Patty Griffin Announces New Self-Titled Album
Like a lazy Sunday morning, a Patty Griffin song can frame life perfectly, and put everything into perspective. This gift is the reason artists such as Emmylou Harris, Miranda Lambert, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and the Dixie Chicks have selected her songs to record, and the Grammys have awarded and nominated her efforts over the years.
On Friday, March 8th, Griffin will release what will count as her 10th studio recording, and her first eponymous release when it emerges from PGM Recordings and Thirty Tigers. Recorded primarily at her own house in Austin, TX, it was co-produced with long-time collaborator Craig Ross, and includes contributions from guitarist David Pulkingham, drummer/percussionist Conrad Choucroun, cellist Lindsey Verrill, pianist Stephen Barber, and fellow Band of Joy member Robert Plant, who offers backing vocals on the songs “What Now” and “Coins.”
The album comes after a period on Patty’s life that is described as one of profound personal crisis, including being diagnosed with breast Cancer about two years ago, but ultimately defeating the disease. Ahead of the album, Griffin has made available a song called “The River” (listen below).
“‘Isn’t she a river?’ just kind of came out and the rest sort of followed,” says Griffin. “Sometimes songs are like that. I wasn’t really reaching for anything intentionally – just playing some chords with a feeling inside and there you go.”
Also as part of the release, Patty Griffin will embark on a world tour, starting February 28th in Los Angeles. More info on the tour will be coming soon, and tickets will go on sale January 18th.

I do too. You see a cover like this and it reminds you how cool cover art used to be, and how rare it is to come across a striking cover these days. That’s why I put it right at the top of this article as opposed to a promo photo. It sells you on the record before you even hear a lick.

the cover art is very 60’s…I noticed it immediately
this release will truly be a light in the storm. I love so many singer/songwriters ( Welch , McKenna Richey , Mindy , etc….but Patty is a singer’s singer . this track demonstrates that superbly . chills. .

And it’s going to be released on vinyl–as all great album covers should be (not to mention the music itself).

Me also. Been a fan since I picked up “Living with Ghosts” in Austin in 1996. She is awesome.

This is a nice tune, beautiful singing.
I think I would have liked it more overall, with just voice and acoustic guitar.

Album covers are an interesting bit of pre-suasion (setting the scene to to make you like something when you experience it)
If you like an album cover, and the band name and title, you’re already wanting to like the music. It is a pity that cover art is a dying art.
Love Patty Griffin, definitely will be getting this album

Off topic, what cd suppliers do you guys recommend? Especially in Australia, but worldwide is ok.
I don’t want to support Amazon because i hate monopolies, but none other have the range.
Your help is appreciated

When possible buy direct from the artist. Or the label, if it’s an indie. But large scale, Amazon is the often the only game in town for cds these days. Not too many others even sell them. It seems like it’s easier to find vinyl even lately. Amazon may be a corporate monolith, but at least they are efficient and usually fair-priced.
Truth be told, I’ve given in to the modern world and replaced most purchases with my Apple Music account.

The problem is that small labels and artists have expensive shipping overseas, especially one cd at a time.
I still prefer cds. I’m really bad at organising and i like to know i have a full, organised backup of all music even if it fills a whole room.
Also, data is expensive here, post is cheaper.
I have a ‘local’ music shop thats good at ordering things, but that also gets expensive

I think you’ve answered your own question, my friend. You’ve just got to hold your nose and order from Amazon.

Don’t know about Australia, but in general, the Buy links on SCM earn Trigger a bit of affiliate cash. The link to pre-order Nancy Griffin takes you to hellomerch, which seems to be a decent seller of albums, cd’s, tapes, and memorabilia for a variety of independent artists.
If you’re buying and you have no reason not to, follow the links from SCM to support your favorite blogger.

Easily an early AOTY contender.
