Prediction: Carrie Underwood Wins 2019 CMA Entertainer of the Year
Carrie Underwood will win the 2019 CMA Award for Entertainer of the Year when it is handed out on November 13th, 2019. Mark it down. She will beat out Chris Stapleton, Keith Urban, Garth Brooks, and Eric Church for the top prize of the night, and it probably won’t even be close. This isn’t necessarily an endorsement, nor is it any kind of rebuke. It’s simply a prediction. It will be Carrie Underwood’s night.
This week when CMA voters were working to fill out their ballots, Carrie Underwood’s label Capitol Records Nashville took out full page ads in country music’s major trade periodicals like Country Aircheck and Billboard Country Update touting Carrie Underwood as a “360 Entertainer,” making reference to the “Cry Pretty Tour 360” she’s currently on. Her booking agency AEG also took out a full page ad in Billboard Country Update saying “Hey Girlfriend, here’s our Entertainer of the Year.” Combined with other moves from the Carrie Underwood team, it’s clear a full court press has been called by anybody and everybody involved with Carrie to make this happen in 2019.
On top of this, Miranda Lambert recently gave Carrie Underwood a ringing endorsement. After showing some appreciation for the other Entertainer of the Year nominees, Miranda said,
Carrie- The Entertainer Of The Year. Because… Currently being on tour with all female artists, I’ve been thinking a lot about all the work that goes into what we do. The most amazing job in the world. But it ain’t for the faint of heart. Carrie Underwood is on an all female tour too. The Cry Pretty Tour 360. She put out her first single in 2005 and from then on country music was changed for good. That iconic voice has been classin’ up our stages, charts and televisions for a decade and a half. The Voice. The legs. The songs. The brand. The mom. The wife. The okie. The Jesus lover. The blonde bombshell that is Carrie. She blows me away every time I hear her sing. She never wavers in who she is or what she stands for. She has stayed true & pushed herself to be better. If you have never heard her sing “How Great Thou Art” do yourself a favor and listen … I’ll always have her back. So for the sake of sequins, spanx and spray tans, take it home! You Carrie the torch! 😉#Carrieon #EOTY
Beyond these things, the environment is ripe for Carrie Underwood to finally win country music’s top prize. With all the emphasis on supporting women in country music at the moment, and specifically the CMA’s effort to make women the focal point of the 2019 presentation—including replacing Brad Paisley with Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton as Carrie Underwood’s co-hosts this year—what better way to cap off the night and temper the criticism for country than to give the trophy to Carrie.
This is not to imply that Carrie Underwood doesn’t deserve it. As we’ve seen of the last few years, fair or not, the CMA Entertainer of the Year has become a touring award. After taking a couple of years off to give birth to her second child, Underwood’s current tour has spanned the CMA’s eligibility period almost perfectly, and concludes later this month. And like both Miranda Lambert and the ads promoting Carrie Underwood as the best candidate for the award tout, she’s sold out some major venues during this awards cycle. Her touring purse doesn’t top all others in country, but it is solid, bringing in an estimated $50 million total over the tour, an average of $898,000 dollars a night, and 11,022 tickets per event.
And even though the CMAs are not as susceptible to bloc voting and horse trading due to the expansive nature of the voting population compared to the ACMs, there is still something to be said about the collective will of country music labels, managers, radio, and touring coming together to endorse and support a candidate. At this point, a Carrie Underwood win feels baked in, and if someone like Garth Brooks (the other nominee actively lobbying for consideration), or last year’s winner Keith Urban gets it, the backlash will be boisterous, and arguably damaging to all parties, including whomever wins since they’ll spend more time apologizing for winning over Carrie than celebrating.
And with all due respect to Carrie Underwood, this might her last legitimate opportunity to win the award. She probably won’t be touring next year, and may not tour the year after. Her current singles have shown softness at radio, with “Cry Pretty” topping out at #9, “Love Wins” finishing at #11, and even the radio-friendly “Southbound” stopping at #3 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, though it did get to #1 on Mediabase. That doesn’t mean Carrie Underwood’s run is over and she’s being put out to pasture. But her capacity to win something like Entertainer of the Year is going to continue to diminish as a new generation of artists take their place as the top entertainers of country music in the future. It’s now or never for Carrie, and her likability throughout the industry will translate into votes to make sure she can finally add this award to what will likely be a Hall of Fame career.
If all things were equal, and Entertainer of the Year went to the artist who had the greatest overall impact and success in the genre over a given eligibility period, this award would have to go to Luke Combs who has set the world on fire in country music in 2019. But he wasn’t even nominated, though rest assured, he will be in the coming years. But this year it’s Carrie Underwood’s turn, and there’s many reasons to argue it should be, even if you’re lukewarm on her music, as many true country music fans tend to be. Though some of her radio singles are hard to defend (including her current one “Southbound”), Underwood clearly can sing. She’s always honored her commitments to the Grand Ole Opry while many of her mainstream contemporaries regularly shrug them off. She doesn’t use choreography in her shows and has no need for Auto-Tune. There are worse candidates for country music’s Entertainer of the Year.
Keith Urban doesn’t even deserve to be in the conversation for this award, and it’s a national embarrassment he’s the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year already. Eric Church will have other opportunities, and is a guy whose always coveted Album of the Year awards over everything else. Garth Brooks most certainly continues to prove his touring muscle, but already won the trophy in 2016 and 2017 amid his comeback tour, and it does no good to Garth or country music to give it to him again. Chris Stapleton needs to prove he’s more than the 2015 CMA Awards anomaly before earning country music’s top prize, and over the last couple of years the CMA voting public has soured on giving him every award he happens to be nominated for.
If Carrie Underwood wins, this won’t solve the problems for women in country music. It will just be a symbolic gesture. But it would be a gesture earned, and not just an important gesture for Carrie Underwood, but an important gesture for country music that no matter what situations plague radio, touring, festivals, or anything else, a woman can still be considered the greatest entertainer in a give year, just like Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, The Dixie Chicks, and others have done in the past. And it’s not just because Carrie Underwood is a woman. It’s because Carrie Underwood has earned it.

