Sturgill Simpson Announces 2017 Tour Dates
Sturgill Simpson was planning to take 2017 off due to the recent birth of his second child, and a sense that he had an opportunity to rest on his laurels a little bit. But then two huge Grammy nominations for Best Country Album and Album of the Year shook up those plans, and now the philosophy is to strike while the iron is hot. Ahead of Sunday’s Grammy Awards where Sturgill Simpson will also perform, he’s announced a slew of 2017 tour dates to go along with numerous festival appearances.
The new tour dates show Sturgill Simpson graduating from large-capacity theaters in some markets to full-sized amphitheaters, including the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado where he’ll play in late September, Austin 360 Amphitheater and Verizon Amphitheater in Texas where he tends to draw well, and the Amphitheater at the Warf in Alabama.
Other notable venues include playing Radio City Music Hall in New York on September 14th, and the famous Greek Theater in Los Angeles on October 6th. More dates may be added later, and so far no openers have been announced. “The performances will feature material from throughout Simpson’s catalog and is his way of thanking fans—both old and new—for a series of unprecedented years,” says the Sturgill Simpson camp.
NOTE: The dates from July 14th through July 16th look weird likely because Sturgill’s specific set times at the Sloss Music & Arts Festival and the Forecastle Festival have not been set yet, and so his calendar is showing all of the dates of the festivals. Tickets will go on sale February 16th. For more information on tour dates, click here.

The Atlanta date isn’t on the Fox Theater’s site yet so I followed the link to Sturgill’s page and you have to download a damn app to buy tickets. Surely I’m not the only one that is annoyed by that…

These dates are being posted well in advance of normal, likely to get them out before the Grammy Awards on Sunday. My guess is ticketing has not been set up yet, and may not be for some time. If I get any info on when tickets will go up for sale or additional dates, I’ll try to let folks know.

Does this mean new music? Or a second tour of a sailors guide?

There’s been no word on new music yet. The images and stuff associated with this tour appear to still be inspired by “A Sailor’s Guide.”

They must have had their baby like this week huh? I might have to go to sugar land tx show, I helped the stage riggers set beams for the rolling partition walls last year, the place is pretty Badass.(Stage rigger, lol, think they’re real riggers lmao.)
So that means even longer before we get any new music, I’ll bet he pushes out an exclusive something or other single, Otis Redding or Led Zeppelin cover, or song specifically for random movie sound track.

Just curious how often everyone thinks he should be releasing new music. His last album isn’t even a year old and most everyone steals the studio stuff. Why should artists rush out new music?

How’s he going to play Birmingham and Louisville the same day two days in a row?
Trigger
February 9, 2017 @ 11:14 pm
Because he’s Sturgill Simpson. Don’t doubt him.
Actually, those are festival dates, and my guess is they haven’t announced or decided what specific day Sturgill is going to play the festival, so all the dates of the two festivals he’s playing that weekend are showing up.

Plus the date he’s going to be in Atlanta, Friday, July 14. He’s going to be hustling. Trying to map out how many gigs I can get to. At least two are on the calendar. Hoping for three of the current ones and I assume he’ll add some Tennessee dates.

The DC area show is Merriweather Post Pavilion, which has a capacity of over 19,000, with maybe half of that seated. That’s a big jump up from D.A.R. Constitution Hall (3,700), where I saw him in October. I saw Stapleton and Isbell as co-headliners at Merriweather in June.

Yeah, I thought the same thing, meriweather is huge, it’s a really nice venue though. Most of the big names haven’t sold it out.
Jack Williams
February 10, 2017 @ 8:26 am
Yeah, I’m not sure that Stapleton/Isbell sold it out, although I think the seats were close to being filled by the type Stapleton played. I agree that it’s a very nice, charming venue. Much better than Jiffy Lube Live in NoVA, which is about half the distance away for me.

Interesting to see the various venues. In Portland, OR, where I am, he is playing the Schnitzer Music hall, which is an amazing historic theater, with a capacity of like 2,700. Will be great to see him in a small venue again, but I bet the tickets will be pricey.

It’d be nice to see him at DUKES baby.

Jiffy Lube stinks, I had a bunch of free tickets last year, and it was still barely worth it to go there (the two venues are roughly equidistant for me).

February 10, 2017 @ 11:22 am
Yes, it does. About twenty years ago, I went there for the first time and saw John Fogerty. It was a great show, but it took us about two hours to get out of the parking lot.

I’ll be interested to see that one. I thought the crowd was pretty lifeless at the Constitution Hall show. No problems with him moving on from that venue.
Jack Williams
February 10, 2017 @ 11:16 am
Well, for one, that place isn’t known for having great acoustics. I was in the third row for the Sturgill show, and so the band sounded pretty good to me. About six years ago, I saw Robert Plant and his Band of Joy (Buddy Miller, Patty Griffin, Darrell Scott, et al). I was on the floor about 25 rows back and the sound was pretty muddy. Yeah, not that great a concert venue.
Of the five times I’ve seen Sturgill, the most intense crowd and performance was at the 9:30 Club. Of course, he’s too big for that venue now.

Was really hoping for a Salt Lake City date. Saw him both times he’s toured here before and he chose to go to Montana instead of back to SLC last fall. Looks like a road trip to Denver is in my future. Seeing Cody Jinks next Thursday, can’t wait for that show.

Hoping he plays full Sailors Guide all the way thru like he did on recent tour — I missed seeing him on that tour and that’d be a cool way to hear the album.

I plan on seeing him in Grand Prairie and Red Rocks. For his shows, I prefer general admission (more rowdy, more fun) but the larger venues are full seating. Rather than all of ASGTE and Metamodern like the last tour, I hope he shuffles his whole catalog and rocks the house!

Can’t wait to see him at the wharf! I better start saving now for the $8 domestic tall boys…
