Margo Price Resets Album Release Date, Issues New Song
Margo Price was ready to issue her third studio album That’s How Rumors Get Started May 8th on her new label of Loma Vista Records. But like some other titles, the decision was made to delay the release due to the uncertainty around COVID-19. Now it’s been announced that the record will be released on July 10th, and a new song and video called “Letting Me Down” accompanies the news (see below).
“This album is a postcard of a landscape of a moment in time. It’s not political but maybe it will provide an escape or relief to someone who needs it. Sending love to everyone out there and hope I see you down the highway,” says Price, who worked with Sturgill Simpson as a co-producer on her first record after exiting Third Man Records.
The new Margo album was recorded in 2017 in Los Angeles, and Sturgill chose to forgo Margo’s touring band for a set of studio musicians that included Matt Sweeney on guitar, drummer James Gadson, Pino Palladino on bass, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench.
“Letting Me Down” is the third song Margo Price has issued from the new record, and like the previous two, it was co-written with husband Jeremy Ivey. The video for the song was directed by Kimberly Stuckwisch who drove all the way from Los Angeles to Nashville to film the video during the pandemic, pulling a self contained travel trailer behind so they wouldn’t have to risk making stops in hotels or restaurants. It was shot in Margo Price’s home and an abandoned hospital.
Margo Price also issued an 11-song live album from the Ryman on May 21st called Perfectly Imperfect from the Ryman recorded in 2018 for the benefit of the COVID-19 Relief Fund. It includes guest appearances by Emmylou Harris, Sturgill Simpson, and Jack White.

That’s the best Stevie Nicks record I’ve heard in years.
All kidding aside, I love it!

But how can it be, when it was her band playing?

The fact that she felt the need to mention “It’s not political” in her press release makes me wonder if she has read and listened to some of the criticism she has received around these parts.

Well, she possibly felt compelled to say it is not political precisely because she has been political with a definite liberal bias. Nothing wrong with that. She has as much right to be liberal as Hank Jr. has being conservative.
But her need to make that statement “possibly” reveals that she wants to reach a wider audience and for that to happen she needed to preface her release with that comment.
Who knows really. Listened to the song posted here. Can’t hear the frickin’ words. I hear noise sounding like it is coming from a tunnel as far as the production goes. I will take a pass.

Sounds like maybe she learned from Kacey Musgraves and wants to just make music.
A bit bland sounding, but harmless. Only country by association, lot more 80s rock, but not bad.

This song is pleasant. Kind of a jingle-jangle country rock sound. Sort of a Tom Petty vibe and no surprise with Benmont Tench aboard. Surprised Sturge produced this. As soon as i read that , I thought, oh great its gonna be a female version of Sound and Fury, ha ha!
But, nope its actually pretty decent and I like the melodic guitar work on this immensely. Her voice, while not earth shaking, has a sweetness to it that sucks you in. If the rest of the record is similar, this could be a winner.
Her past records have bored me, but this one has potential. I’d like to hear more.

So far none of these new tunes are doing it for me. They all sound too much like Tom Petty or Stevie Nicks. I liked the sound she had on her first two albums. Country with a little rock and funk.

She played that live at Farm Aid last year and I have had it on my phone ever since .Didn’t like her second album and have been put off by her politics ,but i love that song.

…how the fuck did Sturgill manage to make her voice sound thin???
She’s got powerhouse vocals.
I’ll spend my money on the live record.

Rolling Stone didn’t pay for the production or distribution of it, CBS did.

Ugh…another Yankee comes to Nashville to pretend she’s country. Needs to grab Whiny Young by the hand and head north, or better yet to Goofywood. A southern man don’t need her around anyhow, to paraphrase you know who.
