Kane Brown Fans Sound Off After Saving Country Music Criticism
On May 3rd, Saving Country Music published an article outlining how Kane Brown had confirmed that a remix he participated in with pop star Camila Cabello on her song “Never Be The Same” was simply a way to push the song further up the charts, while he also issued a snide “Calm down Memaw” remark to people showing concern that the remix would be sent to country radio. With so many pop stars and pop/country collaborations heading to country radio these days, the issue has been a big concern in 2018.
Last week a Kane Brown fan group decided to pounce on Saving Country Music for the article, calling it slanderous and “fake news,” and apparently reporting it to Facebook en masse. It’s difficult to determine what may be considered fake news about the article since a tweet from Kane Brown himself was the source of much of the information. It’s also a little strange the angry mob passed over another article posted five days later defending Kane Brown after it was revealed he didn’t want to participate in a creepy moment on the ACM Awards with Lauren Alaina, or a song review posted on the same day (June 10th) the angry mob decided to go after the Kane Brown/Camila Cabello story that was over a month old.
But regardless, in the interest of equal time and giving everyone a forum to voice their grievances, Saving Country Music has decided to post the six messages received from angry Kane Brown fans via the site’s Facebook page here. These aren’t fake, and these aren’t a selection of the messages. These are all the messages presented in order.
Saving Country Music wants everyone to know we encourage criticism from readers and the public, and are committed to sharing dissenting viewpoints.

Grammar and spelling issues aside (especially since mine isn’t perfect either) they need to learn how to compose a compelling argument. For instance, if the SCM article did get facts wrong, it would be helpful to specifically address those facts. Emotional ranting isn’t an argument.
The fans of EVERY musician have to understand that not everyone will share their enthusiasm. In particular, a website dedicated to preserving country music is not likely to be supportive of acts that harm country music.

Mainstream country radio now is aimed at dumb soccer moms running errands in their SUVs who want to hear pretty boys with a southern twang singing adult contemporary pop-rock.
Cobra
June 18, 2018 @ 9:51 am
Honestly, the era of “soccer mom country” was more the early 2000s. Now, we’ve even passed the height of the era of bro-country, and now it’s just wanna-be urban R&B (and if urban R&B is what people like and want to listen to, great, let them enjoy it, just don’t call it country).
.
It’s sad to say that the Rascal Flatts type soccer-mom country looks pretty damn good compared to what we’ve got now. (Not calling it good, just comparatively speaking).)
kristofer hitchcock
June 18, 2018 @ 11:07 am
Agreed! I used to argue that the 25-40 yr old woman consumer is who drives the creativity in Nashville, but I don’t even know any soccer moms that listen to this crap.
Wade
June 18, 2018 @ 11:51 am
Mainstream country radio’s target demographic is still 25-50 year old women just like it was in the early 2000s. Soccer mom types, basically. And in callout research, women usually prefer to hear male singers rather than female singers (i.e. they rate female singers’ songs lower than male listeners rate those songs). You might be surprised how much 25-50 year old soccer moms love bro-country sung by pretty boys. They’ll go for bro-country arena rock and they’ll go for Keith Urban adult contemporary popsie wopsie crap.

June 18, 2018 @ 2:00 pm
It’s funny all the ages you guys are throwing around because here in Chicago I was listening to one of our 2 stations the other day for a few minutes on a very short trip and what sounded like a 12 yr. old girl named Brianna “called in one the air” to ASK when she had to call in to win Dan Does Shay tickets they were giving away. My first thought was has it become so ridiculous that all these stations care about is a female audience ages not 25-50 but closer to 10 to 35?….lol It’s Bubble Gum Pop/Count radio aimed squarely at the Mom/daughter combo. Honestly, I don’t even see how any men that like real Country music can stand listening to this garbage as they launched into the same shit Dylan Scott song they probably just played 90 minutes ago.

You now can report any post on Facebook as being harassment or fake news pretty easily, and there is a possibility that if enough people report something, the post could be taken down, the Saving Country Music Facebook page could either be restricted, shut down, or have to go through a verification process. But if it’s all the same people from a specific Kane Brown Facebook group reporting on a particular piece of media, it won’t be enough. Stan armies try to shut down rival Facebook pages or groups with this tactic all the time. Though there are exceptions, the content truly has to be fake or libelous for it to get taken down. This is one of the reasons I’ve virtually ceased posting purposely fake news stories for sarcasm, because someone could use it as an opening to report Saving Country Music as a fake news site.
Ultimately I’m going to say what I want, and what I believe. If a fan army wants to try and destroy me, try away. It won’t affect my freedom of speech.