A different artist from Carrie Underwood has a better tour, is a better performer, and has better songs. A specific artist deserves this award among the nominees. That artist is not Carrie Underwood.
If she wins, it’s woke culture pressure that caused it, not legitimately earning in during this specific award cycle.

It’s weird I used to always think woke meant someone like dale gribble from king do the hill. Someone who saw politics are bullshit because everything is controlled by the nwo and all the parties are the same. Apparently at some point woke just replaced politically correct as the preferred unnecessary euphemism for left wing.
Though if we are talking woke entertainers of the year there’s someone nominated who has actually expressed woke ideas in their music and it’s not Carrie Underwood.

Saw her in concert this week. Heavy on ballads and the crowd sat for the majority of the show. Upper levels didn’t sell, so they were curtained off, and they were upgrading upper level seats to lower level. The sound wasn’t good at all, kind of muddled. The stage and production effects were great, but if your sound isn’t good, it just makes it harder to enjoy. Makes me appreciate guys like Eric Church who don’t rely on any of that stuff and leave the dramatics and can entertain with just their songs.

Absolutely agree. I don’t need all that fireworks and staging to hear great music and I agree with the other list she yells every song, just not my cup of tea.. Miranda endorsed her when in all honestly she is way better than Carrie and puts on an amazing show with just pure talent and artistry and not big production stuff but to each his own. This was actually said in a review as well after Miranda’s show. If one would compare Church to Underwood, well there would be no comparison. On accomplishments, attendance, etc. Church blows her away. Can’t help it he’s a male and she a female. I am not a rabid Church fan, just the facts. They should change the CMA to the SMA for this year. SMA (Statement Music Association) awards.
On a side note, just listened to a previous unreleased “Ben Lonely Too Long” from Marty Stuart’s reissue of The Pilgrim on vinyl. A great single. Has a great groove that stays in its tracks. Worth a listen to.

If Eric Church won Entertainer of the Year, it would be a public relations nightmare for country music, the CMAs, and Eric Church. Eric Church doesn’t even want Eric Church winning Entertainer of the Year. He wants to win Album of the Year. This is what his people will be lobbying for publicly, and telling everyone else to vote for Carrie Underwood as Entertainer.
And of all the other nominees, Eric would be the worst to win it from a PR standpoint. The press will put him up as the pinnacle of braggadocios toxic males embodying everything wrong about country music.

