William Michael Morgan Speaks Out About the State of Country Music
William Michael Morgan is not just sticking up for real country music with his music, he’s doing it with his words as well. After pop country site Taste of Country posted a tweet asking, “Who’s Saving ‘Real’ Country Music?” with a host of artists tagged on it, including Jon Pardi, Kacey Musgraves, Midland, Mo Pitney, Aaron Watson, Cody Johnson, Brandy Clark, Chris Stapleton, Ashley Monroe, the Pistol Annies, Sturgill Simpson, Justin Moore, Cody Jinks, and William Michael Morgan himself, the Warner Bros-signed artist responded,
“I was debating whether to speak my mind or not. I decided to. I am just gonna say that the state of country music at the moment is far from salvageable. It will take real singers. With real songs to turn this around. But I’m a traditionalist.”
One Twitter commenter named Kirsty Wolstencroft responded, “See now that’s where you lose me. The “state of country music“ has never been better or more diverse! It’s amazing to be able to say I can listen to it all and still get the same buzz from Cody Johnson to Kane Brown without the one you can’t have the other and it’s no bad thing.”
William Michael Morgan responded succinctly, “Yeah. Some people like diversity. And some people like country music.”
Kirsty Wolstencroft then responded, “And some people appreciate the balance, the resurgence of traditional country can be found on every playlist .. mainstream playlists .. I know because I listen and it’s great, but when people start disrespecting other country artists their own appeal gets lost. Celebrate it all.”
William Michael Morgan again responded, “Yeah, and some people like country music.”
Morgan also later tweeted out that he would like to write and record with Margo Price.
The 25-year-old from Vicksburg, Mississippi has been releasing a series of songs ahead of an upcoming sophomore record, saying that how the respective songs are received may impact the direction of the album. Though some of the songs feel a little more radio friendly like “Tonight Girl,” others like “Brokenhearted” and “Talking To A Girl” are more traditional. Though William Michael Morgan might not be the second coming of Whitey Morgan or Cody Jinks, compared to the rest of the mainstream, traditional or “real” would be good description.
…and then there’s this photo, snarfed off the internet somewhere of Morgan showing off his true colors:

Yes, I am a country fan. I certainly appreciate the traditional sound of country music but I am not an expert by any mean and wasn’t exposed to country music until 10 years ago. Having said that I am not fool either. I can distinguish between real country music (WMM being one of them) and fake country music (95% of radio content).

I’ve said this here before. I don’t know much about William Michael Morgan, but when I saw him play the Opry, he demonstrated a lot of respect for the stage by his choice of songs, the way he carried himself, and the way he dressed. Not everything he does is up my alley, but I wish him all the best. I grow weary of watching young performers come out on stage at the Opry dressed and acting as if it’s Uncle Ralphie’s Funny Playtime Show.
Or maybe it’s just me.

Let’s just hope he backs up what he says with his new music. I’m a fan of Clay Walker from the time he came on to the scene in the mid 90’s but oh man his new album falls right in line with all the other stuff out now days. He was quoted saying similar things back about 4 years ago. Following the trend to try to stay relative instead of just staying true to the sound that made him.
Melissa
January 24, 2019 @ 9:35 am
I agree with your Clay Walker assessment. I grew up listening to 90s country and was excited to hear he released a new record. I have listened to it twice now and am pretty disappointed- like you said it’s more or less the same type of music you will find on country radio now days. If he is looking for radio success I think he will get it. There are a few pop songs on his record I think will do good on radio. But unfortunate to me he didn’t offer up any actual country music.

really?! Just curious, Why do you think that?
As far as I can recall without looking it up his last record was ‘Fall’ and I remember specifically the singles Fall and ‘Fore She Was Mama did pretty good on radio. Not sure if anything else from that record made it to radio or any charts though.
Melissa
January 24, 2019 @ 1:03 pm
Ok, I googled him. Apparently he had a record more recent that I forgot about.. She Wont Be Lonely Long in 2010. There were 4 songs that made it to radio and on the billboard chart however only the title track appeared to do good.

I think he’s up against the ‘ageism/trad ‘ thing Melissa …along with the conditioning thing of a younger market . I LOVE Clay and have that album ( She Won’t Be Lonely ) …some GREAT writes on there and the man has a great voice . But again , I’d be surprised if he got enough label support ( like AJ or George or Chesnutt , Joe Nichols etc.. ) to get this record off the ground . I hope to hell I’m wrong …I really do .

Taste of Country already posted her name too, and since she posted a Tweet, it’s already a part of the public record.
And believe it or not, I feel like she made some important points and she represents an opinion about country music that deserves to be heard right beside mine, yours, and William Michael Morgan’s. Not everything is a flame war. We can discuss these matters without them getting nasty, or at least we should be able to.

That female quoted is well known in the UK for her very strong views on Country music, she is no fan of the traditional artists and has always argued back, quite rudely, with people that have tried to discuss things with her. Its ended up with full blown arguments, bordering on bullying. While she comes across here as slightly being balanced, I have been on the other end of some pretty bad comments previously, I can tell you!

