Chris Stapleton Booked as Musical Guest for ‘Saturday Night Live’
Well well well. The accolades for Chris Stapleton continue to pour in. The dude’s on one mother of a hot streak, and now he will attempt to reprise the magic he evoked on the CMA Awards back in November on the famed stage of Saturday Night Live on January 16th, according to the National Broadcasting Company.
The performance will come less than a month after Stapleton gave a rousing performance on NBC’s Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon where he left Questlove and the rest of America in shock. Perhaps Lorne Michaels was watching from the wing, or heard about the performance through the grapevine (the two shows tape in the same building in NYC), and decided he wanted some of that action. It once again proves the power of a Stapleton performance that he’d be given this shot on such short notice. SNL isn’t falling over itself to book Luke Bryan, that’s for sure.
The guest host for the Stapleton episode will be Adam Driver from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Chris Stapleton has taken his momentum from winning three CMA awards on November 4th, and hasn’t slowed down one bit. His Traveller album has now been certified gold by the RIAA, and continues to be one of the hottest selling albums in country. He recently sold out a three-show stint at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville within minutes. He was also just announced as one of the only country performaers at this year’s Coachella Festival in California. And along with an SNL performance, his multiple nominations at February’s Grammy Awards likely mean a nationally-televised performance there, along with whatever bump he may receive from winning one of the awards he’s nominated for. His recent high-profile television performances might also help to put him more on the Grammy map, and perhaps boost his chances to walk away with Album of the Year.
There’s no stopping this guy. The Saturday Night Live booking seals it: Chris Stapleton is the biggest artist in all of country music at the moment.

I think we’re living in the period of time we’ve hoped for for two years now, in which a traditional star starts tipping over the mainstream and making big waves.
I think a lot of people either don’t see it or don’t want to see it because they don’t want it to be Chris Stapleton.
We all have our ideal Country Music Savior, but Chris Stapleton doesn’t fit the mold of what most disenfranchised Country fans are looking for, meanwhile he just keeps doing what we hoped so many other artists would do.
I said in another article that the guy we were waiting for doesn’t exist. Nobody’s going to storm into Nashville with a Louvin Bros belt buckle and a Homer and Jethro tattoo and blow away the publishers with a performance of “Fool Such as I,” then get a record deal and start insulting Jason Aldean. As much as we want that character to show up in our darkest hour and right Country Music, that character doesn’t exist, and we’re so busy looking for him, and trying to mold other artists into what we want to see, that we’re completely overlooking the man who can actually, and is actually doing it.
Trigger
January 5, 2016 @ 10:06 am
I wouldn’t say Chris Stapleton doesn’t fit the mold for most. I would say he doesn’t fit the mold for some, but that “some” is quite vocal, and quite angry over this entire situation. But they’re a vocal minority.
Now with this SNL performance slot, it’s nearly a forgone conclusion that “Traveller” will be the best-selling record in country music in the last 18 months by the spring, if not before, like frequent-commenter Nadia predicted here a while back. Think about this: Chris Stapleton is arguably the biggest name in all of country music right now. I think that says a lot about where we are, and where we’re headed.

The people are upset because he’s an insider who’s flirted with the enemies of Country Music. The same thing happened to Anakin: everybody except Yoda thought he would do great good and instead he destroyed the Jedi Order. Stapleton’s Bro-Country offerings have scared a lot of people away from him, despite the fact (and I’ve used this analogy before) that if I take a crap, and somebody else takes my crap and turns it into an art sculpture, I’m not going to stop crapping, I’m going to get rich off the people who don’t know any better than to like crap. That’s the way it is with Stapleton; he isn’t out recording crap, he just lets somebody else, in their own ignorance, make him a lot of money. And unlike Dallas Davidson, to my knowledge, Stapleton has never defended his crap.

I’m happy for him. I saw him back in July at Willie’s Picnic and have been in love with his music since. He’s played big name shows even before his CMA sweep. It might be just how I’m interpreting the article, so I apologize if it’s not how you mean to sound, but it seems like you don’t think he deserves this recognition, purely because he’s written music for Thomas Rhett and Luke Bryan. Drink a Beer is a great song, and the lyrics to Crash and Burn are fantastically written. Plus, having these big name Nashville artists record his songs is just an easy paycheck. I wouldn’t care if Sam Hunt recorded a song I wrote. My name would get out there and I’d get a nice paycheck. Chris Stapleton should keep doing what he’s been doing. I don’t see him letting his label control how his music is recorded.
Trigger
January 5, 2016 @ 10:38 am
I’ve brought up Stapleton’s dubious songwriting credits before, but I don’t think that has any bearing here, and I hope I didn’t allude to anything I didn’t mean to in the article. If anything, I think his booking on SNL shows that Stapleton’s rise has nothing to do with “Music Row” manipulations or who he wrote songs for. You think SNL cares about any of that stuff? It has to do with the power of his performance. THAT is what has gotten Stapleton here. One stellar performance after another has made him the biggest star in country right now.
Steve
January 5, 2016 @ 11:00 am
I completely agree with what you’re saying. I’m just thinking back to your articles like “The Case Against Chris Stapleton As Country Music”™s Savior” when I say what I say. This specific article didn’t say much about what I originally stated, but I guess it’s the vibe I’ve felt you have towards him since. I’m more than happy to admit that I’m wrong and misread what you’re saying. I am also happy that SNL can easily say “Fuck what Nashville thinks we should play. This is who we should have on the show.” I just like that I’m getting to hear from him more and more.