Yes, and the guy who is basically responsible for Ashley McBryde’s mainstream career. I think you can make the case Eric Church has done more for country women than any other top male performer, and I’ve made that case in numerous articles. Here’s one of them:
https://www.savingcountrymusic.com/eric-church-becomes-surprising-champion-of-country-women/
But you have to appreciate the “us vs. them” mentality that has been built into the mentality of many of the people fighting for women in country music, including blue checkmarked “journalists” who will have no clue of Eric Church’s contributions to this effort. To them, he’ll just be another swingin’ D in Aviators.

October 20, 2019 @ 2:57 pm
Trigger I love ya but it’s insane to say Church doesn’t want EOTY. There’s a reason he’s done on stadium show – in Nashville where many voters reside. His double down tour was meant to stand out and generate buzz. I think Church wants it really bad. His tour was a massive success with marathon shows with different covers in each city. I don’t see where it would be a PR disaster.

Look, it’s a prediction and I may be totally wrong. But I honestly don’t think that Eric Church is even a contender. I appreciate that his fans hope and want him to win, and I agree he’s put together a strong year. But I’m just seeing all the stars align for Carrie. Also, I’m basing the fact that Eric doesn’t even really care about Entertainer of the Year on his own words. I’d have to hunt for the interviews, but on numerous occasions after he’s won Album of the Year, he’s said that is what he cares about because it’s a creativity award, not a popularity award. I’m paraphrasing obviously. I think if someone told Eric they’re voting for him for Entertainer, he would tell them to save that vote, and and vote Album of the Year instead.

I agree with you on this. His PR team has gone above and beyond this year to plant the seeds for this Entertainer win. Eric’s team has only invited media to watch the shows of his past tours….but this year he’s had People Magazine and other outlets actually covering and photographing the shows. He’s also upped his social media game with videos of him surprising fans or fans sharing their stories of why they love his music. It’s a more authentic form of marketing rather than just putting ads out, I guess..but it’s obvious that the intent of those videos are to remind voters. His stadium show in Nashville was timed prior to first-round CMA voting…and then he played an all-acoustic set at CMA Fest a few weeks later. A few weeks ago (again I don’t doubt timing wasn’t aligned with voting) he had a number one party celebrating “Round Here Buzz” and “Some of It.” During the party they showed video clips of Tim McGraw, Maren Morris, Keith Urban, and Kenny Chesney all praising Eric. A reminder to industry voters that he has the respect of his peers and fans.

Heard you say that Church doesn’t want to win EOTY on multiple occasions now and I think that is totally false. I believe the guy was pissed because Garth won last year and asked his wife what the hell else he had to do to win it. Truth is Eric Church deserves it. Sad truth is he will be completely blocked out of the award again to someone less deserving.
If he loses this one, he will either stop for awhile and spend time with his family or he will get pissed and work harder. My opinion, but I hope he wins regardless of gender.
Just on a personal note, Carrie does scream way too damn much in her songs, but looks amazing doing it. That hockey player husband is a lucky dude.

I’m not pulling this idea that Eric Church doesn’t want to win Entertainer of the Year out of my ass. I have heard him say on numerous occasions that Album of the Year is what he cares about. If I gave enough of a shit about this subtopic, I’d spend the time to hunt down the quotes or video, but I don’t. The idea that he would completely change around the way he tours specifically to lobby for Entertainer of the Year seems like about the most UN-Eric Church thing he could do. I’m not saying he wouldn’t accept the award if it came to him. I’m also not saying that some members of his team may not be lobbying for it on his behalf. However the entire premise of this article is to lay out with concrete evidence that the team behind Carrie Underwood is doing everything they possibly can to get her the award, and I think they would be more than happy to cede Album of the Year to Eric Church in exchange. There has been NO ads, NO chatter, NO other artists endorsing Church. Also, the calculus might have changed for the Church team once they announced the 2019 CMAs were going to be all about celebrating women, and Carrie Underwood received an Entertainer of the Year nomination.
I’m kind of surprised Eric Church fans think he’s so vain that he cares enough about this award to pursue it so strongly as to have it shape how he tours. But even if he is, its Carrie Underwood’s to lose.
Jacob

Did you see the tribute video to him circulating the web a few weeks back? Dozens and dozens of mainstream artists (and Ray Wylie Hubbard) talking about how big of an influence he is to them and how much they love him as an artist. I’d say those were endorsements.

