CMT’s “Sun Records” Will Not Be Renewed for Second Season
A show that gave a fresh shot in the arm to the legacy of Sun Records and artists like Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis will not be renewed for a second season. CMT’s series Sun Records has been canceled after an eight episode run behind the network’s now signature series, Nashville. Starring Chad Michael Murray, Billy Gardell, Drake Milligan, Kevin Fonteyne, Christian Lees, Jonah Lees, with cameos from folks like Pokey LaFarge playing Hank Snow, the series was set in Memphis during the birth of rock and roll at the iconic studio landmark the show was named for.
According to CMT’s head of development, Jayson Dinsmore, fans should be happy they got as many episodes as they did, while also saying the series was a success in its short run, and leaving open the possibility of a return. Sun Records averaged a 0.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and 585,000 viewers per episode. Though these would be low numbers for a network television show, they fall into the average viewership for a CMT series.
“Originally we had planned for it to be a three-night event, and we morphed the development into a limited-run series,” says Jayson Dinsmore. “It always was to be a limited-run series. It did extremely well but there are no current plans for additional episodes. We may revisit. You never know, because it did quite well.”
The Sun Records series, and Nashville‘s move from ABC were part of a change in strategy from CMT to distance from the controversial reality series Party Down South, and instead focus on television that catered more to their conventional demographics as “Country Music Television.” Though Sun Records was never a ratings king, it found a lot of positive reception with old school country and rock fans. Jerry Lee Lewis and other living members of the original Sun Records scene praised the show.
Coming back to CMT are the Billy Ray Cyrus-led show Still The King, the unscripted I Love Kellie Pickler, among other shows.

I can’t believe it. This show was great. It gave a totally different perspective on the metamorphosis of blues and country into rock ‘n roll. What a great idea of showing the younger lives of music legends in parallel. I don’t know who CMT’s major company is, but what a mistake. I remember when CBS cancelled Moonlight in 2007 only to have Vampires become the “rage” the following year. Hope CMT is not making the same mistake.

OMG, really??? I can’t believe it. Just about the time we all find something we love then you take it off the air. So sad because it was so nice to see country television giving us what we really wanted to see. So, so, sad. Please bring it back. We were so looking forward to it again!

why do they keep taking all of the good shows on TV off? So they have room for trash like reality shows come on now. I’m going to just get everything screamed and go completely movies I’m just going to stop watching TV all together because every time there’s a show that I like you people take it off the air!

I’m disappointed Sun Records isn’t coming back. My husband and I liked this show. It’s always like this, they keep the crappie reality shows and get rid of the good ones. I am glad that you picked up Nashville. Hopefully that’s coming back, but would live to see second season of Sun records also.

Wow that really sucks,as I was really enjoying this show. Hell I even told my 84 yr old Father about it and he started watching it and likedd it (especially the Hank Snow stuff) CMT gets a good show about music history,ax it and keeps that awful “Nashville” shit going, which I’m pretty sure is the lamest show on tv right now.

It was definitely a guilty pleasure for me, and it gave my hometown guy Pokey LaFarge a nice boost. The writing and acting left something to be desired but they were so much better than Nashville.

Unapologetic fan of Nashville, the ABC kind, still like it after its move to CMT, but it has taken a definite slip in quality. Really looked forward to this show when they previewed the crap out of it ahead of its premiere, and love the concept and the idea of a show focusing on this time in music history…all that said, Sun Records bored the hell out of me within one episode, and if any of the other seven followed suit, I see why it will not be renewed. I see others saying it lacked some in acting and writing…well, that’s basically all that comprises a show, so I can see it not being renewed…It was a great idea, but an epic fail in execution.

Although some of the facts may have been changed a little, we were really enjoying this series and looking forward to watching the rest of the Sun Record’s line-up join. I really hope they reconsider, this was an important time in the formation of Rock and Roll and needs to be passed on, if not in this format, then maybe another.

Sorry it’s not being renewed. I enjoyed it but would liked better if there was more music. My friends say the same things. It is a little boring when we all hoped that we were going to hear more of what made Sun Records great. I grew up when these things happened. When Rock n Roll first came out I remember the different opinions of family friends. My family loved country music and I watched the faces of my parents when Elvis first appeared on tv. It turned out that they loved it and they started buying his records and we listened to them all the time.

June 5, 2017 @ 5:59 pm
You have a point Don when you said it would be better if there was more music. Maybe the crew should go back to the drawing board to add the music to the episodes because after all, the music is the root of the series.

Was so looking forward to a second season. You barely scratched the surface and off it went. How about doing mini series of the Sun Record years and the beginning of rock ‘n roll. Thought the actors were good and loved every note of the music and seeing how it all began. Great show but needed a chance to get others interested.

This is terrible news, and terrible strategy on CMT’s part. Col. Tom Parker is one of the best characters on television right now. Cancelling now, just as the music is getting good, and the main performers are starting to arrive at Sun Records, just doesn’t make sense. The next 8 episodes would be the biggest and the best of the series!

