There is always a chance a song entitled “Colorado” could be good, since its landscape is so inspiring and its history intriguing. It has been the muse for a lot of great songs in the past.

This was apparently the strategy of the three guys who wrote “Colorado.”
1. FGL wants people to believe this is a country album.
2. So let’s mention whiskey. All those old country guys love whiskey.
3. But don’t forget pot. Gotta appeal to the young folks too.
4. And the drinking and smoking should have something to do with a man being told his woman that she doesn’t love him. Doesn’t matter why she leaves or how he feels about being rejected, just that he’s going to get “Rocky Mountain high”.
5. But don’t feel sorry for him (FGL doesn’t want you to think they’re losers), because he has friends in Tennessee and Colorado (the whiskey and the pot, get it?). Hey may be alone in his honeymoon cabin, but he’s “chillin'” (the kids will love the urban slang). Go bro!
6. Let’s throw in a dig at all the hillbilly haters on websites like Saving Country Music: “These Appalachian folks / Probably think I’m losing it in these trees.”
7. And then end with a cool drug reference for the kids: “Jack’s still on the hill ’cause Jill ran away / But Jill’s got nothin’ on Jack and Jane.”
8. Use rhymes so bad a third-grader would be ashamed to claim them, and a boring tune with a gratuitous slide guitar now and then to show they’re really country.

Honestly, “Talk You Out of It” has that sort of laid back, pillowy feel that I just love and I can’t get enough of. But those skits look dire and it’s concerning that the good looking one has turned into Kid Rock.

Had the misfortune of seeing these clowns’ performance on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve about 1 a.m. at a New Year’s Eve party. Clown #1 (the shorter one) was wearing a bomber jacket that was camo at the top and hunter orange at the bottom with a pair of matching jogger pants and high-top sneakers. Is this some new Rural King X Justin Bieber collaboration? It looked like something L’il Yachty would wear to meet his girlfriend’s parents on the farm if he were starring in a remake of Son-In-Law.

You might laugh, but I think soon, you guys will be pining for the days when Florida Georgia Line and Luke Bryan were the worst things on the radio.
I grew up loving Dixie Chicks, Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, George Strait and Toby Keith and vividly remember how the old heads would complain about that all being “not real country” and that I should listen to Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash instead. While I didn’t mind that old stuff, I liked what I liked. And it was plenty country to me.
Which brings me to my point: Is Florida Georgia Line substantiative music? No. Are they traditional country? No.
But compared to the garbage coming from the Sam Hunt, Walker Hayes, Old Dominion, Kane Brown and Jerrod Niemann, Florida Georgia Line and Luke Bryan sound like Merle Haggard. At least when I hear FGL or Luke Bryan or Aldean on the radio, I think “this is party country or bro country” or whatever you want to call it. But it bears some resemblance to country. The Hunt/Hayes/Old Dominion/Kane Brown crowd is an abomination. I’d listen to mediocre songs like Simple or Colorado a million times before I’d listen to anything coming out from that metrosexual trash.
altaltcountry
January 2, 2019 @ 3:32 pm
I don’t listen to the radio, but if the only new country music were from Florida Georgia Line and their ilk, I’d just listen to the old stuff. And “old” includes artists that go way back before Willie and Johnny.
I’d much rather listen to honest, creative musicians who diverge wildly from traditional country music (like the Lucinda Williams-Charles Lloyd collaboration) than to pale imitations who seek a quick profit by paying lip service to the greats.
BN
January 3, 2019 @ 8:07 am
I agree with you though they sound nothing like Merle. Fgl is transitioning into the other group you mentioned with their more recent stuff. Id be okay with them if they stayed more to their anything goes album by style. Best country sounding mainstream today’s is Luke’s combs and Jason Aldean.

90s country, despite what old-timers will tell you, was the pinnacle of country music. Varied melodies, sharp lyrics and a collection of male and female vocalists.
altaltcountry
January 3, 2019 @ 12:33 pm
As much as I like the old artists, I don’t think there was ever a pinnacle in terms of quality–certainly not in the 90’s. The tradition of varied melodies, sharp lyrics, as well as participation by female vocalists / musicians, goes back well before the 90’s, and it has never let up. There are probably as many good country musicians today as ever. They’ve just been ignored by the general public since the 90’s, but that’s starting to change. And I predict the upcoming Ken Burns documentary series on country music will draw people back to the great figures of the past, as well as helping new fans appreciate the talented performers of today.

By your standards, there is no external / eternal truth. All the old country music is bad, the new country music (as exemplified by FGL) is good.
If that’s the case, then 10 years from now (20 tops), you’ll be on whatever the equivalent of SCM (or Twitter or whatever) is, griping about the good old days when FGL played real country music and how the new stuff is a crock.
Of course, both scenarios are wrong. People today still listen to Merle Travis (or Merle Haggard or whoever from the past) because their music is timeless. And people will still be listening to Merle Travis etc. 20 years from now. It’s pop(ular) acts like FGL who will be sitting on the ash heap of oblivion with pseudo-talent like Sammy Kaye and Tiffany and Vanilla Ice and Kenny G. Enjoy the present while you can; your future’s going to be crap.

How does any of this convince me that FGL’s music is anything but forgettable pop garbage?
1.) God doesn’t send people to earth to do what FGL is “Doing”, unless He’s trolling us…
2.) This site has a strong history of music criticism. Judgement (critical, not heavenly) is a natural and important part of the ecosystem here. Bad acts deservedly go through the ringer.
3.) Knowing them or their families and hanging out have nothing to do with their music, although their privileged, suburban background does make me wonder about their country cred.
4.) Having an expensive house and owning a business do not make them better than anyone, especially from a Christian view. Again, this says nothing about the quality of their music.
5.) And did you know they worked hard to get there??? I’m sure they did, just like everyone who tries to make a living from music. But based on their “act” and the quality of their music, I’d guess they spent a lot more time learning how to market themselves and schmooze the right people than they spent honing their craft. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe God sent them here to shine a light on themselves through the holy spirit of auto-tune. But I doubt it.

I don’t hate FGL or Keane Brown for making the kind of music they make. I don’t hate their fans for liking this kind of music. I hate the brainwashing of the public by marketers and promoters and programmers to prefer vapid pop over music with real soul. If FGL were as obscure as Ray Wylie Hubbard is and RWH was as popular as FGL is, I would overlook FGL without a complaint, the way you ignore a bad smell in a supermarket.
But thanks for the observation about vegans–I’ll be sure to post “Catfish Nuggets” on all the vegan Facebook pages I can find.

The people here who hate FGL aren’t wasting their time, we come here because we are fans of good music and enjoy reading about and listening to good music. Once every few articles is an opportunity to hate on crappy mainstream acts like FGL, and doing so is usually fun and hopefully educational for culture-less people who actually consider FGL to be “artists.” The only people wasting their time are idiots who come to a site called Saving Country Music and try to defend FGL while making no attempt to understand the main audience of the site.

Indeed , Steel . The defenders of FGL and modern ‘country’ music could avail themselves of a priceless COUNTRY music education by ‘tuning in’ to SCM on a regular basis rather than just jumping in when they don’t like hearing their faves called out .

The Jason DeRulo song will probably be #1 on Billboard Hot Country Songs for 62 weeks.

Gosh. I sure hope one of them songs are about tailgates, trucks, repeated uses of the word “girl,” pointless mentions of “good ol country classic songs,” and dirt roads.

19 songs?! LOL! There is something to be said for limited space. Only so much vomit will fit in one bucket.

I can’t put into words how mad their existences make me. In fact, fuck it, I’m flying a 48 star flag because fuck Florida and fuck Georgia.