I don’t know why you say Eric Church doesn’t want Entertainer of the Year. First he has the “Holding My Own Tour” where he plays two sets. Then he has the “Double Down” tour, where he plays 2 sets for 2 nights at each stop. EotY is a “touring” award, and Church has had the best tour in mainstream country for the past 2 years. I don’t know about him actively campaigning for it, but I also don’t know why you say he doesn’t want it.
Trigger
October 22, 2019 @ 9:56 am
Again, I say that because he said that. A few years ago, I remember an interview Eric gave backstage after winning Album of the Year for either “Chief” or “Mr. Misunderstood” at the CMas or the ACMs, and him saying specifically that Album of the Year is the award he cares about because it’s not a popularity contest, it’s for something he’s done. I’ve tried to a little to find the video but can’t find it, and would probably have to dedicate more time to get my hands on it, if it is even still online.
Also, I just don’t see Eric Church shaping his tour to try and win an award. That seems like about the most UN-Eric Church thing Eric Church could do. He did his tours to create the best fan experiences and sell the most tickets possible.
Maybe Eric Church will win. Maybe he does care about Entertainer of the Year now. But I still believe it’s Carrie Underwood’s to lose.
thebugman10
October 23, 2019 @ 4:34 am
I think there’s a difference in him saying he cares more about album of the year and him saying he doesn’t care about EotY at all or that he actively doesn’t want the award at all. But I haven’t watched the video/listened to the full quote.
Trigger
October 23, 2019 @ 9:36 am
Bugman,
I agree. But I also just think it sets up this year for Carrie Underwood to win Entertainer, and because of that, Eric is probably going to focus more on winning Album.
I’m going to have more about this in an upcoming article, but I was finally able to run down one of the clips from him saying Album of the Year is what he cares about the most. This is not the clip I was thinking of so I know there’s more of them out there, and he makes reference to how many times he’s said it, so I can guarantee there’s more instances.
“It’s the one award that … I’ve said many … I got to quit saying it because it’s the only one we win … but it’s the one award I want the most. Album of the Year is the one that’s most special to me.”

Carrie is undeniably talented and she’s made some decent country music, but is that what she’s doing now? I’m not a fan of her latest singles at all. I love her to literal pieces but I have just not been a fan of this current album cycle. The album just doesn’t feel like “her” & it sounds like an album from a new artist, not someone that’s been in the music industry for 14 years.I would love for her to take home EOTY, but if she wins the award it will be because she’s a woman not based on her accomplishments. The award for her would be tainted in my opinion.

I sure in hell would ask to be taken off the ballot if I though I would be winning the EOTY award because it was “my time”, ” I was blonde” or that “I’m a woman” instead of the body of work I released & touring. It would be insulting, so give the award to someone else, thank you.
I totally agree with @liza … Carrie screams her songs out much of the time; Connie Smith has never had to resort to that. And for my listening ears … I’ll take Connie Smith’s version of How Great Thou Art over Carrie Underwood’s any day of the week. For those who have never heard it, please seek it out, it’s worth a listen to. And Connie Smith’s husband, isn’t so bad himself. Marty’s “The Pilgrim” album is still one of the best albums I have heard in the last 20 years. I have it & it is always my go-to country music album (in CD form) to listen to.

She’s the only woman who can even come close to competing with the men and since country music award shows are hardly based on merit, her win shouldn’t be controversial IMO.
There’s no other woman in her league so if it doesn’t happen this year we’re not going to see another woman even nominated for years.

Carrie is among the most amazing and outstanding country singers of all time along with Dolly Reba martina. Miranda is as well a great entertainer and singer of country music.Miranda Ty for the amazing and outstanding praise you gave to Carrie your a good friend.

I have seen Carrie’s show six times from May-Sept. Each show has been very similar, but it’s so perfect there’s no need to change things. She has had enough spontaneity, but the slick production matches her style. I consider shows from people like Garth, Church, Chesney (I know not nominated) to be more of an event, while Carrie puts on more of a performance. I don’t know if the difference can be easily described, but one is more about energy while the other is about pure talent. Both styles are great, but I’d vote for Carrie this time around.

