William Michael Morgan Speaks Out About the State of Country Music

William Michael Morgan is not just sticking up for real country music with his music, he’s doing it with his words as well. After pop country site Taste of Country posted a tweet asking, “Who’s Saving ‘Real’ Country Music?” with a host of artists tagged on it, including Jon Pardi, Kacey Musgraves, Midland, Mo Pitney, Aaron Watson, Cody Johnson, Brandy Clark, Chris Stapleton, Ashley Monroe, the Pistol Annies, Sturgill Simpson, Justin Moore, Cody Jinks, and William Michael Morgan himself, the Warner Bros-signed artist responded,

“I was debating whether to speak my mind or not. I decided to. I am just gonna say that the state of country music at the moment is far from salvageable. It will take real singers. With real songs to turn this around. But I’m a traditionalist.”

One Twitter commenter named Kirsty Wolstencroft responded, “See now that’s where you lose me. The “state of country music“ has never been better or more diverse! It’s amazing to be able to say I can listen to it all and still get the same buzz from Cody Johnson to Kane Brown without the one you can’t have the other and it’s no bad thing.”

William Michael Morgan responded succinctly, “Yeah. Some people like diversity. And some people like country music.”

Kirsty Wolstencroft then responded, “And some people appreciate the balance, the resurgence of traditional country can be found on every playlist .. mainstream playlists .. I know because I listen and it’s great, but when people start disrespecting other country artists their own appeal gets lost. Celebrate it all.”

William Michael Morgan again responded, “Yeah, and some people like country music.”

Morgan also later tweeted out that he would like to write and record with Margo Price.

The 25-year-old from Vicksburg, Mississippi has been releasing a series of songs ahead of an upcoming sophomore record, saying that how the respective songs are received may impact the direction of the album. Though some of the songs feel a little more radio friendly like “Tonight Girl,” others like “Brokenhearted” and “Talking To A Girl” are more traditional. Though William Michael Morgan might not be the second coming of Whitey Morgan or Cody Jinks, compared to the rest of the mainstream, traditional or “real” would be good description.

…and then there’s this photo, snarfed off the internet somewhere of Morgan showing off his true colors:
