Really? Steel Magnolia’s Meghan Linsey to Try Out for ‘The Voice’?
Independent music conspiracy theorists love to pontificate how the entire music industry is controlled by behind-the-scenes oligarchs like the man behind the green curtain in the Wizard of Oz—pulling cords and levies to deem who makes it and who doesn’t without any say so by the American public. Though there is certainly an interconnected “kinky sex” network that helps the wheels church and stay greased, in truth there’s still a lot of happenstance and public feedback that goes into launching superstars, and like all industries, the record business is too mired in corporate bureaucracy and incompetence to pull off any true underhanded plots.
However sometimes the layers of the onion get peeled so far back, it’s almost laughable how lacking of self-awareness the industry can be, and how little they think of the public as they try to pull off some ruse for their own benefit in what is supposed to be an impartial scenario. We saw that when the Academy of Country Music Awards purposely disobeyed their own stated rules by nominating, and then awarding Justin Moore with the New Artist of the Year trophy in 2014. And now we’re seeing it from The Voice, and big time.
The murmurings that America’s reality TV singing shows are secretly stacked with ringers coming from interconnected agents and managers have been out there for years. Even though they present themselves as trying to vet the entire American public to find the next hidden superstar, in reality singers with the right handlers can get shuffled to the front of the line.
We had confirmation that NBC’s The Voice was looking to stack the deck this year when it was revealed Americana music star Jason Isbell was approached to participate in the reality singing competition last November. It became this huge, laughable moment in the independent music world, not only because The Voice producers we so lacking in self-awareness that they even considered for a second an artist like Jason Isbell would participate, but that he could do so and be passed off as some unknown, or even a struggling music performer. This is a guy who has headlined festivals and won the Americana Music Association’s Album of the Year. It showed the daftness of The Voice and how they had eradicated any pretenses of looking to break stars, and instead were looking for established stars maybe slightly under the radar to call their own.
Now we’ve received word that another established star actually accepted the advances of The Voice. Meghan Linsey, the female half of the once Big Machine-signed duo Steel Magnolia, and a solo artist in her own right, will be participating on the newest season of the singing competition.
I mean, are you kidding us? Steel Magnolia’s 2011 album charted at #3 on the country charts, and #7 on the Billboard 200. They had a Top 5 hit with “Keep On Loving You.” This was a major label-signed duo that was nominated by both the CMA and ACM Awards for Vocal Duo of the Year. By any and all measurements, Meghan Linsey is “established” as a music artist beyond all reasonable doubt. Even as a solo artist, she’s already been releasing singles to radio. Saving Country Music even wrote a review for her ill-conceived anti Bro-Country song “Try Harder Than That” way back in August of 2014.
What this illustrates is:
1) The Voice is dispensing of all pretenses of trying to find unknown or even middling stars needing a big break, and simply stacking the deck with established talent in the face of the show being unable to launch viable music stars.
2) The mainstream country music industry continues to struggle so mightily in its top-heavy system to develop talent, especially female talent, we’re now to the point where artists and managers are turning to reality TV competitions as a last resort.
The whole thing speak to the systemic ailments of the country music mainstream industry. Music Row should be embarrassed that this is what it has come to for certain artists, including last season’s winner Craig Wayne Boyd, who also was in the midst of a moderate career when The Voice tapped him to participate in the show. And no offense to Meghan Linsay. She’s just trying to get attention in an industry uninterested in looking beyond its top established stars, especially when it comes to women.
***UPDATE: Why It’s Unfair for Meghan Linsey to Win “The Voice”***
It should also be understood that compared to American Idol, The Voice doesn’t attempt to pass itself off as a pure vetting of the American public. But the inclusion of Meghan Linsey, and the courting of Jason Isbell, should tell you all you need to know about the ruse this singing show franchise is attempting to pull off on the American public.

Shame that Julie Roberts never caught on more, her first few mainstream albums were really good, outside of her cover of a pop song that was popular around that time (blanking on the name of the song, but much like Jack Ingram covering Hinder it was not good).
As for Megan Lindsey, wasnt she and James Otto also part of some failed A&E “reality” show about Nashville? Honestly I wish the Voice and American Idol would just go away, neither show has cranked out a sustainable star for a few years now.

