Shooter Jennings New Album “Black Ribbons”
On March 3rd, Shooter Jennings, son of Waylon Jennings will be releasing his fourth album, and it will be about as country as concrete fields. It is entitled Black Ribbons, and the first single “Wake Up” will premier on Dec. 22nd.
““Black Ribbons” features the debut of Shooter’s new band Hierophant, who inspired him to leave his country roots behind and embrace a ‘60s/’70s psychadelic Rock vibe”.
Here’s what Shooter has to say about the album:
“I made an album for the truth-seekers of the world. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that I’m sick of the lies and the processed bubblegum bullshit churned out by the overlords of double-speak. You could say this album is a soundtrack for all of us. I feel like a different human being these days. . . and shining what my buddy Will O’ The Wisp calls ‘the last beacon of truth and defiance.’ The light still shines, folks.”

I read this as, “Powell left my country band so I tried my hand at pop country…that fizzled out so now I am gonna try to get on this rock revival that’s going on.”

Shooter was lucky to have Powell and Ted Russell Kamp in his band, both great musicians.

You guy sound like idiots, and I don’t know where you got the quote about him “leaving his country roots”. And autopsy iv has about as much intellegence as a hot air baloon. The new record features ted russell kamp and bryan keeling, but is a record for the folks out there who don’t play the genre game, which you guys are doing. You’re descriminating as much as radio does for the artists, like shooter, that don’t get played. Once again savingcountrymusic.com feeds a stupid speculation cycle that only helps folks like shooter out by keeping his name out there, so thank you there, but otherwise o facts have been given and you guys just keep that bullshit going. Oh by the way, leroys new shit sucks and his first record was way more pop country than the first. Autopsy, you really are the perez hilton of country music, gay, petty, with a chip on your shoulder. This article pissed me off so much because you guys are the first to judge an artist like shooter, pinning him just like the pop country fags do. I’ve heard the record and you dudes

You dudes are gonna eat your own shit when u hear it. Its by far his best work and it in no way is riding the coattails of any movement. Its progressive, fresh and really deep lyrically. But you guys are really the biggest enemies real true music have, judging like little women on your pedistals. I hope no one looks here for guidance (or at ninebullets) to good music because you guys are worse than rolling stone

Sallydontdance,
I got that “leaving his country roots behind” quote from an official press release put out by Shooter’s management. If it is untrue, then Shooter needs to take it up with them.
I keep on talking about this story because there is not one other media outlet that will. I’m trying to get the info to the Shooter fans. I’m not going to say that I don’t have an opinion on the whole thing, but since I am the only media outlet covering it, I am doing my best to just get the facts out to people and leave the judgment to the readers.
You name calling is probably not helping your case, but I appreciate you standing up for an artist you believe in.

I heard some of the new songs at his last concert. Crisp, fresh and invigorating is all I can say. I enjoyed them as much as I enjoyed hearing him do Outlaw and Daddy’s Farm.
Shooter is not like any other musician I listen to. He is a true artist and is unbelievably talented. Who knows, maybe we’ll get a rap song or two out of him in the coming years. Hope not, but I bet you it would kick ass.

Sorry for the name calling, but i felt like this Autopsy cat does nothing but rag on Shooter, and Leroy’s music is alright i guess, but i am a big fan of shooter. I’ve done tons of searching and found plenty of press releases about black ribbons but nothing that says he’s “leaving his country roots behind.” Shooter’s brother is a close friend of mine and i’ve hung out with Shooter many times and I feel like no one is giving him a fair chance, having not heard the album. The album is fantastic, deep and really all over the place genre-wise, but t it’s heart it’s a really progressive southern rock album, and it’s really exciting, and as an artist, i think this is definitely his best record. He’s doing something that NO ONE is doing, and that’s what’s so exciting. I feel like no one gives him a chance because either 1. he’s waylon’s kid or because 2. he’s not being waylon’s kid. and they act like he rides his father’s coat-tails, when shooter is one of the most real individuals i’ve ever met, and unlike Hank 3, was actually really close to his father and very respectful of his legacy, and i don’t blame him for really reaching out and doing everything he’s capable of. that’s what this record is…

Steven & Sallydontdance,
Listen, I don’t know how else to put this, the information above in italics, and the image, were taken from a press release I got directly from Shooter’s management. If you haven’t seen this anywhere else, it is because nobody else paid attention to it, or have the access to press releases that I do.
Like you said, Shooter doesn’t fit in any genre, so the country sites aren’t concerned with it, and neither are the rock ones. I am trying to get the info out there because nobody else is and there’s still a demand for it.
I would not risk my integrity that I’ve built up running this site for going on two years to trash an artist I really don’t have a beef with. All I am trying to do is get the information out to the Shooter fans, and the reason I highlighted the phrase about him “leaving his country roots” is because I run a COUNTRY website.
If you honestly think that I would blatantly lie to forward some agenda I have with Shooter, or any artist, even a pop country artist, then you’ve missed the whole point of this website, and I am probably a fool for trying to rationalize with you.
I mean hell, I DEFENDED Shooter when Hank III accused him of stealing his persona:

It’s all about the music. I’m glad that there’s people out there still passionate enough about Shooter’s music that you would come to his defense and fight for it, but you’re tilting at windmills if you think you’re going to pin me down for lying about it or making up false quotes.

I agree with Sallydontdance the rest of you assholes don’t know shit. They used to say the same thing about waylon. That he was to Rock, n roll then nobody wanted to give him a chance so he started producing his own material at hillbilly central and, then look what happend the first country album to sell a million copies. Shooter did put the o back in country. He has created his own sound. Like myself Shooter grew up listening not only to his dad and cash but, bands like white zombie, and Metallica, waylon even opend up for metallica at lollapalloza one year and, back in the 70’s he opened for another one of my favorite bands the Grateful Dead. Shooter is one of a kind. He mixes country, Hard Rock, and Jam Band Music. Its fucking brilliant. He’s not afraid to sing about things that people like myself can relate to and, if I ever hear anybody else say that he’s trying to copy and, sound like his dad im gonna kick their ass. Sure he was influenced by his dad but, also by jessi. The best of both worlds. I knew how proud waylon was of shooter when he was in star gun and, now he’s up in hillbilly heaven looking down even prouder.

i really like his new stuff and i agree with sally, genre’s are bullshit. If you like it listen, if you don’t hit the back button

I just listened to the first song released from the new album, and it is not country. I really liked his music, and I think I’ll be gettng Black Ribbons… but it’s definatly a break from the sound any Shooter fan is used to.

I’m listening to an advance of Black Ribbons right now. It’s the craziest album ever put out by someone who used to be known as a country artist.
It’s very, very good. Totally defies all expectations.

I just finished listening to the record, and while I was eagerly awaiting this release, I am sorely disappointed. I had heard a handful of the new songs (Black Ribbons, California via Tennessee, God Bless Alabama) live at a recent performance, and I mostly liked them. I didn’t really care for Wake Up, which they opened with at the live show, and I still don’t care for it on this record.
The songs I had previously heard really sounded better live than they do on the record. The Stephen King bits add a weird “Escape from New York” vibe to the record, and some of the songs don’t really seem to fit the theme or flow with the concept as I understand it. Shooter definitely swings for the fences on this effort, and he has to know that his ambitions will leave some of his fans behind. I have always enjoyed Shooter’s music, but unfortunately, this is where we part ways.

I could buy 1000 different albums that sound like this…What the F@CK happened to the best current artist in music….Instead of being Whisky and F@ck You, he is now Valium and act like a Bitch……Very Dissapointed