We loved Sun Records. You should give it more seasons. You made a big mistake in putting it in a station that wasn’t a regular
Station of Comcast (Infinity). We couldn’t get
It on any station but had to watch it a couple of days later on TV shows – Comcast On Demand.
Comcast said if we paid $5 month more, they would activate the station. You should have put it on a major station so the general public could see it. You made a big mistake!!
Please bring Season 2 on a regular TV Station. It is one terrific show

I really love the Sun Records series as this is what gave birth to Rock and Roll in the first place and it makes not sense at all to pull it of the air after only one season as it got off to an excellent start with just its pilot episode with top 5-Star ratings! This show is based on a true story so it is a biography, therefore, the story cannot be completed in only one season. I was born and raised on Rock and Roll including Rockabilly, Soul, Rhythm and Blues including Country and I was so much looking forward to looking forward to the second including the following seasons that I was going to spend extra money to purchase devices to receive the best reception but now, those plans have been dashed. This is such a disappointment but not a surprise, so please, CMT, including any other channels who were broadcasting it, please think twice and reconsider your decision and pay attention to our pleas to save this show and to allow it to air for several more seasons after the first one so that the biography of this story can be completed. It also contributes to music education as well as many people from the younger generations can learn about the origins of the music they entertain themselves with today. Thank you very much.
Nancy
June 11, 2017 @ 9:53 am
Why take off a show in high demand and keep renewing garbage? The story is only half told and not only disrespects the talented singers and song writers it’s disrespectful to the history of Memphis and the impact not only in the music industry but history itself. Perhaps the writers are not intelligent enough to know all the history of Sun Records and Memphis…Hopefully a better network realizes the market value of this show and picks it up. CMT is beginning to suck…

I really loved Sun Records. My be odd for a 35 year old from Michigan but I grew up listening to old country. Huge fan of Johnny Cash and was really looking forward to seeing more of that story develop. Music history is always amazing to see. It was great to finally see CMT doing something about music for a change. And honestly, I would choose Sun Records over Nashville ANY DAY.

I loved the show…my son lived in Memphis at the time so we made a trip to sun records…we were able to stand on the same spot that Elvis and Johnny Cash stood when they first recorded and we got to hold one of the actual microphones all in the same recording studio…so every week I couldn’t wait for another episode…but then we were crushed when they cancelled…needless to say I took the CMT app off my phone.

Darn! I looked forward to the episodes every week. I am a big fan of Elvis. However, I am too young to know the history of rock and roll. By the time that I became old enough to enjoy Cash, Lewis and Elvis their careers had slowed down. It was interesting to learn about the onset of their music. Maybe a mini movie to wrap it up could be a possibility.

Will you be releasing the 8 episodes on DVD? If so, when? I really enjoyed the show. Could have done without Sam Philips screwing around on his wife, but, that’s the way it was. The guy who played Tom Parker was a real piece of work. Shame no body killed him before he screwed up Elvis’s life. I don’t normally watch CTV. Not a big fan of reruns. Oh well.

Just when the artists were about to get discovered and we would get more of their music (hopefully),they decide to take it off the air. I watched Nashville once (waiting for Sun Records to come on) and that was the only time. I liked the concept of Sun Records. I enjoyed “meeting” all the characters including Col. Parker and Sam Phillips and others behind the scenes of the artists lives. I was around when it all began, but this was a new perspective on the music we loved. Wish you would bring it back and invest some real creativity into a series. And change your demographics. People don’t love what they don’t remember. Your target audience is older and probably has more money than the 18 year old demographic you were targeting.

I don’t watch much tv. GENERAL Hospital, Supernatural, CMT and GAC music videos, and the evening news. That does it. Then along came Sun Records. I couldn’t wait for Thursday night to roll around. I was actually excited about this show. It kept me wanting to tune in. Loved all the characters and the people playing them. I think it is a shame that you cancelled it didn’t even give it a chance. Would have loved to see Jerry Lee Lewis get in more trouble or hear Cash sing Folsom Prison or to watch Elvis swing his hips ad he performs. I think you guys cut your nose off to spite your face. This was a great show that deserved a chance. CMT didn’t give it one. Sad news on the cancellation.

Bring back Sun Records or maybe another network will take it and develop it. There is so much content and years of stories to tell. The network is missing a huge opportunity by not continuing the stories through to present day, developing the artists, the writing, the historical places and characters. Years of stories just waiting to be told.

I loved this show. It’s so very disappointing to find tv shows that truly touch you and this one did foe me just as Nashville does. I’m really not a huge fan of country music, but I LOVED Sun Records. To hear the story of how those kids crossed paths and were one of the first to start Rock & Roll. Elvis & Johnny on the Guitar, and Jerry on the Piano, I question whether we have we heard anything like it since. The kid that played Jerry Lee was outstanding, and Chad Michael Murray deserved to be nominated for a Golden Globe. I think it was huge mistake to stop the show.

I am very disappointed, it was a very good show. Better than Billy cirus or any of the other shows on the network.

This was one of my favorite new series (and I never watch CMT but I am a rock and roll fan). So pissed that it is cancelled. How could this possibly lose? People obviously have no taste whatsoever.

Well I do believe this was the worst news ever! Yall messed up by quitting this show…now I am upset that I just spent all my time on one of the best shows ever only to have it not return. This portrayal of the King would go down in record books along with everything else in Elvis’ life and continue to bring in the bucks. You search the King you watch every tid bit you can find on him. Hes to this day, 40 yrs after death still pulling in millions and will continue to do so. Think about that and bring the show back please.

Unbelievable, I’m getting tired of these cable channels leaving us hanging. Sun Records was a well scripted show that showed the underbelly of the early days of rock and roll and the blues. It should be brought back or picked up by different network.

I hope someone else picks this show up, as it was one of my favorite shows. Very sad that crap is renewed on tv, while a truly great show like this is not. Very, very sad.

you took off “sun records” and kept “Billy ray Cyrus” what a shame ! I loved that show and always looked forward to Thursday Night for Nashville and Sun Records !!

I loved Sun Records, it inspired me to take a side trip to Memphis during my 50th birthday trip to Nashville. I took the Sun tour and because of the show, I could feel the history and got goose bumps in the studio.
Yesterday I saw Million Dollar Quartet at the Paramount in Aurora, IL and I felt like I was at their concert instead of a play. Again with the set of the studio, I felt like I was there as it was happening.
The show gave me much more insight into that world and I was anticipating learning more. I hope someone picks this series up. Please bring it back.