“The whole thing speak to the systemic ailments of the country music mainstream industry. Music Row should be embarrassed that this is what it has come to for certain artists……,”
Music Row should be embarrassed that BLAKE SHELTON and his half-written generic lacklustre songs actually represent the face of country music on that show every week .
It seems impossible to believe that there isn’t some monetary compensation included in a singer’s consent to appear on the VOICE regardless of who that singer is . ” Established ” as an artist in no way means set for life and rolling in the download cheques . It MAY mean that a few more folks know you’re name and NOW you get the chance to go out and tour off the strength of your number 7 ” hit ” to , hopefully , make an actual living singing songs . The VOICE opportunity has got to include some $$$ for someone who literally puts their job , family and career on hold to participate for the two month run and allow advertisers , networks and iTunes to make money off of their commitment to the program . I mean …the money involved in clothes , make-up and Craigs Wayne Boyd’s haircut alone must add up to a tidy little sum ….not to mention flights , accomodations , meals, video shoots etc etc etc. When they call me to appear I’ll be SURE to get my haircut and shine my shoes BEFORE I get on the plane .

In 2014, Meghan Linsey tried out for The Voice, having three judges, with the exception of Blake Shelton turn their chairs around, ironically, since she had toured with Blake earlier in their careers. She will now be participating on Pharrell’s team in season 8 of the show.

Blake probably didn’t turn around because they actually have monitors where they can see who is singing but its low enough where the TV or audience can’t see it. I really hate this show. I think Blake Shelton is a genius. I mean he is selling records and cashing checks. His fans don’t seem to mind getting ripped off with his half-ass albums. He even gets radio play. Maybe even more than he ever got before he started doing the show. Blake will be remembered for “Austin” by country fans and for being the redneck judge on that singing show by the stupid poppy general audience. I don’t even hate all of his music. I am pretty sure he has 3 or 4 good songs. The guy can sing too, but I just cannot stand the guy anymore.

Steel Magnolia got big because of a reality show. Why is it surprising that she would do this for her own career?
Trigger
February 24, 2015 @ 10:40 am
The premise of this show is that they’re searching America for worthy, undiscovered talent. Meghan Linsey’s talent was already discovered over a decade ago. He’s sang duets with Blake Shelton. It plays into the concern that the entire show is staged. Yes, Steel Magnolia already won their chance at stardom. So give someone else a chance. Meghan Linsey has already made more money off of music and 95% of musicians hope to make in their lifetimes.

“The premise of this show is that they”™re searching America for worthy, undiscovered talent”
not really. At least its not the only thing they say they do.
when she was interviewed before she sang, she went into a lot of detail about her prior career; she mentioned her high charting billboard songs, touring with Blake, and how her career more or less went nowhere after her and her husband’s first success.
so, the show is portraying itself as only being about finding new unknown people. They’ve had a few people on that have had record deals that didn’t pan out.
They are open about the contestant’s histories
and If her career has bottomed out, why not try this? What downside is there for her?
I guess she could carry on pretending she’s still a chart topping country music star, with a great career, (which it seems she is not at this point) but that seems like a deader dead end than going on the voice.

The entire show IS staged. I agree she shouldn’t be on it having already achieved her level of success, but they shouldn’t have asked Jason Isbell to audition either. The Voice is not an amateur singing competition, no matter what they try to sell it as. It’s a place for already-established artists to win a recording contract.

My only point is when you’ve reached the level where you’ve been nominated for major industry awards and had multiple successful radio singles, it’s hard to call you unknown, or unsuccessful. Big misconception there Trig,,opening acts in a Prevost are usually losing money on the road. I don’t think Sugar Magnolia were ever a $$ making draw on the road, maybe 5G for a state fair here and there but that’s about it. Either way it’s a stupid show wether she’s on it or not
Trigger
February 24, 2015 @ 4:18 pm
Please don’t confuse a Bob Weir Grateful Dead song with Steel Magnolia 🙂
I’m not saying Steel Magnolia was a huge draw or anything, but without question they had reached the top tier of country duos by receiving ACM and CMA nominations, and having a Top 5 single isn’t easy for anyone these days.
Let me put it like this: Kacey Musgraves and Brandy Clark never even had a Top 10 single. Jamey Johnson has never had a Top 5 single. Plus Steel Magnolia had two other top 25 singles and a #3 album. They were a serious, major label project on the same label as Taylor Swift.