I think Chris Stapleton has a little baggage. I also think that baggage in the long run is virtually inconsequential at this point. I think Stapleton should be judged on his current, and future moves. But the Stapleton backlash is very real, and I think the best way to address it is not by trying to sweep it under the rug, but address it.
Marky mark
January 7, 2016 @ 5:42 am
I think his song writing baggage is far outweighed by his earlier recording “baggage”. Steeldrivers and Jompson Brothers should make a clear case that what he puts out under his own name will not likely be driven by commercial concerns. Those were bluegrass and southern rock/hard rock releases for gods sake, commercial suicide, not geared toward radio play in anyway. Let him earn a living with the radio ready stuff he writes and let’s others record if it frees him up to release his labors of love under his own name. Besides, as I have said repeatedly, when he records those songs himself with his acoustic guitar, they sound pretty great. The problem with those songs are the artists recording them.

The point I was making is that Stapleton has in the past done some things that might upset traditional fans. A lot of people, myself included, have been waiting for an outsider with no baggage to stroll in, and through nothing but sheer talent and great writing kick Cole Swindell out of Country Music so fast his bald head catches on fire. Stapleton is an insider, with a writing history that includes some Bro material; to a lot of traditional fans, that invalidates him as a Country Music Savior.

I’m not disagreeing with you. Exactly the opposite. Chris had BILLS to pay, and a responsibility to his family. I choose which of the songs he’s written to listen to. All the people saying that Chris Stapleton is awful because of some bad songs should also not listen to Jamey Johnson, because he wrote that awful badonkadonk song, and also shouldn’t listen to Hank Jr. because he did those stupid rowdy friends and football nonsense.
I don’t think we’re ever going to see another outsider do things the mainstream way. With all the new technology, mainstream music has become so insulated that anybody inside the system has to be a puppet. With all the new ways to discover music, the outsiders can sidestep mainstream music completely and retain complete creative control, and have the same levels of success as some of the B-Tier mainstream stars (like Brett Elderidge)

There are a few songs of Morgane’s on MySpace under Morgane Hayes https://myspace.com/countrykicksass/music/songs. I love this blog. Read it daily. But I am so tired of people trashing Chris Stapleton because he penned a few songs they didn’t care for.
His vocals are amazing, he can harmonize with anybody, the songs he wrote on his album run the gamut of emotion and are musically disparate, (aside: while I really enjoy McMurtry’s lyrics, I find the music on his latest boring beyond words) and for God’s sake — the mainstream is embracing him! What the hell more can you ask for?
(Rant over. Best to Chris, Morgane and band on SNL).

“While I really enjoy McMurtry”™s lyrics, I find the music on his latest boring beyond words.”
I’ve been waiting for someone to say that. I thought I was the only one on Earth who wasn’t absolutely blown away by that record. It’s not that I can’t get into those slower records, but McMurtry’s album felt like such a drag. (and that comes from someone who loves albums like Southeastern and Daylight and Dark.)

January 5, 2016 @ 9:35 pm
“Southeastern” took a bit for me to love, but once it hooked me, I was an Isbell goner. My theory is that we each have our own way of hearing music. If instrumentation or strong vocals doesn’t grab me immediately, it is rare that I learn to love an album. “Southeastern” was one that took some time, but once I got it, I got it! However, seeing Isbell live completely sealed the deal.
I think Stapleton can reach the listeners who hear music more for the instrumentation than the lyrics. Kinda wonder if many expected Sturgill to be in this spot and are annoyed that it is Stapleton in his place. But, there is something to being reachable and being able to come across as the nice guy. (And they may both be the most amazing human beings, but on the face of it, Stapleton comes across as endearing and Simpson comes across as if he is giving everybody the bird).
Cool Lester Smooth

Honestly, I think the reason Southeastern hooks more than Complicated Game (or, frankly, SMTF) is that he goes for those high notes in songs like Cover Me Up and Flying Over Water.