I am a fan. I am well educated and hard working. I think that maybe the unintelligent individuals here are the ones who think it is perfectly fine to judge and criticize others (as if your opinion truly matters). I think that he has a respectable job. He is trying to do his best and we should encourage this young man as he continues to try to make an honest living. How many professionals in the spotlight drink and drive, sell drugs and/or are arrested for participating in other illegal activities?Yet people look to them as role models. Come on folks… seriously… This world we live in is hard enough as it is and all we have is each other. If someone is trying to make an honest living don’t you think we should encourage it? And if we are to look at those who are criticizing him, what faults would we find in you? Do you really want to know? Who are we to judge others? That is not our job. This is just something to think about.
Fuzzy TwoShirts
June 19, 2018 @ 4:50 am
People who lie about their work do not have respectable jobs.
If I ran a Taco Bell but didn’t serve tacos I wouldn’t have a respectable job. I’d be a liar.
Kane Brown makes pop music, calls it Country, and insults people who know better.
I guess that’s only respectable to people like you.
And as somebody with a music theory degree who teaches classes at music festivals and works at a music school, won a fiddling championship and has been playing Country Music since I was sixteen
I can, will, and intend to judge anyone who screws up Country Music.
subsequently my opinion actually does matter more than other people’s because I have all the information and relevant experience.
Stop trying to take Country Music away from people who loved it since the sixties and just go be fans of pop music and let us have our thing

This looks to me as one person or maybe two people still in middle school (or suffer from that mentality) who are obsessed with a false persona. I feel sad that they aren’t mature enough to understand what they are saying. Their only punishment should be to find out what their “hero” really is in real life. Who knows, Kane Brown may be a really nice guy underneath all this Pop garbage, but that’s the funny thing about Pop music: at anytime, it can go “POP” and fizzle really quick. Then where will he and others like him be standing when it’s all said and done? I mean, how many times have you heard anyone over 15 years of age say that a song from Kane Brown is their absolute favorite song in the world? I haven’t heard one person and I was being generous saying 15 years of age too. My apologies for this rant, but that is my 2 cents.

False.
Music, Arts are a form of expression, I agree. When you label your work to a specific genre (in this case country music) then we have every thing right to critize your work when it doesn’t belong to country music.
Let’s say that I compose the song Thunderstruck and play it just like AC/DC but I label it Salsa & Merengue ? The question is not the merit of releasing a song such as thunderstruck but rather the fact that it is labeled “Salsa & Merengue”.
When it is released to the public (that’s what Kane Brown is doing), the public has the right to critize and to reject something that has nothing with the genre.

I learned to stop complaining a long time ago. It’s a decades old issue that pretty much all MAINSTREAM music is garbage. I personally enjoy a song from Kane Brown because it makes me think of my wife. Other than the one song I could definitely do without the guy. It’s not necessarily an “artists” fault that sheeple gobble up these laundry list, generic, poppy “songs” it’s definitely a “people” problem. Times have changed big time. Good enough, or acceptable, is the new norm in the music industry. The only thing we can do is to continue to support real artists, REAL musicians, by buying their music, going to their shows, and save the effort spent complaining/ channel said effort into supporting our favorite non-mainstream artists.

I think all y’all need to get a fucking life what kane brown is doing is his job just like the rest of us, truck drivers deliver, postal workers deliver your mail, and what ever u do as a job is ur job, this is a free country so back the fuck off and let the man do what he wants and dreams of u don’t fucking like it then don’t fucking listen to it

Somehow I get the idea that “what ever u do as a job is ur job” involves french fries, and while I’ve got you, why can’t you ever get the extra ketchup in the bag?
Free country indeed, please feel free to ask your boy to make better music, good talk, thanks!

doing his job like the rest of us?
Do you live in a world in which people routinely lie about their work?
See here’s the thing:
in your analogy, the postal worker isn’t delivering my mail.
the postal worker delivered a watermelon, told me that mail had evolved, and if I didn’t like it I didn’t need to use the postal service.
The truck driver didn’t drive a truck, he flipped burgers and told me that trucks evolved.
Kane Brown doesn’t make Country Music and says he does.
That’s called dishonesty.
And in this free Country, people who sell products that advertise things they don’t do or don’t deliver are fined for false advertising.