Thats a poorly written article. If you want to take a swipe at Underwood, just do that directly. Don’t try to patronize.
Underwood definitely deserves Entertainer of the Year award because she earned it. Its long overdue.
Haters gonna hate, but thats just cuz their idols cant match Underwood’s level of success.

I really believe Carrie will be crowned The entertainer of The Year for those in Nashville that think she is their Female Gold Star. First she will have to change into one of her Barbie Outfits, come out with her fake tears and act like she is surprised. Maybe they will have legions Reba and Dolly to present her the trophy. I do know Carrie has lots of fans, I just happen to not be among them.

I am a HUGE fan of old country. I have seen all the EOTY nominees in concert. Lets be honest. ERIC CHURCH is amazing and all the other male nominees put on a good show…BUT CARRIE UNDERWOODS concerts are ridiculously great. This woman has a great voice, she has sold out concerts, a number album, southbound just went number one . She deserves the awards. She was ROBBED during the last period when KEITH URBAN won. Her win is long OVERDUE. Sorry!
Theresa Daniels
October 20, 2019 @ 6:14 pm
I love Carrie to pieces but I find the butt kissing by the fans annoying & EXTREMELY unnecessary. She didn’t tour the last album period so how was she robbed of the EOTY award?I love her but you don’t need to kiss up to her.Her label is doing enough of that as it is.Southbound was #1 on one chart & it stalled on airplay at #3 so I don’t know how anyone could consider that a success. Do you work for her label or something?

Theresa. Boohoo. Cry Preety was the number 1 selling album for a female that year across every genre and the highest in country music over the past few years. She is the best representation there is for country music on a global scale.

I can assure you Keith Urban did not rob Carrie Underwood from getting Entertainer!!! He is 3 Xs the entertainer she is!! She has a lot of fans because of her idol fame but she has never had the personality of a true entertainer! I like Carrie and hope she wins this year but Keith Urban deserved his wins and did not rob anyone!! The majority of country music community were rooting and evidently voted for him ( well, maybe with the exception of this site here & it’s followers)!Good luck to Carrie, but don’t attack Keith!

Carrie Underwood deserves to win FVOTY, AOTY and EOTY. All three trophies. Sorry, its her year and she should have won already a long time ago. This woman is the highest certified RRIA artist in terms of singles in country music, her album was amazing, and so is her tour! She needs to get the award or it will just put a negative light on country music that already sucks. Lets face it, apart from her who really represents nashville at any major award shows? Grammys, AMAs and Billboard music awards? Nobody wants to listen to Garth Brooks or Reba sing and bore them away. Thats why Underwood is usually the representive for the past decade as well as the performer!

Vocally she sounds incredible but the lyrical material isn’t up to par for someone that’s been at this for 15 years. And how is it her year again?Sorry, but her album isn’t as amazing as you’re claiming it to be,so cut the kiss up crap. I know she can do so much better work than this current album. Stop being such a kiss up because I know Carrie doesn’t need you to do that for her.

I don’t watch award shows nor do I tend to pay too much attention to who is nominated or who wins. However I do think Carrie is deserving of it.
Part of the reason of my I just don’t care about award shows is because majority of the time the nominations, winners & performers shouldn’t be nominated, win or perform. Majority are simply not country but that’s a whole other issue/ discussion.
Should any of them be nominated? No.
But considering only mainstream is nominated then the answer is yes. Carrie is absolutely deserving.
Does Carrie winning help women? No.
Does it help save country music? No
I actually feel like it doesn’t matter who wins. It’s not a win for the genre. The win is for the individual and for their stans.
I had to look up whose actually nominated. My opinion:
Carrie, Keith & thomas = pop
Jason = bro (pop)
Kacey = I don’t know but not country
Eric = not country but not pop. rock?

I have to agree with Miranda- Carrie has great legs- and she can sing- I’ve heard better renditions of How Great Thou Art though and I’m not sure that qualifies somebody for entertainer of the year in Country Music- but, I’m not sure what does either- Country Music singer should be a prerequisite though.

Carrie was fine before she “fell and hurt herself” and disappeared for a few months. Her new nose and lips look worse than before. She was beautiful and perfect without the unnecessary plastic surgery.
And her latest album was shit. Miranda is being nice. Miranda is 4x the entertainer than the plastic surgery queen.
Eric Church concerts shit on Carrie-okie concerts where she just stands there and bounces up and down.
Her legs are amazing tho.

