Scotty McCreery Loves How The Latest Trend in Country Is Country
We keep talking about how one of the hottest trends currently in mainstream country music is actual country music, and listening to Scotty McCreery, he concurs, and wants to help to keep things trending in that direction. And with undeniable appeal of his deep, twangy voice, and what he’s done with more traditional material when he’s chosen to go in that direction in the past, it would be more than welcome if he does.
Speaking to The Boot after the CMA Awards in November, the now 26-year-old who is signed to Triple Tigers said about an upcoming album he’s working on, “I grew up on the good old country music, so we might be taking it back to that a little bit: a little more fiddle, a little more steel guitar. So, we’ll see how that rolls. That’s where my head’s at right now.”
A little? Hell, why not a lot? But Scotty’s already been a little more country than many of his mainstream contemporaries, so we won’t complain if he continues in that direction. And speaking of his peers, McCreery says about the return to twang, “I love it. It’s awesome. There’s so many [artists]. You’ve got Luke Combs over there who’s bringing it back, Jon Pardi. There are so many great traditional acts that are kicking butt, so I love that.”
We love it too, and so do fans when traditional country is actually given an opportunity. Luke Combs may not be the 2nd coming of Waylon, but he’s also the hottest thing in all of country music right now, and a hell of a lot more country than whatever the hell was the hottest thing two years ago at this time. Meanwhile Jon Pardi’s single “Heartache Medication” will be vying for #1 on radio next week. It took long enough to climb the charts, but it’s finally there.
And the success of guys like Luke Combs and Jon Pardi give opportunities and incentives to a guy like Scotty McCreery to get a little more country. And before you know it, mainstream country starts sounding country again. McCreery had two #1’s off his last album himself, and could be in a good position to helping keep this trend moving forward.

Now if only Chris Young would follow suit…. Maybe he will considering his album’s constant delays

The truly depressing thing about Chris Young is that, with the success of Neon, he easily could have led this movement almost 10 years ago. If he would have stuck to his guns instead of selling out, Bro Country might never have happened.
So yeah, fuck Chris Young.

Out of all the mainstream guys… Chris Young is the most salvageable. He can turn his career around by making only a 45 degree angle – most other artists need a 180 degree turn around…

Let’s not forget about Dustin Lynch. The guy’s debut single was a solid, fairly traditional song, easily one of the best mainstreams ones at the time. It went to #2 on the country charts, certified Platinum, a Top 40 pop hit, and the fourth biggest country song of 2012. But everything he’s released since has been trash

Exactly my point. At least 70% of Chris Young’s discography is great stuff… For Dustin, well he just has that one song haha.. The odds for Chris to go back to his traditional roots are much stronger than the odds of Dustin ever going back. Dustin is long past salvageable, his fandom already identities him as a pop country artist. The Damage is already permanently done for ole Dusty.

70% is generous. No album since Neon is half as good, and he hasn’t released a great single in years. Even “Drowning,” which should be phenomenal, is rendered average and even a little cheesy by its shitty arrangement and production.

I agree. But even before that, Jason Aldean was doing solid country music on his first 4 albums. Then he sold out and lost his true country feel.

Scotty McCreery won American Idols by singing pure country song all throughout the competition. So yes, real country songs are popular and can sell! I hope he gets back to that level. He is getting better now thankfully.
On Chris Young and some others. pretty sad to have an outstanding country voice and not use it just because you want to follow the trend of the month. Usually artist gets better with time but it usually the opposite when you have no integrity.

That “trend” chasing for Chris Young hasn’t paid off either… I hope he returns to his roots soon. Production of his newest stuff have been iffy… But an improvement on his Losing Sleep (Losing Fans) era… Hopefully he gets back to his Neon 2012 days!!!

Kane Brown is one of the most egregious here. If he would just sing country, he’d be great.

Compared to the big piles of nothing that are Thomas Rhett, the douchebag from Florida Georgia Line, Sam Hunt, Chase Rice, etc., Kane Brown is Pavarotti. He’s hardly too far gone.
Luke Bryan is another one who has the voice for good country music but uses his talents for evil instead.

I love Scotty’s voice and music. He puts on a terrific live show and the crowd goes wild when he does the “Country Medley” at his shows.

So true about Scotty’s shows….always filled with great singing and a top band. That “country medey” is certainly a major highlight. I would love to see Mo Pitney get some radio play…speaking of a true traditional artist.

Scotty is so much like Buck Owen’s when he was young
His expressions. The way he sings. I was one of the Garner, NC people who stayed up pressing the redial button. God bless you, Scotty.

Jim it’s great to see that you still like the good ole classic country at you age of 98. My Dad also loved it until his death a few years ago at age 87. I know I’ll never lose my love of the twang, fiddle and steel. Good to see you post.

That pardi song caught me by surprise, I heard it accidentally on the radio when I was getting my oil changed. I heard them fiddles and my ears perked up and I thought ” holy shit what the hell is this song on the radio”. Could it be? A country song on country radio?!
If the resurgence of real country is truly here, it may take me a while to get back on the horse. I’ve been out circulation for quite some time. Hell I may even check the local stations out envy once in a while for the first time in many many years.

Scotty McCreery is one of my favorites. I love that there are younger country singers who are helping carry on the torch. Riley Green also comes to mind. Listen to his current single “I wish Grandpas Never Died” and you’ll hear about wishing country got played on country radio.

Riley Green was here last week and although I didn’t care for his band of hard rock musicians (including drum solo & Eddie Van Halen’s Eruption guitar solo) he was smart enough to come out by himself for an acousticly touching sing along Grandpa’s Never Died. Goosebump city when the crowd sang our favorite line in unison.
On a sad note I was devastated upon hearing of Neil Pearts passing. He changed the way I thought about music and touched the hearts and minds of millions. The GOAT. R.I.P

Too late for his idol Josh Turner aka Bro-Country’s most notable victim. 🙁

Yes, it’s a three way collaboration between Thirty Tigers, Sony Music, and Triple 8 Management.
