Tyler Childers Tour Dates Selling Out As Fast As They’re Added
Not since the emergence of Sturgill Simpson have we seen an independent country artist explode in popularity the way we’re witnessing Tyler Childers do at the moment. As new tour dates continue to be added, many are selling out immediately, while other dates in other venues and markets are being added to meet demand, and some stops upgraded to bigger places to accommodate fans.
Recently announced multi-night stops at the Exit/In in Nashville and Gruene Hall in Texas have already sold out, as have two nights at separate venues in Atlanta, Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, as well as shows on the West Coast, in Canada, the Midwest, and parts in between. If you don’t have tickets for a show in your area, get them now because it’s likely to sell out. This also may be your last opportunity to see Tyler Childers in a smaller venue. Over half of his currently-announced North American tour dates are sold out. There’s a 17-night run in his current schedule where all nights are sold out aside from 2 nights just added, which will probably sell out soon.
Tyler Childers released his latest album Purgatory produced by Sturgill Simpson in August of 2017 to high praise, including being named the Saving Country Music Album of the Year. Since then the steam behind his ascent has only increased, prompting Childers to be nominated for Emerging Artist of the Year at the upcoming Americana Music Awards in September.

I got to see him with just 170 other people at the Lollapalooza aftershow here in Chicago. Can’t believe he’s back so soon to play a sold out crowd at Thalia! Looking forward to being able to say “I saw him when…” one day soon!

Some of the markets he’s playing he just played, and he’s still selling them out. He played Texas earlier this summer, and he sells out two nights at Gruene Hall immediately.

I never even heard this show was happening. Where’d you hear about it Megan and when did tickets even go on sale? I know Whitey is playing Thalia in October. THAT I heard about!!

The Thalia show was one of the shows that was added recently because of the swelling demand. It wasn’t announced when initially announced his October dates earlier this summer.

The show he did in Pittsburgh earlier this year had to be moved to the larger section of the venue (from 200 people capacity to 22,000) because demand was so high and he almost sold out the larger venue. He was fantastic.

I was there at Stage AE in Pittsburgh…It was originally scheduled for the 500 person “club” part of the venue and was moved to the 2,400 person indoor stage area. It had to be almost sold out…amazing show.

Saw him here in Nashville at The Basement for one of his residency shows last fall, then a few months later at the larger Basement East, then opening for Margo Price at the Ryman this spring, all within eight months.
Pretty soon he’ll be headlining the Ryman for multiple nights.

He sold out in Detroit! I lived up there for 7 years. I’m going up there for that show with some old friends. We had to buy the tickets on the secondary market for triple the price because we dragged our feat. It will be the third time this year I’ve seen him in concert.
I’m holding out to see what Hank III and Sturgill does with new music, but it’s nit a stretch to say he’s my new favorite.

Also, the resellers are causing some of these sellouts. Tickets for his show here in Morgantown (a very small venue) show were listed at $400 on Vivid.

The Troubadour in LA has a capacity of 500. He sold that out in a few days without room for a rollover date. Next time through town, hopefully we’ll see a bounce to the 1,200-capacity Fonda or pull in a solid support act and take on the 2,000-capacity Wiltern.

Does an artist like him make any real money playing this many dates at these types of venues? Or is this just cutting your teeth for bigger and better things? I hope he’s reaping some financial benefits from this surge in popularity.
Big Cat
August 21, 2018 @ 5:17 pm
hell yea they do. Real for them. Bands play 25-50 people gigs to make money. That’s how they live. Selling 2,000 tix for a headline gig is a big pay day for an artist like Tyler.
Then you add on album promotion, grass roots fan base growth, etc.
In 2.5 year span I talked to sturgill working a merch booth to seeing him at a sold out 5,000 seat theatre. Tyler appears on same path.