Let’s be honest Miranda was being nice to herself to try and grab some headlines for her new song release. Miranda is currently being outsold by 7 other women on the charts and her tour is struggling. Why do you think she’s going with an all sausage fest line up for her next tour when she’s been pushing the women promoting women agenda? She needs men on her tour to help sell tickets. Like Carrie or not but she’s the lone woman out there who can compete with the men. If a woman is ever going to win EOTY it has to be Carrie and this year. Like Miranda, Carrie’s career is also on the down slope.

Where can I go to look at the charts for singles, album sales/ streams and touring sales? I read a lot of comments through out this web site regardless of the singer with people citing that type of info but where do you get it? Thanks!
You and Your White Claw
October 21, 2019 @ 9:06 am
Kworb is the place to find sales and streaming data you can also go to Spotify and get the streaming numbers off individual songs. Don’t think Miranda’s team isnt releases box scores for so you have to rely on fans and ticket sale sites. Im a fan of and follow Ashley and there were comments about the low attendance this past weekend. Upcoming shows and it seems past shows have big amount of giveaways and tickets for as low as $6 with large amounts unsold. Not a bad deal for fans but not a great deal for artists I expect.
Melissa W
October 21, 2019 @ 9:43 am
I checked out Korb. So how do I go about seeing how well Cody Jinks record After The Fire placed on the charts or how many units sold for it’s first week?
I read an article this past weekend about the low ticket sales & discounts given. I don’t think her opening acts helped sell tickets although I would think her alone would sell just fine- apparently not. Her opening acts are mostly unknown people. That & I wouldn’t see her with Marren on the ticket. That would ruin it for me, probably others. Having Cody Johnson on her tour next yr will help just as Jon Pardi helped the prior year as those guys are known and popular. Nothing wrong with the help. Better the line up the better the sells.
You and Your White Claw
October 21, 2019 @ 9:56 am
HDD has Cody at 17 112 sales for the week.
I think Maren and Ashley sell well on their own because they play smaller venues. Miranda’s tour plays arenas but they also tend to block off large sections of the venue and of course low tickets prices. I’m not sure what the deal is if she’s struggling because her new music is performing badly or if there’s a fatigue where she is concerned. Another big issue not many people seem to talk about is she’s reached the age where a lot of women in country seem to be put out to pasture. Ageism is another hurdle for women in country that the men don’t seem to struggle with.

Eric church tour is named double down for a reason. He did holding my own and lost and said I’ll double down.
He absolutely wants to win and is hands down the best live show I have been to. I have seen him live 10 plus years and he keeps getting better.
Carrie is stunning and puts on a great show. However, Eric far and away best live concert.

this yr, I’ve seen Ian Noe, Leann Rimes, Whitey Morgan, and Brent Cobb, among others, at their best up close in concert. But I can’t explain why the possibility of sitting in the “cheap seats” for an upcoming Carrie Underwood show in a very large venue has me more excited than those other sets even though I’m pretty sure Carrie’s show won’t be as musically perfect as the others were. Is it hype? sexuality? charisma?

I think it’s between Carrie and Garth too! Not that Garth deserves it this year but they have crush on him or something.
Eric’s tour is a small one, he is playing like only 4 shows per month and that’s it..
And I don’t know what is Keith and Chris doing in this category..?
So all things considered I think Carrie will take it too as she had the most successful year in general and it’s always the face of country music in all genre events. I just feel that the hype for Carrie is huge and she deserves it.

So much has been said about Eric Church’s double down tour. If you compare that to Carrie’s cry pretty tour. Eric averages 2 concerts a week and Carrie about four. Which one averages the most concert attendees per week? That’s right Carrie beats Church by far!
What she has accomplished this year, 4 concerts per week with a baby to feed at 3:00 Am,all of the planning that it takes to host the Cma show in a few weeks, it really is phenomenal!

