Sturgill Simpson Sets Residency at New York’s Webster Hall

This story has been updated.

Along with his eight appearances on Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival Tour throughout September, and a stop at Merlefest in Wilkesboro, North Carolina on September 16th, Sturgill Simpson has set a five-night residency at Webster Hall in New York City for this fall between September 28th to October 2nd.

Promoted as “Five Heated Nights in NYC” with the gig poster portraying “Dick Daddy’s Spicy Picante Sauce, made in NYC,” it most certainly will be a hot ticket when they go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 9th. The marketing here appears to be a play off the old Pace Picante Sauce commercials where a bunch of cowboys are sent apoplectic when they’re told their Picante sauce is made in New York City. “Get a rope,” was the catch phrase that became part of the zeitgeist from the 80’s commercial.

This begins to round out Sturgill Simpson’s fall touring schedule, but what some Simpson fans are wondering is just what they can expect from these live shows. Sturgill’s last two records Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 were reincarnations of songs from his back catalog done bluegrass style, and at one point Simpson assured “We’ll definitely tour with the bluegrass.”

However, despite numerous queries from Saving Country Music headquarters, it has not been officially confirmed or announced if these Sturgill Simpson appearances either in NYC or on the Outlaw Fest tour will involve the bluegrass band, or be more a straightforward Sturgill show. However, the Merlefest folks have assured it will be Sturgrass when he takes the stage there, and numerous other indications seem to point to both the Outlaw Fest shows and the Webster Hall residency featuring Sturgill’s bluegrass band. More info once it’s been confirmed.

Of course Simpson’s last tour was truncated by the pandemic, and featured Sturgill mostly rockin’ out to the music of his last original studio album Sound & Fury from 2019 with Tyler Childers opening on an arena tour.

Tickets go on sale Friday, July 9th at 10 a.m. Eastern with presale starting Wednesday (7/7).
