Meghan Patrick Twists Off On Fan Who Screams “Show Me Your T*ts!”
WARNING: Language
Traditionally-leaning Canadian country music artist, Warner Music Canada signee, and reigning Canadian Country Music Awards Female Artist of the Year recipient Meghan Patrick was headlining the Hagersville Rocks Music Festival Saturday night (7-27) in Ontario when some smart ass in the crowd thought it would be cute to yell, “Show me your tits” at the stage. Probably hoping to hear a few chuckles from his buddies and then guzzle some more Molson Ice, the concertgoer was instead made an example of when Meghan Patrick stopped down the show and asked for the crowd lights to come up.
“I did not fucking work my whole entire life, and be broke, and it’s sad to have some dipshit drunk in the audience tell me to show him [my] tits! This isn’t a fucking strip club, get the fuck out!” Meghan said to the heckler. Then yanking the wireless microphone off the stand and strutting across the stage, she continued, “If you’re here to see country music, and honesty, and stories, and have some beers and have a good time, you are welcome here. But that shit is not fucking welcome here, I work too damn hard motherfucker. Fuck you!”
The crowd roared in support of the singer as she called herself the “Queen of saying things I shouldn’t say” while launching into the next song. Meghan Patrick elaborated on the situation in an Instagram post the next day.
Ok, I’m about to get really real here for a second. I’m gonna use some choice words, and probably some run-on sentences because I got a whole 30 mins of sleep last night and I’m exhausted… not sorry. More days than not, I’d say I feel confident in my ability to do this for a living, and do it well. But some days, It breaks me a little. Last night I got to headline Hagersville Rocks… it’s an incredible festival run by great people, in a great town, and I’d been seriously looking forward to it. The night started out with a great interaction with a particular fan in the crowd, so I want to shout out to Ian, my drinking buddy. You were so energetic, positive, respectful, and singing every word, and it made me so happy. In fact, I saw a lot of happy, enthusiastic faces out there last night, even if it was less than I’d hoped, due to our very delayed late set.
Then, in the midst of that incredible high…I hear someone obnoxiously yelling out “show me your tits” from the crowd. I saw red. I stopped playing and asked for the lights to be put on the crowd, and demanded that whoever said it, own up to it. He was quickly pointed out to me, so I told him to get the fuck out. Despite the incredible roar of the crowds support, the situation still broke my heart a little. This is not a hobby. This is my livelihood, my heart and soul. I give everything I have into the songs I write and my performances. To have something that means so much to me be degraded to that? Fuck that. And fuck the guy who said that. I have worked my ass off for a long time to get to the point where I earned a headlining slot. I EARNED it. And I deserved a hell of a lot more respect than that. Moral of the story… be like Ian. Or I will call your pathetic ass out and send you home, because I can, and because fuck you. On a positive note: words can’t describe my appreciation for the incredible audience that did stay for the long haul and partied with me after a very long, very hot day. Thank you, You guys rock.
Meghan Patrick’s experience not only speaks to the type of offensive behavior many women performers face, but also the dedication many of them show to the genre and the music, often without receiving the amount of recognition they deserve. Meghan Patrick is one of the few who’s succeeded.
Patrick’s two albums Grace & Grit and Country Music Made Me Do It are a combination of traditional country influences with sensible country pop songs—a mixture many of America’s country radio stars could learn from. Patrick has recorded songs like “George Strait” and “A Long Way From Waylon,” and others songs that definitely show a loyalty to country music’s roots, while also finding commercial acceptance in Canada with more radio friendly material.
One side note to the story, Meghan Patrick recently moved to Nashville, and her current boyfriend is none other than the notorious pop Bro star Mitchell “Bitches” Tenpenny—nicknamed forever with the derogatory term for a female dog because of his aggressively misogynistic song “Bitches.” Perhaps Mitchell has reformed, and perhaps Meghan Patrick was the one who reformed him. But if not, there’s arguably no other mainstream country artist at the moment who needs a good talking to about how to speak about women than Mr. Tenpenny.
Meghan Patrick’s latest single “Wild As Me” has more drum machine action than is to be desired, and is looking to be her big breakout in the United States. Released in June, it is licensed for United States distribution through Music Row record label Riser House, which is the same label Mitchell Tenpenny is signed to. But regardless of what she sings, she deserves respect from all audience members. In this instance, it was Meghan Patrick who got the last word.
@MegPatrickMusic , she’s just setting the record straight. Amen! So proud of her! Had to be said. pic.twitter.com/LZYT1gAhXn

It is about the boyfriend, and a trend I have noticed in general of how attention is OK when the guy in question is attractive to a female but his attention is heinous when they are not.
The guy in question who shouted the comment is a scumbag.

I don’t think any woman wants that kind of vulgar attention when she’s working. I don’t really think any woman wants that kind of de-personalized, demeaning attention anytime. Perhaps in a smaller setting, what you’re saying could be true. Being stared at, or propositioned, or even just complimented by someone you’re not interested in could be uncomfortable depending on how it’s done and the vibes that come with it. I can see how that might feel personal to a guy who senses a personal rejection there but rather than take it personally perhaps consider that millennia of downright poor or non-existent boundaries of many men toward women, to the point of being dangerous has more to do with it than any judgement or personal rejection of the man in question. This strays from the subject, but if a man is just being friendly with no other implications and the woman reacts badly, that’s on her and should not be taken personally.