In all honesty, who will be watching this year’s cma awards???
I mean you know Justin Bieber, Lil Nas X, Sam Hunt, and probably other pop collaborations will happen. I don’t really care who wins… I only care about who will be performing. A platform like this with nearly 10 million people watching would be excellent exposure for certain artists. I always hear about this nontraditional movement happening based on sales and overall interest (like Combs, runaway june, Riley Green, Cody Johnson, Ashley McBride, Osborne Bros, Pardi, Midland etc)…
But then these awards shows Never showcase such a movement… Only a fowl pop bowel movement. Please Dan and Shay and Thomas Rhett.. A courtesy flush…

Carrie Underwood is a legend and a icon in country music. She deserves a ETOY win to have on her resume. Personally I am the biggest Eric Church fan and would love to see him grab the ETOY, I been to 10 of his concerts over the years, his live performance is second to none. I disagree with Trigger I think Eric wants that ETOY win, but who knows. I know some of us don’t like Carrie’s music, but she is a class act as a human and performer, have at least a little respect. I’d be happy for her and County Music if Carrie won the ETOY. Just my opinion.

CEO: (chuckles) No, don’t be stupid. (Pause) I got it, let’s give Carrie Underwood CMA Entertainer of the Year. That will shut up all the critics.

It’s carrie’s year, not because she “deserves it,” but because she’s earned it. She’s been a big part of Country music whether you like her or not. And I wish this article went into the merits of the Entertainer of the Year requirements. While many think the award is for touring, there’s a lot of other accomplishments needed to be awarded EOTY; and this year Underwood has surprised them. Give credit where credit’s due, the woman’s earned it.

At the risk of getting in the middle of the pathetic bashing, going on here, of someone who has shown a terrific record in terms of her country touring this year, what I will say is this: 1. If Carrie Underwood wanted to excel as a pop artist, sure as hell she could. But have any of y’all ever seen her music sent to pop radio for airplay? Have her songs ever received pop remixes for pop radio, the way that Lady Antebellum and even Taylor Swift did back when she ‘still country’? No. Before He Cheats crossed over and all her singles since have not been traditional sounding country music but if she wanted to sellout to pop, it would have been evident. It bafffles me reading these comments because even though her music isn’t heavy on twangs and banjos, all this woman ever talks about and sings about and reps is country music (and God). Artists like Thomas Rhett, FGL, Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini, Sam Hunt etc are the ones who actually make more blatant stabs at pop music. 2. I’m a South African and nobody in SA listens to country music. People know Dolly Parton and that’s it. But in recent years, people know also about Carrie Underwood. With that being said, country is my favourite genre and I was introduced via Carrie Underwood. I would never know about George Strait, Merle Haggard, Loretta , Alan Jackson etc if I was not exposed to Carrie Underwood who impressed me so much that I cared to find out more about this fascinating unknown genre to me. Point is, she is a global representative for country music whether a lot of you choose to see it or not. In terms of actual music, I will always veer more towards Eric Church and Chris Stapleton as my favourite country artists but overall, nobody has done more for the image of country music in the last 14 years than Carrie Underwood and based on stats, it’s obvious that that is a fact. When you look at her first album sales (i.e. before all this nonsense about her being ‘too not country’ came up), her sales blew everything out the water. And again, her music has never changed and she’s never been promoted to pop (even though I think she should give it a shot). So clearly a few of y’all don’t like her which is insane to me personally (but to each their own) but that’s okay. But don’t say she doesn’t deserve this nomination or this win. Because that’s just not true.
Jared

Good article and an interesting topic.
It is easy to dismiss Carrie Underwood being worthy of Entertainer of the Year, and how her winning said award wouldn’t push Country Music in a positive direction. Carrie has been vocal about women needing a presences in Country Music and on the radio. Perhaps, this has hurt her radio play recently. Personally, I think it has more to do with song selection, but that’s a discussion for another time. Some say it is easy to throw words around and then point to her singles as proof she’s not walking the walk, which is a valid point. However, on her current tour she’s had Runaway June and Maddie and Tae opening for her. Neither, are hardcore traditional acts, but both are talented and vastly better than the Bro-Country or “Pop sold as Country” garage we’ve heard over the last few years. Runaway June recently had their first hit with “I Can Buy My Own Drinks”, and Maddie and Tae have made some solid music that sadly has gotten overlooked. Besides them opening for her, Carrie brings them onstage during her performance to sing a Medley of past female Country hits. For some, this is their first exposure to those songs, and for others it could be the first time they’ve heard them in years. Carrie could have anyone open for her, yet she chose to give huge exposure to little known Runaway June and Maddie and Tae. I applaud her for that, and I’m not sure how that isn’t walking the walk?!?!
Does the above give her a pass on some of her shortcomings. No. However, we need to acknowledge that she isn’t simply giving lip service to women needing a presences in Country Music and on the radio. You combine that along with what Tigger wrote, and it is hard to say Carrie Underwood has not earned Entertainer of the Year.