Tyler Childers is laying groundwork. When you’re selling out dates left and right, this is data that is then used to secure larger opportunities in those markets in the coming years. They want to play venues that are JUST too small, and keep prices cheap so they sell out. Also by touring a lot and playing in front of a bunch of people, you’re codifying your fan base. This is also faciliated by playing smaller venues so you don’t lose the intimacy with fans. This is a very similar approach they took with Sturgill Simpson, and it was very effective. Also unlike some of the swelling Texas music acts, Tyler’s impact is being seen coast to coast as opposed to just regionally. He releases a new album and sales are strong and it’s well-received, watch the hell out.
…and he and his band are still doing well I’m sure. It’s a grind, but he’s investing in his future. Once he’s got the fan base like Sturgill, he can play 40-80 dates a year, still be seen by his fans, and support his family.
Big Cat
August 21, 2018 @ 6:22 pm
Agreed. Grind is the best description.
All your points are dead on but if he’s not putting good money (good being compared to what he did previously) in his pocket gigging 1,000-2,000 seats he needs to fire some people. My point above was a lot of musicians make a living playing these venues….. Understanding that might not be his main objective at this time.
JD
August 21, 2018 @ 6:50 pm
He’s definitely making some really good money with this run right now. Jack White doesn’t pay peanuts to his openers and the 1-1.5K venues usually net someone ~8-12K a night in my experience.
Trigger
August 21, 2018 @ 10:07 pm
Tyler Childers has the same team behind him as Sturgill did: Label = Thirty Tigers, Booking Agent = Jonathan Levine at Paradigm Talent Agency, Publicist = Asha Goodman. I have no doubt they have a strategy in place, and playing so many shows is part of it. If demand is increasing 3x in certain markets in 6 months, clearly they’re doing something right. And I’m sure Childers’ pocketbook is doing just fine.

That’s the one thing holding me back from buying a couple tickets. Generally, early December isn’t terribly cold, but you never really know. A couple years ago it went from being a muggy 80 degrees in the morning down to the high teens at night, and this was in late November/early December.

I’m not sure why you think Whitey Morgan has some kind of fake accent. I don’t hear much of anything, and what little there may be is probably due to his family’s history in Kentucky. His grandpa moved to Michigan from Kentucky for work, and he played in a honkytonk band with other southern folks that moved north.

Picked up my tickets for the 9:30 Club show in DC (this October) as soon as they went on sale a while back. Glad I did. Sold out now. He played a 400 capacity venue, Rock & Roll Hotel, here just this past March (missed that) and now sells out a 1,200 capacity venue months in advance.
Tripled his live audience in a single market in under six months, selling out venues that primarily cater to a rock audience. I’m genuinely curious about his fan-base, because he’s not exactly prolific when it comes to album releases and out of a dozen music blogs I read (across various genres) I’ve only seen him covered substantially here (I first heard about him here), and maybe NPR. What’s happening?

August 21, 2018 @ 2:29 pm
Tyler’s voice comes from the mountains. He’s from a real place, writes about real life, and sings and plays really well, along with other musicians who play really well. They play country music, too, which they appear to know and enjoy. His songs have already become classics, and he appears to be writing more. It’s a beautiful, living, growing thing. Not manufactured.
Nashville(TM) wouldn’t understand.
Tex Hex
August 21, 2018 @ 2:49 pm
I know, that’s plain to see/hear, but even the most beautiful trees fall silently in forests – and nobody is the wiser. In other words, even the best artists/musicians need and benefit from a little marketing and media coverage, or at least a breakout moment that fires people up – but I suppose his popularity is entirely based on word of mouth from gigging so hard? I mean, damn. Ok.
JD
August 21, 2018 @ 3:06 pm
He gets a lot of pub from Facebook and Twitter groups dedicated to good music, like specific fan groups and I hate pop country like sites. He’s also done a great job finding other fans through his strategic festivals (very similar to Sturgill), showing up at places like Lolla, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Newport Folk, etc… and more recently opening for Jack White where nearly all of 10kish people there were new to him.
Tex Hex
August 22, 2018 @ 7:28 am
Good points, regarding the strategic festival gigs. Quickest way to get in front of a large, diverse audience.
I literally don’t know anybody (personally) who’s even heard of Tyler Childers, except a few jam-band people who follow the rootsier artists like Widespread Panic, Bela Fleck, Greensky Bluegrass, etc. That crowd will find, latch onto, and follow an artist to the ends of the earth.
JD
August 21, 2018 @ 3:11 pm
Your comment “most beautiful trees fall silently in forest” sure is true for him though, as this guy has been writing and performing for about 10 years, before finally breaking out. That’s also why his live shows are so prolific, even though he only has one major release so far. His catalog is about 60 deep of songs he wrote and add another 30 or so covers that he’s performed.
I first saw him in front of 20 people only 18 months ago in Florida. There were only 3 groups of people at each show that knew of him and specifically came to see him (ours was 1/3). Crazy to see this meteoric rise.