The only thing I’m surprised about Stapleton’s rise is that it didn’t happen faster. Although I almost chalked it up and figured he was starting to go under the radar somewhat like Sturgill. But like fine wine, I suppose, it takes time to develop! Happy for him and the future of the industry. Stapleton is the closest thing to a savior as we’ve seen in a long time…(even though am still on team Sturgill)!

“Oh yeah he got on SNL on his own merit, this is not the exact same path every POP star takes” ” oh its real tough to get on SNL” next breath ” SNL blows anyways”.
So many contradictions and hypocrite, if he hadn’t ruined Tennessee whiskey and came out publicly on Justin Timberlake’s crotch, I would think we might have something here but if you can’t see the puppet strings your blind(possibly voluntarily Trigger). Chris couldn’t make it mainstream without help period no way his songs make it without Dave Cobb no way his look makes it no f#$&€¥^€ing way, most of us are ahead of the curb record companies caught onto that the constant tirade against bro country if you see what we were saying from their perspective it was pretty funny and cool and marked a trend. Twitter, Facebook, ect every time someone you know post about liking Jason aldean you would hit them with a snappy one liner. At my job, with my friends I introduce everyone I know to alternative country music, Drive by truckers, Jason isbell, shooter Jennings, hellbound glory, john Carter cash, ect… Then I belittle them no joking I destroy the bro country they listen to and by extension their “coolness” they thought they were participating in the country trend when the trend fell away from country month after it started. Real country ain’t dirt roads I can’t afford to jack up my truck hell I can’t afford a door with matching paint, four wheelers are toys for rich kids playing country I have to work for a living.
You can’t blame Chris for selling out but don’t try to say he was ever anything but a sell out an artist would care about quality of content dignity and other things like that. A song writer who wanted to be afforded the luxury to not have to get a real job so he sells his songs to “dirt” bags, yeah that’s the trademark of true and living authentic real McCoy douchbag. He came out already sold out out. Don’t defend him let his chapped lips and sore ass defend themselves. You’ll be saying the same thing in a year although hell still seem authentic on his next album you’ll be hankering for something else.

It seems like your album is proof we”™re moving on from bro-country.” Stapleton replied “Well, country music has always had tractors, beer and beaches. Hank Jr. and Buck Owens sang about that stuff. I get tired of people trying to dog out the radio for not playing this or that. There are lots of people who like what they play ”“ otherwise, they wouldn”™t play it.” Oh, and not a big deal but I thought you would also appreciate that the actual idiomatic expression is “behind the curve” not the curb. The idea being a curve on a line graph setting a standard that one cannot maintain. FYI

Well, I hope his exposure actually leads a new era for country music – I just cannot understand bro-country and the mainstream bull.
Although I think Stapleton’s explosion is linked to some agenda (Justin Timberlake’s country album and he’s behind a major label), his talent is keeping him on top. I really think he’s going to win Album of the Year and it will be great since Taylor Swift has been giving her all in a shameless campaign to win it – saying she CRIED when lost to Daft Punk and the moment was a wake up call to 1989 (please.) It seems music doesn’t matter anymore.

10-4, post was a little exaggerated partly satirical. If I have to be 100% serious I know he is talented, I doubt he is authentic, and I hope it’s all true. But really I see the industry definitely making a move toward alternative country, and once they exploit and poison that then where will we be able to turn. Well, this is obviously great news. Stapleton is simply unstoppable at this point, and it doesn’t hurt that he seems to have some fans in high places. (Increasingly so.) It’s so gratifying to see someone with genuine talent acknowledged to this extent.
I’m also pleased to see that Robby Turner and Morgane Stapleton will be in tow for this performance. While Chris’s recent performance on Fallon was absolutely, truly impressive, I’m naturally partial to his steel guitar-drenched, outlaw country-influenced material. Personally, I think the song “Fire Away” would be a great choice for SNL.
Regarding some of the more contentious comments here, I say, give it a rest. I think there’s a time and place to discuss the pros and cons of Chris Stapleton and whatever his artistic baggage might be, but it’s irritating that every news item about him has to descend into a discussion on that subject. As I recall, the last time a country music artist performed on Saturday Night Live, it was our our good buddy Blake Shelton, who proceeded to sing “Boys ‘Round Here,” which is easily one of the dumbest songs in the history of the universe. Surely even Stapleton’s harshest critics would concede that whatever he’s going to do, it will be a vast improvement over that.
Personally, I’ve been hoping for a while now to see Sturgill Simpson on SNL, which will hopefully still happen sometime. Who knows, maybe Chris Stapleton’s appearance will even provide opportunities for other quality country artists to occupy that stage in the future. Unfortunately, a lot of people simply have no concept of high-quality modern country music, and some don’t have a clue what good country music sounds like at all. But hearing one good artist can people’s minds. Possibly even including television producers.