Of the nominated people, I think she deserves it. Her tour is very popular, but she still makes her regular Opry performance schedule. Along with Blake Shelton, she is the most visible face of country music to the outside world. She hosts the CMAs, does charity events, and does commercials and print ads for a few different products. She is the current female face of country music, regardless of whether her music is traditional country or not. I love her, but I do wish she would come back to her roots.

Carrie Underwood has worked her ass off, I don’t care if you like her music or not, I don’t care how much you think it’s Country or not. Fact is she’s worked hard for well over a decade for Country music. No music genre is the same as it was 20+ years ago, music always evolves & changes. No pop album out today sounds like one from the 60’s does it. Rock has completley shifted from what is was in the 70’s to now. The music can still contain elements & themes of what it once was but it doesn’ stay the same. Music is an artistic form of expression, dictating what a musical artist should create is like telling Picasso what to paint. If you can’t accept that music is art then nothing can help you, you’re stuffed because that’s what it is & what it will always be. You can make as many nasty, sick, pathetic, sexist comments all you want, it doesn’t change the fact that she has had 27 number 1 singles, that every one of her albums as gone number 1. That her tours are massive sell outs and all successful. That she has toured Europe successfully the last few years now (including playing at one of the biggest events in the UK) and unlike most Country artists actually came to Australia and New Zealand. And it won’t stop her from releasing what is her signature style of music, her take on Country, her artistic form of expression. How are any woman in Country to ever succeed if all that happens is they get torn down? Carrie winning an award like this will open a lot of doors for other woman in the genre who have their own styles of Country music. If you can’t see how that’s a good thing, well…..

respectfully disagree with your impassioned defense of carrie , jb123.
”’ what is her signature style of music, her take on Country, her artistic form of expression. ”
carrie has no style of expression . her music is severely influenced by pop-isms in terms of over-the -top vocals and the heavy pop type writing ,productions ,arrangements and larger venues where she performs . ….mostly stadiums, arenas and festivals . this type of song is a must for artists playing large venues …loud , rocking , rock and pop -like material ( urban ) which means forsaking country’s traditions and that’s exactly what has happened with much of her material . she has capitulated to her label and a fan base that THINKS it is listening to COUNTRY music . play loretta ,emily scott robinson , holly williams , kelsey waldon or even reba’s latest for that fan base and they will be scratching their heads wondering what they are listening to .
carrie’s music lacks any semblance of character or artistic expression . it is generic , genre-challenged pap designed to tap into the young rock/pop crowd and certainly not the real COUNTRY listeners and fans . it panders successfully….. but it is NOT COUNTRY music no matter how hard she is working to sell it . AC-DC works hard too .

Eric Church DESERVES every award he has been nominated for. I read that EOTY is based on quality not popularity. His songs have meaning, he writes almost all of his own songs – he can entertain!! A double down tour with no opening acts has been the best concerts I have ever been too! This woman of the year crap needs to stop – if Carrie Underwood wins – she only won because of her gender and the industry can control her. ETOY – best music around – takes shots with his fans – signs boots and albums – talks to his fans, interacts with them – I have seen him three times now and his concerts and his music gives me awesome chills! There should also be a best songwriter award – shit he writes songs that other artists take and these songs have meaning, feeling, (by the way We Were (and I do like Keith Urban) the best version of this song is the one featuring Eric Church! Church on! He is my ETOY!

“Underwood’s current tour has spanned the CMA’s eligibility period almost perfectly, and concludes later this month.”
The CMA eligibility period – “for the 2019 show was July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019.”
Carrie’s Cry Pretty Tour – May 1, 2019 through October 31, 2019
Garth’s Stadium Tour – March 9, 2019 through November 16, 2019
It doesn’t look like a touring award at all.
