Muddy Roots Festival in the Works
I’ve been saying for years that one of the the things the REAL country movement is lacking is a bona-fide music festival where the music can be promoted, and musicians, podcasters, media, and fans can network. Festivals like the Deep Blues and Pickathon have come close, but this year’s inagural Muddy Roots Festival in late May (28th-30th) in Cookeville, TN might hit the nail right on the head. With headliners Billy Joe Shaver and Wayne “The Train” Hancock and a slew of other cool bands, this could very well be that one festival, or become that one festival to light a match under the movement, similar to how Willie Nelson’s “Dripping Springs Reunion” which turned into his annual 4th of July picnics did back in the 70’s.
The Muddy Roots Festival is the brain child of Jason Galaz of Nashville. Galaz got started in the music industry screenprinting T-shirts for bands, and then moved into doing promotion. The weekend festival will include camping and food vendors on a full service festival grounds that include a large stage, sound tower, and shower facilities. People will be able to come and not have to leave the grounds all weekend. It is being held on the June Bug Boogie Ranch in Cookeville, the same place the June Bug Biker rallies happen twice a year. No exact price for this, but the plan is to keep admission under $50.
Following is a list of acts scheduled to perform at the Festival at the moment:
- Billy Joe Shaver
- Wayne “The Train” Hancock
- Kyle Turley (former football player)
- The Goddamn Gallows
- Cashman
- Dex Romweber
- Husky Burnette
- Cletus Got Shot
- Smokestack and the Foothill Fury
- The Calamity Cubes
- Lane Kristian and the Jakehead Mob
- Reverend Dead Eye
- Hillbilly Harlots
- Dave Smith and the Country Rebels
- Jason and the Punknecks

I have been attending Muddy Roots shows since Jason began to thrown them. There are often several amazing musicians in attendance as Muddy Roots continues to carve it’s own stake in the world of roots music. This is the highlight of Jason’s venture, but it is only the beginning, with more to surely come. Support independant music! Support Muddy Roots!

Awesome man, got a great lineup there so far.
I would like take one moment to say that Deep Blues Festival, in my opinion, HAS done all that this festival promises, just with a focus on the blues more than country. There’s a lot of crossover with the two I’ve noticed. Nothing wrong with that, and I’m glad as hell to see what seems to be another great festival pop up!

Never been to Deep Blues, but from everything I’ve seen and heard, they put on one hell of a festival. If Muddy Roots can become the Deep Roots of country music, then I think all would have to say this is a success.

YAY Muddy Roots!!!
Muddy Roots booked BOB WAYNE & .357 STRING BAND as backup, then .357 on their own @ Matty’s Alley for last night in East Nashville…CASHMAN sang the blues for opening act….excellent music, fun time and good people the entire evening.
We met Jason aka Muddy Roots (pics coming on myspace)and Wayne circulated the REINSTATE HANK petition. Some of the Hank 3 folks were also out for an evening of good music. They include Zach Shedd & his gal Rachel, Davey Mac & Andy Gibson. Mr. Bandana was there from North Carolina with Ronnie Hymes & his gal and another couple. Ronnie Hymes has some good songs out there too, be looking for his name to start popping up. Billie Mae & Wild Bill, fellow Kentuckians, were still in Trashville from the Hank III show @ Layla’s the night before and they showed up. Wild Bill is a fan of BOB WAYNE and Billie a fan of .357.
A few months back we got to meet BOB WAYNE backstage when HANK III played @ The Country Music Hall of Fame. I’ve been listening to his songs for a few years now and I was absolutely thrilled to be there. Obviously, because we made 2 trips to Trashville, 2 nights in a row, and then I spent all of Wayne’s money on merch…lol.
BOB WAYNE, with or without The Outlaw Carnies, is almost right up there around the HANK III level for me. That dude is talented. We got there early and got to talk to him quite a bit. Let me also say Matty’s Alley is an excellent venue. It’s across the street from where we saw Lucky Tubb @ The Foo Bar a month or two ago.
On the way to Trashville Wayne bought me a new camera/video recorder. Mr. Bandana and I will be putting up some YouTubes and pics on myspace for circulation. Keep in mind I didn’t get to practice prior to using.

We are excited to announce the Pre-sale Early Bird tickets are available now at http://www.muddyrootsmusic.com.
I also would like to thank some of pioneers within these genres such as the Deep Blues Festival, Hillgrass Bluebilly, Savingcountrymusic.com, all the touring musicians, and a good hand full of others for inspiring us to take up the fight in Tennessee to take back our music. We promote the blended sounds of the underground movements and hope to bring together multiple “scenes” to celebrate our eclectic way of life.