Good for her calling out the scumbag.
One quibble, I don’t see how dropping George Strait and Waylon in song titles is showing loyalty to country music’s past. Every ‘country’ signer does the same. Mention Ernest Tubb or Roy Acuff and that is worth the sentence.
Trigger
July 30, 2019 @ 9:17 am
I was just using those two titles as examples of how Meghan Patrick is not Canada’s version of Kelsea Ballerini, which you might conclude at first sniff. I listened to her 2016 album “Grace & Grit” pretty extensively because I considered reviewing it. And though there was still a little too much pop for my taste, for what is basically a top tier radio star in Canada, it also had quite a bit of twang and “grit.” If you pull that album up and listen to songs like “Be Country With Me” and her duet with Joe Nichols “Still Loving You,” you’ll see what I mean. This isn’t Maren Morris. Meghan Patrick has some really good country material.

I wouldn’t say that I’m recommending her music, though I’m not NOT recommending her music either. I just felt it was important to set the context of who she is in country music because a lot of folks probably don’t know, especially in the United States. She has some pretty good songs. But she also has a lot of pop country songs that may be a turn off to some people. What I do feel strongly about is that she takes country music seriously, and has dedicated her life to it as she said in her stage rant.

such a strange ( ridiculous) scenario in so many contradicting ways .
hopefully as she matures will realize that you only bring more attention to that guy by pointing him out than you really want to . AND you look weak and out-of-control when it turns into a rant and takes away from the experience EVERYONE ELSE HAS PAID FOR. You’ll never win an argument with a drunk and you’ll ever ‘convert’ someone by barking at him through a microphone in front of others .
I’m a meghan fan ….great voice ( songs …hmmm ? ) but GREAT voice . a foul mouth is and will always be a turn-off , in my book ( I know ..”who cares what you think , albert “) and does more to alienate potential fans than endear you to them . if you don’t think dolly , miranda , reba , martina , trisha , loretta , patty or most every other female ( or male ) vocalist hasn’t heard these kids of remarks in a lifetime on stage , get real . there was also NO poit to meghan going online with this stuff outside of creating publicity for herself and displaying her inability to control her own emotions in a VERY trump-like manner . get professional , meagan , deal with it …….you brought yourself down to the jerk’s level by going at it with him . i’m not saying you don’t have a right to your feelings and to respect . but there’s a time and a place to go off and it wasn’t there …..unless you hoped to gain some publicity from it .

This sucks, obviously, but I hate when artists respond to hecklers with anger or soap box diatribes and the show just sort of goes off the rails for a while. I’ve seen male artists fly off the handle on hecklers. Even though he crowd usually eats it up, I think it’s a bad look.
I’d say it’s the same for female artists, despite the hecklers arguably saying worse and more offensive things. Instead of an angry response, I wish artists would just deliver quick witty burns and move on with the show. Like, Meghan could’ve just said something like “I’ll show my tits if you show everybody in this room you tiny pecker” or “can somebody take this prick out of here and kick his ass for me right now, so I can get on with the show?” No soap box, no long diatribe, just a quick comment to put them in their place and move on with the show.
This is why stand-up comedians are the best at dealing with hecklers. Don’t heckle somebody who can burn you and make a room full of people laugh at you.
Gena R.
July 31, 2019 @ 8:30 am

She comes off as classless as the heckler. When you use your looks and a little cleavage to sell your mundane county-pop music and your goofy boyfriend’s nickname is “Bitches”, things like this are bound to happen. I’m all for artists dressing however they like and as provocatively as they like, but I also expect them to realistically understand the image they’re projecting and be able to handle themselves and not cry foul or play victim when it provokes a response.
Best way to get even is just let your talent as an artist shine through.

I hate to break it to you honey, but if your career is based on selling your image, people are going to treat your persona like an object.
On a side note, I’m getting tired of artists telling me about their hard work and sacrifice. Seriously, ditch it. I also get it from contractors who fail to deliver ‘you can’t blame me, I was working until midnight, I’m losing money on it etc.’ and to both of them: Not my fault if you suck at running your career.

Tex Hex

That’s a bit of a leap in logic. Nobody is saying it was cool, or that she deserved it – much less implying she should be raped.
I think the consensus is she’s a performer with a sexualized image, and a large portion of her audience is going to be drunk male assholes. Dumb comments or heckling from a couple of ‘em is virtually inevitable, so it’s do her well to adapt – either silence them with killer talent or some good burns to shut them up.
Again, it’s obviously not cool, and she doesn’t deserve that sort of treatment, but performing is tough no matter what gender, so it’s a good idea to toughen up. Plenty of great female performers with sexualized images punch through this bullshit with sheer talent. You don’t think Dolly got shitty heckling at first, but look who’s a legend, with more money than god, living in a mansion now?

Respect must be another one of those words with a very different defintion to some these days. She talked about her work being degraded by his drunken remark. I think she sadly has done as much, or more, to degrade herself than a stupid remark from an anonymous drunk in the audience.
I’m left wondering how much was accomplished by her actions with regard to actual respect.
Don’t know whether her music is good or not. Her unfortunate rant made me have zero interest in getting to know one way or the other.

holy SH*T I know she was wearing a semi-showy dress but that did not give him the right to say something like that to her.

Hey Trigger – you check out her new album, “Heart On My Glass”?
Okay, the opening (also title) track starts off with a click/clap percussion track, but it quickly drops that and turns out to be a well written song. And the remainder definitely has its pop and rock elements, and has a few listy moments, but on balance it’s a damn fine modern country album. The writing definitely covers classic Country territory, and makes some smart turns of thoughts and phrases. You can’t help but root for the narrator in places.

I’ll have to check it out. Have not heard or seen anything about the new album, and had no idea it was out.

If he can’t say anything nice about somebody don’t say it at all because women should be treated with respect because women are not pieces of meat for men to enjoy women should be treated with respect.
