Mike & the Moonpies Make It on Billy Bob’s Famous Wall of Fame

It’s not exactly the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but down in Texas, it might as well be. Whenever a band becomes a regular at the “World’s Largest Honky Tonk” Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth, it’s customary for them to be added to the venue’s legendary Wall of Fame with the hand prints of the artists forever leaving their mark. Some of the names on the wall include Willie Nelson, Charley Pride, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Garth Brooks, and a bunch of the biggest artists in Texas like Randy Rogers and Robert Earl Keen.

Mike and the Moonpies played a show at Billy Bob’s on July 1st, and from first playing side stage gigs when they were just starting out to now being showcased on the main stage to massive crowds, they have officially earned their paw prints in the famous Billy Bob’s cement, as well as their logo on the wall.

“We’ve been playing at Billy Bob’s Texas for the better part of a decade,” the bands says. “Started with a gig outside in the courtyard on a hot ass Fourth of July weekend and moved on to gigs on the Honky Tonk stage, then opening slots, the great Robert Gallagher’s retirement party (he’s since back in the saddle), and eventually landing headlining spots on the main stage. The first time Robert put us on the main stage we probably brought in 50 tickets. But they kept having us back, each time bigger and better than the last.”

One of the reasons Mike and the Moonpies are one of the greatest live bands in all of country music at the moment is because they cut their teeth at authentic Texas honky tonks like Billy Bob’s for so many years, paying dues, opening for bigger acts, eventually creating their own fan base, and becoming the group that embodies the authentic Texas honky tonk band that so many other bands and artists want to be. They found a champion early on in Robert Gallagher, whose been booking Billy Bob’s since 1982.

“Robert and the Billy Bob’s crew—they’re just on another level,” says Mike and the Moonpies. “They’ve been like kin since the beginning. Rolling in for a show there feels like we’re arriving for a family reunion. When they surprised us last weekend with our name on the wall and our handprints in cement, we were at a loss for words. We can’t express how much this means to us and what an honor it is to now be a part of the building. Billy Bob’s forever!”

This is just one of many accolades that Mike and the Moonpies are finally receiving after years of going under-recognized. On September 6th, they’ll be making their debut on the Grand Ole Opry. Always on tour, they’ve got a slew of new tour dates coming up (see below), and can’t be missed if they’re rolling through your town.