I’m kind of perplexed why he felt like he needed to make these statements after that specific Tweet. I would be honored to be included in a list with the majority of the artists tagged. I guess he used it as a launching point to speak his mind since he got a little bit of spotlight put on him.
Given that, I actually in a way agree with the Twitter commenter’s point. I don’t care for the vast majority of commercial or “radio” country, but I’ve never wanted to ever force something away. I know there’s an audience that enjoys that stuff. I just have always wanted good opportunities for the type of acts that are usually featured on this site. A place at the table, if you would. Country music is very salvageable. We had three great releases this past Friday that demonstrated how diverse (yeah, they are all from male acts) music-wise country music is. I go to shows. I see the crowds and the energy there. Country music is thriving- just not on the radio.
Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, though. William Michael Morgan has made some good music, and I hope he continues to do so.

WMM lost me with the release of the 101 songs in the last couple of month. Throwing all the songs against the wall to see what sticks can’t be the solution.
On the other side…the pressure to release radio-friendly stuff must be tough & WMM is still a young guy with a Waylon-tattoo, a cowboy hat, one hit single & a so-so selling album.

I’m pretty tired of hearing every artist’s commentary on “the state of country Music” or the so called lists of people who are “saving country music”. Or the laughable rolling stone “10 country artists you need to know” lists that come out every two weeks. That steers clear of so many artists playing country music. Just make quality records with quality songwriting. There’s plenty of people still writing and recording tasteful country music. Many of us are digging deeper, beyond the canned mama tried licks and Waylon four on the floor tough guy posturing. This website is evidence enough that there’s a really good thing happening. Might I add, Thanks in large part to the existence of this website.

That list from Taste of Country of the “Real” artists “Saving Country Music” was so indicative of the mainstream perspective on independent country music, where performers like Sturgill Simpson, Ashley Monroe, and Cody Jinks are considered underground.

So , my oldest son got married New Year’s Eve. At the reception he and his bride sang an old country duet , it was beautiful. But before that the Dj played new country and you had the bride and a bunch of guests out on the dance floor country line dancing. It was awesome!! The best of Country I’d say.
When i started listening to country in the early 90’s, it didnt sound like the 70’s country. Grow up! There is room for everyone. If your music doesnt make the top 10, maybe the listening audience isnt in the mood for it. Try again.
Its the listening audience you need to get to like your music, and bad mouthing how someone else makes music is actually insulting those fans your trying to reach, they wont give you the time of day, let alone not switch the radio station when your music comes on.
There is room for everyone!!

Pierre Brunelle
January 24, 2019 @ 2:52 pm
Excuse me?
You know that labels are pushing the singles so that they get to the top 10. Top 10 should be the ultimate benchmark for quality songs but let’s be honest, top 10 and top 40 are pretty terrible. We have all the evidence in front of us.
It’s a formula product that doesn’t want to make you think. that’s why the lyric is generally simple and repetitive and the instrumental is predictable (fake claps, fake drum beats, etc). Rarely we get a quality song on the radio. It’s easy to distinguish those because you can contrast it with the next songs. Humble and kind would be an exception to the rule.
The saddest part is that they claim that they respect diversity but in fact they don’t. Diversity means we play real country music, real R&B, real hip hop: a diversity of choices. Instead we have a blended product that fails in every category.

No. There is not “room for everyone.”
When I turn on a country music station, I am not expecting everyone to channel the energy of “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” But I would at LEAST like to feel like I am listening to something resembling country music played with actual instruments and vocals that don’t sound like someone swallowed an auto-tune machine. Sadly, all we get is a rehash of crappy 2000s pop and R&B these days masquerading as “country music.”
Then again, I have given up all hope that it is ever going to get any better. So I go online and listen to country music that actually sounds like country music. Not this Radio Disney bullshit that passes for it today.

I don’t think anyone should be putting down WMM. Is he going to save country music? No…. But his music is traditional, he uses real instruments, and has decent lyrics. I loved his single “Vinyl “. There’s absolutely no “diversity” in the modern mainstream country music scene. All that crap sounds exactly the same. The 1980’s were a “diverse” era for country music. You had guys like Skaggs, Strait, Yoakam, Travis, Gosdin, and Ricky Van Shelton holding it down for the traditionalists, and others like Steve Wariner, Earl Thomas Conley, Alabama, Dan Seals, and Conway Twitty who were able to successfully blend country with pop flourishes of the era and still make music that was tolerable. All of those artists, despite their different styles, were able to achieve great success within the scene. The same CANNOT be said of country music in the 2010’s. Do traditionalists still exist? Yes, they absolutely do. And they are nowhere to be found on those Nashville stations or Spotify playlists.

There are 2 kinds of listeners:
Those who enjoy the pleasure you get from working hard to appreciate what the musician is trying to do, and those who want publicists and popular magazines and radio stations to digest the worm and regurgitate it into their mouths.
There’s more diversity between any two Porter Wagoner albums than among all the songs on any pop country playlist.

“Real” country music keeps changing as well, I feel. I was listening to a classic country station at work yesterday. Shania Twain came on and I thought, “wow, this sounds pretty good.” I’d have never thought that 10 years ago, but on a relative scale, it is ascending.

Are you saying “real country music changes” or “what we think of as real country music changes”? Both could be valid.

Another former (?) traditional leaning artist is back…Easton “A Little More Country Than That” Corbin. New single is called “Somebody’s Gotta Be Country”.
Should be easy for WMM to pick the right track now…as long as the word “country” is in the title.

He’s absolutely right!!!! Imposters pretending to play country music. Listen to ” murder on music row” George strait and Alan Jackson explains it perfectly there’s no hope for today’s country as they call it so stick that diversity up your ass and if your going to be on country radio play country music!!!
