New music from the Turnpike Troubadours is on the way, though we already knew that to some extent. Now there is an indication that it could be on the way sooner than later.

On Friday (4-14), a new song from the band called “Mean Old Sun” populated on TouchTunes machines at bars and other locations across the United States. As Turnpike fans showed up at their favorite watering hole and went to play a Turnpike song, they noticed the new selection in their catalog. The song came with blacked out cover art, and was attributed to Bossier City Records, which is the band’s imprint on Thirty Tigers.

Saving Country Music’s policy is to not spoil any surprises from artists and bands, even for a good story. Nonetheless, multiple outlets have posted articles about the leak, so Saving Country Music reached out to Turnpike Troubadours management about the issue. Management said they had no comment, but there will be official word about new music “sometime soon.”

The Turnpike Troubadours were rumored to have been in FAME studios in Muscle Shoals in February of 2022, with some now linking Shooter Jennings to their new project. Bassist RC Edwards also confirmed in the summer of 2022 that the band had been in the studio and writing new songs.

Evan Felker played a new song in Houston on May 7th, 2022 called “Cat In The Rain,” and recently at an album release show for Lance Roark, RC Edwards said a new song Roark and himself wrote “might be on that new Turnpike record.”

If anything, a new Turnpike Troubadours single is well past due, let alone an announcement of a new album. Perhaps the misfire on TouchTunes either is a premonition of whats to come, or will hasten the process. Any new music would be the first from the Turnpike Troubadours since 2017’s A Long Way From Your Heart, and the first since their hiatus.

The Turnpike Troubadours are set to play the United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, TX on April 21st, with Dawes and Jamie Lin Wilson opening.