Until we live in a world in which a variety of bell peppers get to be called beets, and a variety of old newspaper clippings are a butternut squash, or a variety of serving spoons get to be called acne creams, your ridiculous argument that a variety of styles of music that are not Country are Country is and remains ridiculous and wrong.
If it’s not Country Music, it isn’t.
Just like the Mackinac Bridge isn’t the Golden Gate Bridge.
It’s not something that is open to debate or interpretation.
it’s reality.

Waylon and Willie were an example of country music changing for the better. Kane Brown is an example of country music dying a fiery and explosive death as it regresses into rap music for white people who are afraid of black people.

Music doesn’t change.
The Blue Danube isn’t magically in a different time signature all of a sudden.
Axl Rose didn’t magically become a tenor instead of a baritone one day.
You can’t just say that something changed into something else.
Spinach Kopita doesn’t randomly spontaneously turn into Jello Salad.
Country Music didn’t turn into pop music.
it got replaced with pop music and a lot of people are steamed about it.
So here’s an idea:
take your pop music, take your pop music loving friends, and do pop music things and leave Country Music alone.
you go your way, let us go ours, and we won’t disagree as much.

Lola, since you since you seem to care about this subject enough to keep coming back to reply, why don’t you first try understanding what you are so confidently stepping into the middle of. There have been a few posters here who were initially pop country fans and upset about the criticism of it. However, through this site they discovered artists that are so much better and deeper than the garbage you are force fed from big money labels/radio/spoitfy. Find the page that says “Album of the year nominations” from this site. Listen to those albums (a few times). Then think about the fact that these artists are leaps and bounds better than bro/pop/ radio “country” and yet both the industry and uninitiated listeners such as yourself rarely get a chance to discover them – and thus they REALLY have a hard time making ends meet. Though some posters can be crude (sometimes myself included), this isn’t about randomly picking on a pop artist. People here just have a problem with this, Sam Hunt, FGL, etc. being classified country and displacing opportunity for much more honest and talented COUNTRY artists. People who show up and post here without any real context or understanding of the criticism or the artists that are supported here, and just say things like “butthurt,” don’t come across the way they may hope. Regardless of how fired up

If this isn’t an indictment of the last 40 years of progressive education and group think in pop culture marketing, I don’t know what is.
It’s fascinating that young people so tribally defend a pop star that they don’t know, based only on his music talent in such a vociferous manner.
Instead of making an overwrought post about his fans, I’ll keep it simple:
You’re all fucking stupid.

Somebody said above how country radio has become a “soccer moms and their daughters” format. Basically they play songs moms and their daughters can sing along to in the car. I think the idea behind it is women do 70% of the consumer spending in America, so most radio is aimed at women for advertising reasons. It looks like Kane Brown is aimed at the daughters, while Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney are aimed at the moms. Sugarland could fit for both mom and daughter since they are pop-country, emphasis on the pop.

When I was writing songs in Nashville, we literally had meetings, memos, breakout sessions and classes about writing for this target market, and stats from experts and economists about how long the average American woman will listen to a new song before changing the station. I could rant about all the things we were “taught” (change your drum beat or chord structure within :25 seconds, hit your chorus by :48 seconds, when your 2:00 wall hits, break down the rhythm to make it feel like it changed, etc), but the point is that it became a complete recipe, not an idea. Not a song, a sales pitch.

I like the one that claims “Kane Brown” has a billion fans, as if one out of every eight people on the planet enjoys Kane Brown’s music. It’s sort of tough to believe that right now, at this very moment, there’s some remote village in the Andes where Kane is revered as a god, but there you go.
Speaking of which, I just had to check him out to see what all the fussin’ and the feudin’ is about. No one can deny he fills a major void, as the bro/nu-country scene has been struggling with a real dearth of hunky tight-shirted twangy tattooed crooners singing about banal subject matter over a generic laboratory-generated feather-lite “country” melody and computer-generated beat. It’s almost like how Pus Vomit filled a gaping maw in the goregrind scene and somehow managed to not be superfluous or totally unnecessary at all in the process. I’m sure all those loyal Kane fans won’t be forgetting all about him for a solid two, even three more years at least.
