Sunny Sweeney Earns Additional Dates Opening for Bob Seger
Texas country singer and songwriter Sunny Sweeney is getting some massive opportunities to win over arena crowds as one of the primary openers on Bob Seger’s big farewell tour. And she’s been doing such a killer job, her run of shows has just been extended.
The Saving Country Music Song of the Year winner for 2017 was first added to four shows on the Bob Seger Final Tour opening in Albuquerque, NM at the Tingley Coliseum, the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, The Ford Center in Frisco, TX (near Dallas), as well as the CenturyLink Center in Bossier City, LA, March 12th. Now she will be trekking with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band to Florida for shows at the Amalie Arena in Tampa on March 15th, and the BB&T Center near Ft. Lauderdale on March 17th.
The dates come just as Sunny Sweeney was cycling off opening for regular tour mate Cody Jinks, and ahead of playing her own run of shows late March through June (see dates below). This isn’t the first time Sunny Sweeney has opened for a massive country star. In 2017, she was tapped last minute to be the opener for Garth Brooks at Austin’s Auditorium Shores as part of South by Southwest. She then later played with Garth at a show in Lubbock, TX on April 1st, 2017, and had also played on a Garth Arena show back in 2016 in San Antonio.
Once signed to Big Machine Records as one of the label’s very first artists, Sunny Sweeny didn’t fit the Nashville mold just right, eventually venturing back to Texas, and releasing the well-received Trophy in 2017.

Glad to see her get this opportunity. Bob Seger knows good songs when he hears them.
Except for Shakedown. That one was not good.

She did a good job openin for Cody. Happy for her.

I love Sunny and I think it’s great she gets to do shows like these with Bob Seger but I’d really love some new music. I’d also like to see her come back and play a proper Chicago show. She came for Christmas Acoustic snicks & giggles with Ward Davis which was fun but she only played 4 tunes. Logan’s Bar and Grill in Freeport IL 100 miles away (for the second time in 3 years) isn’t exactly convenient on a weeknight but we’ll see………..sometimes those shows have proven to be magical.

It’s only been two years since Trophy came out.

I’m really happy for her. I hope to catch one of her own headlining shows I’m a big fan of some of her more personal songs (“Bottle By My Bed” is a personal tearjerker) that she doesn’t usually perform in front of say, a Jinks crowd. I know she’ll get some new fans with these gigs.
March 12, 2019 @ 10:10 am
Saw her play BBMB opening for Jinks.
March 13, 2019 @ 6:23 am
Cool. I’ve seen her open twice for Jinks, and she didn’t include it either time. Both times she primarily stuck to her more upbeat/honky tonk material. I’m jealous!

What is BBMB?
March 13, 2019 @ 10:10 am
Her song, Bottle By My Bed

Oh-haha. Thanks. I thought it was some festival I wasn’t hip to. 🙂

She’s great and has some excellent tunes! Congrats Sunny!

Call me narrow-minded. But, mixing country and rock doesn’t work. Ms. Sweeney is a fine singer. In facr, her first hit ” From a Table Away ” reminds me a lit of Charly McClain. But, country and rock are worlds apart. I don’t hate rock. I just don’t believe in mixing the two. The result is the disastrous late 70s.

my only response to that sentiment , jeff , would be that there are a lot of folks who listen and love both genres …and I’d count myself among them . if I’m going to a Seger show and it introduces me to a Sunny Sweeney ( or whomever ) …that’s a huge bonus not only to me but to Sunny Sweeney . she gets to do her thing for fans who may not be familiar with her but may be fans of a more country/roots oriented genre . for me that says ” win-win” . and , of course , if I go to that show and don’t enjoy Sunny , the 30-40 minute opening set is still such a small price to pay to see Bob Seeger . now if Bob made me sit through FGL or kane brown or some other poser I may agree with your sentiment . but if its a REAL artist ..?……..all good by me .

You’re right Albert – The Eagles we’re smart to have Chris Stapleton open for them in Dallas last summer. I was already a CS fan but lots of people sitting around me were like “who is this guy? and he’s awesome!” So I know he picked some new fans that night – old cosmic rockers like me.

you never know where or when you’ll discover a terrific artist ( trigger has turned us all on to a truckload ) or how you may be introduced to a genre of music you hadn’t paid a lot of attention to . happens all the time if your radar is working ….

Not true at all. His fans raves about her performance! She killing it on the road with her….

Jeff,
No need for anyone to call you narrow-minded because you have already admitted it. Be it country, rock ‘n’ roll, blues, gospel, R&B, jazz, hip-hop, folk, reggae or countless other genres and sub-genres, there’s a point where all that good stuff fits together. Are you one of those people who segregate their record collection?

She deserves all the success! Love her records and she was super gracious when I met her after a show a couple years ago.
March 12, 2019 @ 10:31 am
Sunny quietly showing how females can get it done without cryin’ and whinin’ about their plight.
March 12, 2019 @ 10:34 am
“Once signed to Big Machine Records…” Sounds like it’d be a perfect time for her to sign with a new label, say, Bloodshot Recor…

Was at the Frisco show and it seemed like she fit right in as the opening act. Her voice was able to carry a big venue and most of the 17K+ were in their seats when she hit the stage. Pretty sure she gained some new fans that night.

My first time checking out Sunny Sweeney today. I listened to her record, Trophy. Wow, she is a talented singer and song writer. Love her sound & style. Nothing pop about her. Songs are adult content none of that on the surface bubble gum pop shit. She has a new fan in me. Pass the pain & bottle by my bed are fantastic!
March 12, 2019 @ 6:14 pm
If you haven’t seen her life, you need to.
The music is good, but less country than on her records. No pedal steel or other instrumentation, just her and a small band. They have a great sound, but what makes the show is her banter. She’ll tell stories, make jokes, and engage in a way that few do anymore.

Bob Seger and Sunny what a night
March 13, 2019 @ 9:00 pm
Sunny Sweeney is amazing and should have been a star. Country radio was crazy not to play or embrace her. Her albums were really good and will never get the recognition they deserve.
