Merle Haggard to Appear on Outlaw Radio
That’s right, don’t rub your eyes or go hunting for your glasses. The one and only Merle Haggard is going to be on Outlaw Radio Chicago this Wednesday night (2-17-10) at 8 PM CENTRAL. It can be heard on scrubradio.com live, and if you miss it, the episode will be posted right here at savingcountrymusic.com/outlaw-radio.
Sometimes I think that Merle Haggard isn’t given his proper due by some. We hear about Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, but Merle has been slinging out REAL country music and doing it his way for just as long. And he’s not afraid to tell it like it is either, like when he confronted CBS executive Rick Blackburn:
“Who do you think you are? You’re the son-of-a-bitch that sat at that desk over there and fired Johnny Cash. Let it go down in history that you’re the dumbest son-of-a-bitch I’ve ever met.”
And Merle continues to put out great music. One of my favorite tunes from him is one of his newer ones. When Merle grabs that mic stand and gets into it, he can be one of the most engaging crooners country music has ever seen:

Very exciting news. I’m looking forward to seein’ what Merle has to say about the pitiful state of country music nowadays . . .

I completely agree that Merle does not get his due. I feel he is the greatest country music singer of all time. I saw him with my Dad in concert this summer and he sounded right off of the radio. Can’t wait for the interview.

His voice hasn’t waned whatsoever with age. It maybe is even getting better.

Cool video, and that’s ol’ Redd Volkaert on Telecaster there with him. Redd lives and plays out of Austin, TX these days.

I will always be proud of the fact that on the way to a show in Nashville I was arrested in Kentucky while listening to A Merle Haggard greatest hits album.
Some things are just meant to be.
