Tanya Tucker Reveals Details for First Record in 17 Years

Recently signed to Concord Music’s Fantasy Records, Tanya Tucker is readying the release of her first record in 17 years called While I’m Livin. Rumored and talked about in bits and pieces over the last few months, we now have all the details for the record co-produced by Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings set to be released August 23rd.

More than just a producer, Brandi Carlile, and her famous twin backup band of Tim Hanseroth and Phil Hanseroth also wrote seven of the 10 songs on the new album, including the final track, “Bring My Flowers Now” which was penned with Tanya Tucker too. However these weren’t just songs written by Brandi Carlile and the twins that they had laying around and happen to bring to Tanya Tucker, they were written specifically for Tanya Tucker by the trio. “It’s a musical biography of sorts about Tanya’s real life and the places she’s seen, and it’s narrated by the greatest country and western singer this side of Johnny Cash,” says Carlile.

Also of note from the track list is “The House That Built Me” written by Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin, and made famous by Miranda Lambert, and “High Ridin’ Heroes” by David Lynn Jones, which was once recorded as a duet with Waylon Jennings.  A new song has also been released ahead of the album called “The Wheels of Laredo” (listen below).

“Brandi is truly out of this world. She’s talented, smart, funny, never ever slows down and has a heart of gold,” says Tucker about the collaboration. “I just love her. She was like my shadow when we were in the studio. Every time I turned around, she was there. And Shooter, I’ve known him since he was a baby. He’s the one who brought us all together. So I’m ready to get this music out there because it’s different than anything I’ve ever done.”

Initially Shooter Jennings was to be the only producer on the record, but decided to bring Brandi Carlile in after starting the process. A camera crew followed Tanya through the recording of the album for a documentary being executive produced by Carlile to be called Delta Dawn Then and Now: The Return of Tanya Tucker.

“For some reason, in country music, we have a way of not telling legends they’re legends until they’re 80, when we could have told them when they were 60 and they would have still had 30 years to teach us and stay in the spotlight and stay relevant to us,” Brandi Carlile said back in February. “We wait until they’re so old, before we have these tributes for them, and it’s beautiful. But we should have done this for Willie when he was 60 and should have done this for Loretta when she was 60. So this record’s called ‘While I’m Living’ because I’ll be God-damned if we’re not going to tribute her while she’s living.”

With ten #1 hits, another eight #2’s, and 39 Top 10’s total, Tanya Tucker has logged an incredible career going all the way back to her first hit “Delta Dawn” when she was only 13-years-old in 1972. 2002’s Tanya to find the last time country icon Tanya Tucker released a proper album of new material; her classic covers album from 2009 called My Turn notwithstanding.