Speaking of Julie Roberts (I talk about her every chance I get and keep up with what is going on with her through her Facebook page) She just posted that she received a call from Shooter Jennings, wanting her to work with him on a new cd. That is all the detail she went into. For a better understanding of what an amazingly talented vocalist she is, I would recommend going to her website and downloading her cover of “Sweet Dreams” or “Angel From Montgomery”. She also has a song called “Christmas In Prison” that is just stunning. There is a lot more to her than just her hit “Break Down Here”, which was originally released by Trace Adkins.

There have always been established folks with prior record deals on these shows. Adam Lambert was working as a pro singer before he was ever on Idol. Carrie Underwood had a look when she was 12. There have been other folks who’ve auditioned on The Voice as outlined in the other comments.
It’s no secret that the point of The Voice is NOT to launch a star. It isn’t, y’all. It’s not about discovering some unknown talent.
It’s about getting millions of people to tune in each week, and getting millions of people to download the tracks from the song. Do you realize that the show has generated 20,000,000 Single Sales? I’ll go ahead and repeat that – The show has sold 20,000,000 singles in less than 4 years. That’s pretty damned great. And THAT is what the show is about.
Yes, people can hem and haw over and over about how the show can’t launch a star, and yet every season, people tune in week in and week out to see if THIS will be the year they do.
It’s about Money y’all. that’s what it’s about. Who needs a star to sell a million downloads when you can sell 20,000,000 without one?
Phil
February 26, 2015 @ 12:21 pm
What really gets me about Pharrell Williams is that he’s suppose to be a vocal coach (and he’s won Grammy’s) yet he can’t sing any better than a random WalMart employee. Blake Shelton is a mediocre singer at best as well. I guess being fairly good looking (I suppose?) and very tall is enough to get you by?
I really think Blake Shelton selling out to the corporate machine by being a part of this fake show is probably about as far away from “Country” as you can get. He’s so dang popular too but when I look at him all I can see is a complete lack of integrity.
Mainstream Country is so corporate in nature now and that’s exactly the opposite of what it’s really suppose to be.

I can’t believe so many people on here watch this show.. Thank god for google I had to look all these people up other than Isbell. I mean who cares who goes on the show, any legitimate musician wouldn’t “try out”. Why so negative about the show and Blake and country music. You all know so much about it your must be watching it and if you don’t turn the channel. I mean really different kinds of music appeals to different people why tear them down like that. At least on this show sounding different is good. And what’s wrong with a struggling artist trying to get back on track. People calm down stop trying to tear everyone down. It’s okay if you like it or don’t. But have some manners.

To the author of this article, “YOU ‘ARE’ A 100% PURE USDA PRIME CHOICE IDIOT”, and I’ll gladly explain why! No doubt you’ll probably delete my comment based on it’s TRUTH!!
Yes, Meghan Linsey was a part of STEEL MAGNOLIA! After STEEL MAGNOLIA signed with Big Machine, they became victims of a company that did nothing to promote them after the song “Keep On Loving You” hit #4 on the country chart. Did anyone notice that the song did not STAY FOR VERY LONG? It quickly dropped out of site. Big Machine literally broke them financially!!
Steel Magnolia managed to get away from Scott Borchetta and Big Machine and got with another management company out of Florida that SCREWED THEM TOO!! When Steel Magnolia broke up, Meghan Linsey managed herself for some time with the assistance of her new guitar player.
Tell you what, YOU TRY MANAGING YOURSELF AS A SINGER NATIONALLY WITH LITTLE MONEY!! Are you aware of all the work that goes into doing that? Go ahead, I DARE YOU TO DO THAT!!!! Because of THE VOICE, Meghan Linsey is given the OPPORTUNITY to START ALL OVER AGAIN….LITERALLY!!! So anyone who understands my point will see that you can only be taken as a HATER!!
If you don’t like an artist, that’s fine, but don’t take facts and twist them around to make other people hate them too that might otherwise appreciate them… REGARDLESS of the past SUPPOSED accomplishments, Meghan is not reaping any rewards from Steel Magnolia because of BIG MACHINE AND THEIR SNAKE IN THE GRASS WAYS!!!

“became victims of a company that did nothing to promote them after the song “Keep On Loving You” hit #4 on the country chart.”
There’s so much wrong with that statement, I’m not even sure where to start. Playing music on any level is a privileged, not a right. Having a Top 5 hit is something only maybe one in 25,000 musicians ever experience in their life. Crying “victim” rings so incredibly hollow. Do you think they would have had a hit without the help of a major label?
What we can all agree on is Scott Borchetta is a snake in the grass. I was saying that before The Voice even existed and Steel Magnolia was still touring, so don’t get too slap happy about how I’m uninformed.

