Turnpike Troubadours Release Surprise Single “Come As You Are”
This story has been updated (see below).
No, it’s not a Nirvana cover, but it is quite a surprise from the Turnpike Troubadours, who usually tend to leave their fans salivating for new music between album releases with agonizing impatience. Without pretense or explanation, the Oklahoma natives dropped a new single called “Come As You Are” on Friday, and it has folks all abuzz and for good reason.
The soft, slow, steel guitar-driven tune is classic Troubadours, with Evan Felker’s signature vocals and melodic wisdom, and a sentiment easy to connect with immediately.
Inquiries to the Turnpike Troubadours camp about the nature of the single release were not immediately returned. The troupe released their latest, self-titled record via Thirty Tigers on September 18th, 2015. Turnpike usually takes three or so years between releases, making the new single a bit of a surprise, though it doesn’t necessarily mean a new album is on the way just yet. The Turnpike Troubadours song “The Bird Hunters” won Saving Country Music’s 2015 Song of the Year.
So far the song only appears to be available through streaming outlets, but we’ll update you if it shows up for download. Until then we’ll have this puppy on repeat.

The song is the latest installment in Bruce Robison’s The Next Waltz studio series. It was co-written by Evan Felker, and Old 97’s frontman Rhett Miller.

They played this tune for the first time at the show at Nashville’s Cannery Ballroom. Great stuff. This band is as consistently good as they come!

This song makes me cringe. I don’t get the whole TT thing. I tried.

Your life makes me so very, very sad. Not a judgment, just a legitimately honest assessment of your very existence on this earth.

Because I don’t like a song, I shouldn’t live? A world is in a really sad state for you to say something like that.

Don’t think he meant that. He was just sad that you are missing out on TT I guess. They are one of those rare bands I can listen to without skipping a single song. To each his own though. If you don’t like em, you don’t like em

^^ This guy gets it. Talking about the band, not the song. Also, I’d recommend you google “hyperbole.” Or not, whatever your preference

Vinny doesn’t get people not getting Turnpike Troubadours. They’ve been carrying the scene since Ragweed called it quits. Everything they put out is on point and their live shows leave others in the dust.

Come as you are, as you were, As I want you to be . . . Oh NOT a Nirvana cover. I’ll have to give this a listen after work. Sounds like it will be great!

Well that’s one way to turn around an otherwise shitty Friday at work. Can’t wait to see these guys again next weekend in KC!

I can’t freaking wait! I was all-in on going when I heard they were hitting KC, but then I saw their openers and just about lost my shit. Just one more week to go!

Saw them last weekend in Newport, KY and as y’all can imagine, it was the best concert I’ve ever been to. They played this song about halfway through the show and as soon as I heard the first little bit of it, I was hooked. The best act in country music delivers yet again.
As for the next album…I made friends with their sound guy and talked to him quite a bit before the show, so I asked when it might come out. He told me that all the songs were written for it, they just had to find a time when they weren’t touring to record it; however, he said not to get too excited, because they would probably still stick to the 2-3 year timeframe to make sure they get it right.
Either way…The Turnpike Troubadours rock.

They played the song at House of Blues – Houston, this past Friday night. Was very pleasantly surprised. Whole show was great.

I heard them play this at the KC show on Saturday, and I enjoyed it. On the other hand, RC sang another new song with a chorus about getting drunk, high and loud. I love RC, and hope they have him sing more, but it sounds like some generic Hank Jr reject. One of the major reasons I love their songs is the subtle songwriting, and I hope it doesn’t represent a shift in focus. It was a great show, though, and I’d probably go back to see them play even if their new album was garbage.
