusion- Shitty R&B. I think Kane has a chance there.

One has to wonder.. If many of these defenders of KB have ever heard music they couldn’t dial in on their FM radio. To each their own, I reckon, but it seems you should try all of the flavors before claiming Sherbet is the best ice cream.

Alright… thanks to this post I listened to my first Kane Brown song… no thanks. It’s not that it’s bad… just way too much electronic mumbo jumbo and voice synthesis for me, which is why I don’t listen to “modern” country. It’s Just not what I consider country. It’s pop…. as the genre is as the name suggests… popular contemporary music. The bigger issue, as I see it, is an artists rant over failing to receive a participation acknowledgement.. That already says he isn’t country. Its personified by being humble, respectful, and appreciating what you do have. I’d rather listen to AC/DC and rock out, than listen to that and have my ears confused by the tingy computer noises in his voice. I

That’s a helluva lot of stupid jammed into a lot of all-caps, misspelled words and incoherent sentences.

The problem with country, more so than any other genre (even pop), is that it’s defined by a clichéd aesthetic. You put a cowboy hat on a model with a drawl, record him crooning a lyric sheet about beer and dirt roads written by a team of songwriters from New York City, then it’s emailed to a slick producer in Nashville who clicks “twangy guitar preset #3” and you have a hit country record. To paraphrase Malcom from Jurassic Park, the problem with country superstardom is that it “doesn’t require any discipline to attain it.” I like this genre and have found a lot of great traditional acts here on Saving Country, but modern country has no integrity. Which is why no one can seem to differentiate what’s real and what’s pop.

Mike & the MUTHA Fuckin MOONPIEs are the Real fuckin Holyfield of todays true Country music… here in Texas we know these guys by first name basis and trust me they are real life modern day country boys who sing and have more talent in their band than any nose bleeding mommas boy country rocker. These guys will fight and shoot theirway out of a bar fight if they have to… not many other weak nashville acts come from the bottom up. All the moompies come from deep south texas and east texas roots where youre born tough! Not just muscles its a state of mind!