I definitely don’t believe that Meghan should be on the Voice at all. Like some people who mentioned above, this show should be about discovering new, undiscovered talent, not for “has-been’s” who think that this will reboot their careers. Every time she advances to the next level in the competition, she never looks excited. She has more of a “well of course I advanced – I’m better than everyone else and I shouldn’t even have to be here in the first place” look on her face. She even admits in this article http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6494806/voice-meghan-linsey-interview that it was a “little bit of a hard pill to swallow to go on a show like this.” If she has any class or dignity left, she would have the good judgment to step down from the show in order for the well-deserved contestants to continue competing amongst themselves.

I agree 100%. I also noticed that Meghan doesnt like when Sawyer is chosen either. I looked at all my recordings, and she was caught ROLLING HER EYES when they announced Sawyer being saved. She thinks she is better, and doesnt have the same reaction as the other contestants when being saved. Also, anyone who opened for Blake, cut an album, appeared on the Apollo, or tells Reba McIntyre “NICE TO SEE YOU AGAIN”, means she has had her day, and its time to let others have theirs as well. I cant stand that The Voice allowed her to be a contestant.

The Voice has always readily admitted they have producers vetting some or all of the contestants. So what? Since the auditions are blind that does not mean they’ll even get a chair to turn, much less make it to the finale of the show. There is no tougher biz than the music biz – where a top-charting artist has to start at the bottom a year later if their career blows up for some reason. The voice has had all kinds of pro singers on the show – for crissake they had Celine Dion’s vocal director a cpl seasons ago.

I do enjoy The Voice very much, and I intend to continue watching. The fact that I think Meghan shouldn’t be on the show in the first place is my opinion, which won’t change whether I change the channel or not. What really bugs me the most is her lack of humility…to state that being invited to audition for the show was “a little bit of a hard pill to swallow to go on a show like this.” How condescending! There are many singers who would consider it an honor to be invited to audition! And if she thinks being on the show is a “hard pill to swallow,” why is she even there??

In the past my favorite artists have been eliminated pretty quickly and this time all my favorites made it to the final five.they are all Talented artists. And with everyone except sawyer their previous life experiences has made the show worth following to the end. Sawyer is exceptionally gifted for being sooo young. I enjoyed listening to him. I look foward to following meagan, josua, india, koryn and sawyer in the years to come. i am just an average jane who works a blue collar job and and watches tv in the evenings. And why oh why did Jake Worthington get all the way to second place a couple of seasons ago, he was ok, but not THAT great, and of course you never hear anything about him now!

i don’t like her attitude on there!!! If you see previous episodes of her she portrays this image like she’s too good to be on that stage!

I have watched Meghan and I feel she is more scared than any thing. I think what you see as arrogance is really a fascade she hides behind as a “failed artist”. I could have this all wrong, but I am used to having to put a lot of pieces together and come up with a full true picture. This is what I picked up from the show.
1. She was in a duo about 10 years ago.
2. She is no longer with her partner, seemingly not her choice.
3. She is still in a lot of pain over a failed relationship.
4. She associates her failed career over her failed relationship with her partner.
5. When Meghan sang with Blake Shelton she was 19 years old and sang country music.
6. To give Mr Shelton credit, he has heard hundreds of voices in 10 years. At least he remembered her face.
7. Also, Meghan was singing in a style that is usually not Mr. Sheltons forte.
To sum up: Meghan is a vastly different person at 29 than she was at 19. (Weren’t we all). She needs the validation of being a single act in a different genre of music. We all need validation at times for many reasons. I believe Meghan can honestly hold her head high and know she proved herself to her harshest critic, herself.
And though I didn’t read the article cited in many comments about it being a hard pill to swallow, I can understand her point. May I give an example?
You have a good job. You worked hard for everything you got, then new owners come in and change everything, including your job. Its eliminated so they offer you the same chance as new graduates for the same position. You’ve done this job for years, proved yourself, but because there are no other jobs in town, you have to compete against 18-19 year old kids, just out of school, maybe your own son, for one of the few jobs. I think most people would think that would be a hard pill to swallow.
