Wheeler Walker Jr. Crashes The 2016 CMT Awards

The CMT Awards may be off the hot seat as the dumbest music awards show around now that FOX has brought back their asinine American Country Countdown Awards, but it still feels like an exercise in stupidity and futility if there ever was one. Blake Shelton won a made-up award for being the “Social Superstar of the Year” just so he could get some face time, and there had to be a record number of non-country performers in 2016 for any country awards show ever: Pharrell Williams, Fifth Harmony, Cheap Trick, Elle King, Pitbull, Luke Bryan, no wait Luke Bryan’s officially country, but you get the point—it was easily the most non-country “country” music awards show in history.

One of the few saving graces for the show beyond a Chris Stapleton performance of “Parachute” and a scant, 1-minute tribute to Merle Haggard via Dierks Bentley, was that foul-mouthed country music comedic country singer Wheeler Walker Jr.  took time from his current tour and crashed the shindig and offered side splitting photos, updates, and commentary throughout the night.

Wheeler Walker first showed up on the red carpet, and was trolling folks through his Twitter and Instagram accounts. Then throughout the presentation, he was offering rolling commentary from the bleachers. One of the most hilarious moments had to be when Wheeler Walker Jr. mistook Trisha Osborne—the mother of the country duo Brothers Osborne—for Loretta Lynn.

“Well we didn’t win any awards but our mom did get ‘mistaken’ for Loretta Lynn by Wheeler Walker Jr. Take that,” the Brothers Osborne said in response on Twitter.

But possibly the best Bon Mot of the night occurred when Wheeller Walker Jr. sat in stone silence as Florida Georgia Line performed their current hit “H.O.L.Y.”

There weren’t many reasons to pay attention to the 2016 CMT Awards, but Wheeler Walker Jr. made the exercise a bit more tolerable.