You really make good points here.
I had knew who he was, but never realized what he was.
That first show (this coming October will be 5th time) my jaw was on the ground.
It was watching a complete seasoned vet in complete control with the perfect complimentary band behind him.
And he has so much good material, it is crazy.
His fans follow all the live recordings and stuff available on web.
There is some high quality stuff out there.
People know the words to everything that hasn’t been released but he has been playing.
It is really grass-roots and he is building a solid rabid fan base. both older and younger. He has quite the female following as well, a bit more than say Sturgill. He is going to have a long career.
I got to talk to him a couple times. him and his band.
He is a real nice fella, I wish him luck.

I moved from Nashville to DC in January. Missed the March show and I’ll be missing the October one for my wedding. I used to see a couple shows a month but all I’ve been able to do since I moved was Willie/Sturgill at the wharf. It’s a shame. Missing shooter tomorrow for a wife commitment as well. Getting old sucks

Nashville to DC? Welcome to town, and congrats on the nuptials!
I was at that Willie/Sturgill show too, and going to the Shooter show tomorrow. Never been to a seated “dinner club” style venue for a show before, so we’ll see.
Lots of good shows in the next few months.
Wheeler Walker Jr., Sarah Shook, Josh Headley, Dillon Carmichael, Chris Stapleton (w/ Brent Cobb and Marty Stuart), Ashley McBryde, JP Harris, Charley Crockett, Colter Wall, Randy Rogers etc.
Apart from the IMP venues, check out the schedules for Union Stage and Pearl Street Warehouse (both on the waterfront). Those spots seem to specialize in country/Americana.

Wayne “the train” Hancock is playing at City Winery in DC two weeks from today. The show is in the wine garden, whatever that means. Still haven’t bought tickets, but I’m itching to go.
I saw Childers at Rock N Roll and Songbyrd in Adams Morgan prior to that. I’ll be at the 9:30 show.
He hasn’t yet sold out 9:30, but Colter Wall is trying to make a similar surge – Songbyrd to U Street Music Hall to 9:30. Pretty insane.

Wayne Hancock at City Winery in DC? What a hoot. It’s like, invite the uppity wine tasting NPR crowd to see The Train. A very weird gig. Wayne is at home in honky tonks and dive bars, he’s never played to the wealthy elites at least as far as I can tell.

The reason you’re not seeing much press for Tyler Childers is because he’s not based in Nashville. Country media continues to consolidate to Nashville, and pays nearly myopic attention to Nashville artists. Margo Price gets two or three articles a week for tweets she writes about pot. Tyler Childers sells out the Exit/In on three consecutive nights, and not a word is spoken.
Also, his publicists likes to sit on her hands. Country media doesn’t do anything these days unless a publicist basically serves them the info ready to print.

Have you read the story in RS today? Agree wholeheartedly though Trig. Nashville music media in general is super myopic.
Trigger
August 24, 2018 @ 1:17 pm
Yes I did, and I thought it was a good story. But even then the myopic Nashville perspective was brought to it by presenting Margo Price as a bigger, more established artist signing off on Tyler Childers from an expert perspective, as if her name is needed to lend credence to Childers. Tyler’s record has sold twice was Margo Price’s record has. His streaming numbers are 4-times was Margo’s are. His live draw is double or triple what hers is. And yet he gets 1/4 of the press coverage, and has had none of the national media opportunities Margo has enjoyed. This is not a knock on Margo Price. But to myopic Nashville media Margo Price is the biggest name in independent country music at the moment, where to the actual listening population, it’s people like Tyler Childers, Cody Jinks, the Turnpike Troubadours, and others setting the pace. I’m seeing Nashville media continually become more myopic and insular due to Twitter, which lends to echo chambers. I just read this week in Rolling Stone that JP Harris is a “new artist” we need to keep an eye on. JP Harris has been huge in east Nashville for years. I reviewed a record from him six years ago. These people think that just because something’s new to them, it must be new to everyone. In my opinion, it’s insulting to call an artist like JP Harris “new.”
Again, I’m glad for the article and I thought it was a good one. But even then Rolling Stone couldn’t help to bring up Margo Price.

“yet he gets 1/4 of the press coverage”
She’s a woman, not a southern white male. Surely you know this. RS wants Margo Price to be Americana’s Barbra Streisand. But she doesn’t have the talent, so the pump has to be primed. Constantly.
